I am convinced that they became official offscreen either before or after Nick’s coronation to become a cop. Just the way they look at each other when she presents him his badge says it all.
The writers of Zootopia said that they purposely left the ending open ended, meaning that we’re allowed to see it as romantic or platonic, they also said that in the sequel they’ll clarify whether Nick and Judy’s relationship is platonic or romantic. I’m fine with either, but they do have a lot of chemistry that should be utilized. I really hope they become romantic, but if they don’t, I’ll still love them either way and be happy either way

Like why do it if you're going to undo it later anyway? But if they don't go down this path, it just takes away from the movie.

Romantic love is not special at all, and I think that the romantic type of love isn't real. More than half of romantic couples either break up with each other or divorce each other. Romantic relationships are objectively very prone to failure. And most couples who are still together are usually not happy being together. Also, there are a lot of toxic romantic relationships. Studies prove single, childless, women are the HAPPIEST demographic. Women are the happiest when single and focused on themselves.

It's a similar situation with Marlin and Dory from Finding Nemo.
