It impresses me that you can see in this video the desire of everyone to continue enjoying life, even after they saw so much death, destruction, cruelty, misery, and error. This was the end of a cataclysmic event in human history. The human spirit still comes through. More smiles on these people than you would see walking around today.

in fairness, not all saw death, cruelty, misery and "error". some probably saw those, others saw bombing destruction, the soldiers saw deaths. today, we see the death, destruction, misery and cruelty all uploaded, compressed and summarized to us all at once in TV, videos, the internet and history books -- so today, we "see it all" and "know it all". but they, those in the camera, didn't "see or know it all" at the time. they were just beginning to find out. so, of course, they were all smiling. but i agree life and the human spirit is an unstoppable force.

It's interesting to note the physical differences in the Soviet soldiers. There is quite a number of ethnicities represented. For so long I imaged the Soviets to all be physically similar, never taking the time to think how vast the USSR was and all the ethnicities encompassed within it.

@@Steelhorsecowboy I am Ex-soviet. I am Asian. There was no racism in the USSR like in the USA for example . We had newspapers, TV channel, schools, cinema studio on our native language. We had equal rights. At institutes and universities we had 2 departements of the same faculty for example. One was for Russian speaking and the second was for native speaking students. The programme was the same. Of course for making a good carreer you should learn Russian. It was rather easy as there were a lot of Russians around you. By the way my grandpa, Kazakh by nationality, was at ww2. And Granny of my husband was there too. She was is Soviet Korean. She was badly wounded there , no one eye.
Always refreshing to see actual footage! Notice how Soviet soldier group is different to other allies? Tells you a lot about demographic impact of war on Soviet Union. There is lot of women, men of all ages and different ethnics. For Soviets it was all out war, and it decimated young population. Other allied soldiers are mostly represented by young men of drafting age.
Well, to be fair the US and Britain DID have female soldiers, they just didn't serve in combat. As a matter of fact, they both made their female forces permanent by 1949, with America even giving theirs equal pay.

Yes, everyone was young once, nowadays when I look at old people I consider them in their entirety... child, youth, young adult, doing all the same things we've done and will do. We are all travellers on that same journey and that big wheel keeps on spinning. But I think I'd prefer it if it started bad and got progressively better rather than the other way round.

The quality of this is mind boggling , by far the best footage ive ever seen from WW2 . really shows the human element to the point that you almost feel as if you are there in person watching it. really amazes me how at ease everyone is considering they were killing each other ony a few weeks / months before . Also incredible how modern Germany was at the time, road and rail almost looks like the 80s Thank you so much for this .

this recruits last calls and started their servuce near 1945. 30% of tank crews in 1945 were women due to the exhaustion of the USSR mobilization potential. But I will not argue that they are worthy of respect.

It’s amazing how ethnically diverse the Red Army was. I know the German army and SS were also super diverse but a lot of the nationalities were segregated and organised into separate units. However in the Red Army you constantly see Caucasian males and females walking along side Asians. Very intriguing
How are you surprised by this? The Soviet Union had a wide variety of ethnicities within its borders so naturally that reflected back in the army. And the Soviet Union suffered massive casualties during the war so they were very reliant on their Siberian minorities to refill their ranks and there weren't enough Russians and Slavic peoples to do that. Germany and other European countries on the other hand were almost entirely of caucasian stock. Also the Germany army wasn't super diverse at all it was the national army of Germany so you would have seen only Germans. But yes the SS did have foreign units but most of them came from other European countries.
@@hazzmati because when people think of the Soviet Union they just think “oh that was just Russia when it was communist” but it was much bigger than Russia and had like 13 republics and satellite states etc. the SS was probably more diverse though. German, Belgian, Flemish, Dutch, Scandinavian, Mediterranean, Baltic, Slavic, Yugoslavic, Spanish, French, Indian, American and even a few hundred British fought in the SS.

Read the documents with discussions between Stalin and Hitler - scholars have now found Stalin to have negotiated very intelligently and responsibly with enormous efforts to stop an invasion without the use of force on either side but Germany just went in and started slaughtering most of the towns and villages they passed.

A lot of them headed to the western corridor away from the Soviet’s. In 1961 the East Germans and Soviet’s had enough and built the wall. When the German commanders are telling their own people to run towards the Americans and British, you can imagine just how bad being in Soviet occupation was going to be. If Eisenhower had not held the reigns on Patton, Czechia, would have never fallen to the Russians and hell he may have been in Berlin a month before the Russians. Of all the field commanders the Germans feared him the most.

Your "peace" has been very "nicely" introduced in Poland, Hungary and Czechoslovakia. Your soldiers carried out mass robberies and rapes (in 1944/45). For many ordinary people, even the cruel German occupiers didn't prove to be as dangerous as the first units of the "liberating" Red Army.

Delicious is the fact that the americans, the french and the british arrived in Berlin only after two mounth since the Soviet Army conquered Berlin and pacificated it. The Russian Red Army conqured Berlin at the finish of April-beginning of May 1945, and the Americans arrived only in 4th of July in Berlin. As usualy they declared themselves ...... victorious and with full rights, when in fact they were allowed to enter from Soviet Stalin.

Yes. However, the original purpose was to be able to move troops and equipment quickly as part of preparations to meet the new decision to be able to fight a two front war in the future. Before the interstate system many roads and even highways were not paved or connected at regular intervals.

If you had then you would know most autobahns have speed limits and those very few that do are mostly in Bavaria with only stretches that have no speed limits. Those stretches are no longer than 50 km at longest or more than 20-22 miles long.

In Germany, a dozen cities were defeated .In the USSR 70,000 cities and towns were in ruins and by 1956 everything was restored , and in 1953 the card system was canceled (one of the prvyh among the warring countries). The Soviet Union also helped to recover other countries such as Poland , Czechoslovakia , East Germany.

The USSR had influence on the countries of Eastern Europe, just as the United States had influence on the countries of Western Europe (the United States still influences the politics of European countries). And likewise, defenders usually don’t just barricade the streets, they ambush you from the houses as well. You can see it in Ukraine as well. Furthermore, basic infrastructure is the first thing you replace in order to facilitate the movement of your own equipment. Which is why the last units of the Wehrmacht who officially surrendered were the engineers as they were kept in service. Mark Felton made a video on the latter ones.
Not only does the colour and clarity bring these events to life. But the music also adds another dimension to these videos…it makes these images even more intriguing and atmospheric

But I remember Germany in the 70's and early 80's (I was a soldier in Berlin, had been working in Baden-Wurtenberg as an intern) where a majority of older people (born 1910-1930) still did not understand why Germany had lost Koenigsberg, Ost Preussen, Schlesien, Pomern, usw. They would even overwhelmingly find it unfair.

Yea, i find it highly symbolic that Hitler wanted Germany to become this world's greatest empire but in return of his horrible intentions behind it the very core of Germany actually ended up in complete ruins as a result ( rebuildable thankfully ) but totally in ruins none the less. This is just weird. The buildings are war-torn, there's piles of rubble. The people cleaning them are clean, well-groomed, physically healthy and at least appear generally happy, unlike people who've just spent years in a war. The roads, country side and most everything except for the buildings are in good shape. And everyone is moving at a very leisurely pace. Like, no one's moving slowly as if depressed, nor hurriedly like they have places they need to be. It's like everyone is on a vacation. The soldiers at the beginning are in very weird groups, too. Like, different colors of uniforms and women sporadically mixed in the middle (very out of place for the 40s). Like, what?? Is there some sort of mass psychological effect of a post-war situation that causes things to be like this??

It's interesting to note the physical differences in the Soviet soldiers. There is quite a number of ethnicities represented. For so long I imaged the Soviets to all be physically similar, never taking the time to think how vast the USSR was and all the ethnicities encompassed within it.

@@Steelhorsecowboy I am Ex-soviet. I am Asian. There was no racism in the USSR like in the USA for example . We had newspapers, TV channel, schools, cinema studio on our native language. We had equal rights. At institutes and universities we had 2 departements of the same faculty for example. One was for Russian speaking and the second was for native speaking students. The programme was the same. Of course for making a good carreer you should learn Russian. It was rather easy as there were a lot of Russians around you.
By the way my grandpa, Kazakh by nationality, was at ww2. And Granny of my husband was there too. She was is Soviet Korean. She was badly wounded there , no one eye.

Always refreshing to see actual footage! Notice how Soviet soldier group is different to other allies? Tells you a lot about demographic impact of war on Soviet Union. There is lot of women, men of all ages and different ethnics. For Soviets it was all out war, and it decimated young population. Other allied soldiers are mostly represented by young men of drafting age.

Yes, everyone was young once, nowadays when I look at old people I consider them in their entirety... child, youth, young adult, doing all the same things we've done and will do. The quality of this is mind boggling , by far the best footage ive ever seen from WW2 . really shows the human element to the point that you almost feel as if you are there in person watching it. really amazes me how at ease everyone is considering they were killing each other ony a few weeks / months before . Also incredible how modern Germany was at the time, road and rail almost looks like the 80s Thank you so much for this .

It’s amazing how ethnically diverse the Red Army was. I know the German army and SS were also super diverse but a lot of the nationalities were segregated and organised into separate units. However in the Red Army you constantly see Caucasian males and females walking along side Asians. Very intriguing
How are you surprised by this? The Soviet Union had a wide variety of ethnicities within its borders so naturally that reflected back in the army. And the Soviet Union suffered massive casualties during the war so they were very reliant on their Siberian minorities to refill their ranks and there weren't enough Russians and Slavic peoples to do that.
Germany and other European countries on the other hand were almost entirely of caucasian stock. Also the Germany army wasn't super diverse at all it was the national army of Germany so you would have seen only Germans. But yes the SS did have foreign units but most of them came from other European countries.
@@hazzmati because when people think of the Soviet Union they just think “oh that was just Russia when it was communist” but it was much bigger than Russia and had like 13 republics and satellite states etc. the SS was probably more diverse though. German, Belgian, Flemish, Dutch, Scandinavian, Mediterranean, Baltic, Slavic, Yugoslavic, Spanish, French, Indian, American and even a few hundred British fought in the SS.

If Eisenhower had not held the reigns on Patton, Czechia, would have never fallen to the Russians and hell he may have been in Berlin a month before the Russians. Of all the field commanders the Germans feared him the most.

The Russian Red Army conqured Berlin at the finish of April-beginning of May 1945, and the Americans arrived only in 4th of July in Berlin. I like how soldiers and civilians smiled nicely for the camera. I imagined more destruction in Berlin in the summer of 1945, yet the roads looked like new.

And likewise, defenders usually don’t just barricade the streets, they ambush you from the houses as well. You can see it in Ukraine as well.
Furthermore, basic infrastructure is the first thing you replace in order to facilitate the movement of your own equipment. Which is why the last units of the Wehrmacht who officially surrendered were the engineers as they were kept in service. Mark Felton made a video on the latter ones.

But I remember Germany in the 70's and early 80's (I was a soldier in Berlin, had been working in Baden-Wurtenberg as an intern) where a majority of older people (born 1910-1930) still did not understand why Germany had lost Koenigsberg, Ost Preussen, Schlesien, Pomern, usw. They would even overwhelmingly find it unfair.

This is just weird. The buildings are war-torn, there's piles of rubble. The people cleaning them are clean, well-groomed, physically healthy and at least appear generally happy, unlike people who've just spent years in a war. The roads, country side and most everything except for the buildings are in good shape. And everyone is moving at a very leisurely pace. Like, no one's moving slowly as if depressed, nor hurriedly like they have places they need to be. It's like everyone is on a vacation. The soldiers at the beginning are in very weird groups, too. Like, different colors of uniforms and women sporadically mixed in the middle (very out of place for the 40s). Like, what?? Is there some sort of mass psychological effect of a post-war situation that causes things to be like this??
