    Stephen Fry is highly intelligent, well read, knowledgeable open-minded, humble and non judgmental. For me, his greatest gift is his ability to come up with and use the perfect word here and there and everywhere to say exactly what he means to say without ambiguity. I could listen to him for hours. I respect and admire him immensely. You should react to the debate he did with Christopher Hitchens about whether the Catholic Church is a force for good.

      Stephen was educated in the Classics. He has a wide vocabulary and a strong command of the language. There was a time when his eloquence wouldn’t have been considered quite so remarkable. The drop in standards of grammar and vocabulary are largely to blame, but no one is allowed to say that anymore. Apparently it’s all good as long as the person you are talking to understands what you’re saying.
      And yet, at the end of it all, we all know that people like Stephen are able to communicate more accurately and effectively, and it’s not simple pedantry or self-aggrandisement.

    Universities used to be the place where "free thinkers" could study, discuss and think outside the box.
    Oxford and Cambridge universities didn't become the seat of great thinkers and inventors by telling people what to think and what to discuss, they became that way by NOT limiting what to think or discuss.
    Critical thinking is how society is allowed to move forward.
    Restricted thinking is how society moves backwards.

    Stephen Fry has an amazing life story from skipping school...borrowing a family friends coat to sleep rough which had a credit card in the pocket. Getting arrested for theft of said credit card and spending 3 months in a young offenders institute to getting good grades on his school exams on release and passing the entrance exam for Cambridge to study on a scholarship. Getting an honours degree and meeting his fellow comedy actors during this time like Rowan Atkinson (Mr Bean to many) and Hugh Laurie (of House fame). Both of which he starred alongside in successful tv programs.
    He's also talked openly about growing up gay in the 60s and 70s when unfortunately you could still be jailed in the UK if caught liaising with a person of the same sex.

In addition to his Cambridge MA, he holds honorary doctorates from five other universities and has authored about 20 books and scripted the comedy series A Bit of Fry and Laurie. On some things I'm on the left, on some things I'm on the right, on most things I'm somewhere mostly in the middle. In Stephen Frys desired world I'd be a person, in PC culture I'm a traitor, a fool and a self-hater. But they don't bring me arguments, they try to force compliance. If you're taken hostage you may comply but what does it do to the heart? You're not swaying me to your side. Like those climate activists spraypanting stonehenge? I care about the environment, but by trying to be that forceful, my first thought is 'lets go dump some oil in a lake or something'. Let people be people, we're all multifaceted. If there's an extreme action there will be an extreme reaction. PC is how you get people that agree 80% with you to go 'F all you have to say'.

    • @bulletsandbracelets4140
      @bulletsandbracelets4140 3 дні тому +2

      It feels like the problem is people just don't have enough respect for each other's individual experiences. I don't give PC any weight because when I'm speaking to someone, the only thing that matters is how they individually respond to me. The internet removes that connection, and that's why this is almost entirely an internet problem.
      I'm left on most things because of the life I've lived. My mother is disabled and unable to work and relies on government housing and social security to have a roof over her head and food. Someone without that experience might look at "welfare" as something to be taken advantage of, something that promotes laziness. I see it as a necessity that does far more good than harm, and the entire reason I pay taxes - to help those who need it and who I cannot personally give everything to myself.
      No one should be called a traitor, but I do think there's too little understanding on both sides of this. Different people have different experiences, and some are hurt immensely by decisions that do not at all impact others. So those people are, out of necessity, going to get more upset than others. I feel this any time cutting social security comes up. For some, this means a later retirement. For me, this means my mother loses everything.
      We have to stop treating discussions we see online as if they are indicative of the way people act in the real world, most of all. Social media boosts the worst "PC" takes because those are the things that generate discourse. In reality, all "political correctness" is, in an individual conversation, is asking that a person listen to you and respect that your experiences and perspectives might be different. It's courtesy. No one can force it, but we can all expect it from people if they want us to respect them in return.

You can argue that nothing gets done then but actually the end result seem to be that in most cases no political party has enough votes alone to make legislations. • @hughtube5154
      @hughtube5154 5 днів тому +1

      Yes. As Stephen Fry recounts it here, Harvey used to be the head of Miramax studios, which launched the directing careers of Quentin Tarantino and Kevin Smith, amongst others. Weinstein was seen as the most powerful man in Hollywood because of his track record of producing low budget films that did really well at the box office and / or scooped up at awards ceremonies. (Shakespeare In Love being the prime example; he invented the bombardment of the press association in order to get his films Oscar nominated. Good Will Hunting being another ecample.) He leveraged that power to force himself on wannabe actresses, using quid pro quo tactics where sexual favours were returned with movie parts. In the case of some, he would force himself on the unwilling, behaviour which came back to haunt him as he's been jailed for sexual assault. The #Metoo movement started so actors could tell of their exploitation at his, and other predators', hands.

I know this wasn't the intention of the uploader, but it's basically what you do when you only record the argumentative highlights of one part of a four-way debate.
    For that reason alone, you should watch the entire debate. Unfortunately, it turns, as most public debates do, into a bit of an unfocused mess, and Stephen himself is guilty of not letting people finish and making jokes on their behalf, despite what he promised in his self-introduction (to listen). But hey, maybe you'll learn something else from watching the debate. It's been too long since I watched it to tell what I learned.

    If you don't know Stephen too well, you won't know that for over 40 years his best friend has been Dr House, Hugh Laurie. Another very close friend is Oscar winner Emma Thompson. They were all at Cambridge together. Here's a short clip of Stephen and Hugh ending their 1980s BBC comedy show 'A Bit of Fry and Laurie' as they did each week - with Stephen making them both a cocktail.

    The Russell quote about indecision sounds like an inversion of William Yeats poem The Second Coming specifically:
    Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
    Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
    The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
    The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
    The best lack all conviction, while the worst
    Are full of passionate intensity.
    Having an idea vs having belief seems the core of what Fry and Yeats are getting at. Ideas are fine but when they turn into ideologies-beliefs from which no deviation can be tolerated the ideas are no better than tyrannies of the mind.

    I am really happy to see you reacting to Stephen Fry. He is always worth listening to.
    He also appeared on other similar debates with people like Christopher Hitchins.
    It is funny, how these debates are incredibly popular in the Anglo-American world, especially at respected colleges / universities but much less elsewhere. Also, often about topics like religion, or even evolution (as if this is seriously "controversial"), and if you want to hear another eloquent voice with a deep sense of decency, you should react to similar discussions with Richard Dawkins (topic are often atheism and science vs. religion).
    Another British voice which you might enjoy is the one of John Cleese (from the legendary Monty Python group), who always spoke his mind in a very eloquent manner, not shy of talking about topics like religion, politics and the absurdity of life.
    There are probably many more who are really worth watching for their way to express themselves alone ...
    Another word about the topic political correctness and how absurd it is ... I recently saw a black American reactor (or should I have said PoC? sorry can't resist) who said about Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn, that it is "a book for children which has a lot of bad language, specifically the N-word". And I was deeply shocked, how this is the only content you could remember from it. It was re-released in 2011 with all N-words replaced by "slave". Which is IMHO ridiculous. I mean, it is about the friendship of a poor white kid with a runaway slave, and they want to escape an inhumane situation with a houseboat to flee to Canada, seemingly not knowing the Mississippi flows south due to lack of education, and in the end Huck flees to become a Native American, because he likes freedom much more than the system that wants to "educate" him, after all he has experienced. Removing a "bad word" in this highly debated case just softens the history. And if this is all you remember from this deeply anti-racist, freedom-loving book, that Hemingway called "the beginning of all new American literature", is devastating.
    It is not about if you are offended by a word, it is about the actual content, and if you can only remember the offense you felt by reading a book, and not it's actual message, you have to re-learn reading books in the first place.
    Really enjoyed your reaction, Heidi, and hope to see much more content like this on your channel. And yes - eloquent language is powerful. And it makes perfectly sense to listen to people who are masters in this field.

    I really like the very eloquent and thought provoking art of Stephen Fry here, and every time I can bear witness of his wit.
    Political correctness in it's current use like the cancelation of speech and thought, the extreme banning of all that are not strongly enough one one side of the isle of the leading force, is so blatantly reminiscent of the works of Orwell, especially 1984 with INSOC standing in for the political thinkers and tinkers of now, that it is really hard to not draw the parallels. The fear of the right makes the left become more and more what they despise the most by banning what they think is incorrect and shall not be spoken of, cause it corrupts the mind and state of the person. We need to return to a culture of debate and reasoning with one another. Acknowledgement that from different perspectives, social standpoints and beliefs, a matter can have several points of view and that they may have value for discussion and not outright banning and dismissing.
    We need to have open forums and platforms that allow for this discussions to happen again. But on television, news, even online, thoughts and beliefs get canceled and filtered out and those without a platform to express and debate decent more and more into subgroups of their own, echoing their same beliefs against each other, where they feel free and understood, worsening the rift in society even more.

It allows for no options of ideological "greyscale" - mostly/partially with you etc. I'm mostly on the Left politically but cringe when I hear some of the more......enthusiastic proponents of radical Leftism (SJW Warriors, 101 Pronoun advocates etc.) I think the equivalent on the Right are the MAGA clowns - the problem being these radical Left/Right people are making all of the noise in the media & drowning out us who agree with Stephen Fry!

    I love this man. I followed him since 1989 I guess, when he had a comedy show together with Hugh Laurie. If his name doesn’t ring a bell, you probably know him as the lead character Dr. Gregory House from the series ‘House M.D.’, or just ‘House’. The comedy show was called ‘A Bit of Fry and Laurie’. It was a show unlike anything else I’ve ever watched and thought it was hilarious, even though it was quite hard to follow for the young Dutch boy that I was. I think it’s worth watching some of their sketches, which were partially improvised, here on UA-cam.
    Even though there certainly are many differences between the two, he frequently reminds me of Christopher Hitchens. Both very outspoken and both masters with words. They both formed a team in a long debate about the statement “The Catholic Church is a Force for Good in the World”. You’ll be able to find this two hour debate by searching for that statement. Maybe you may need to add the names ‘Hitchens’ and ‘Fry’, but I don’t think it’s a hard search. In all fairness, I thought their opponents made it a little too easy, because the native language of those two is NOT English. Then again, it’s not the debate by itself that I think is impressive. It’s the opening statements and the rebuttals of Hitchens and Fry that are so powerful that it’s almost impossible to disagree (in my opinion).
    I’m not sure if this debate, or even just the powerful opening statements, is something you would like to comment on on your channel, because…. well, Americans and religion…, but I’m pretty sure you would be interested in watching this debate.
    Sorry, this is just a recommendation for you from someone who feels really strongly about this, especially because it’s not so much about personal beliefs, but about the position of the Catholic Church and what’s wrong with it according to Hitchens and Fry. And I learned many things that I had no idea about before I saw that video. I understand that this may seem like I want to push you into certain directions. I honestly don’t. But I saw how much you admired Stephen Fry and his mindset, just like I do. And I thought this would interest you because of your own points of view that were in line with the wordings of Stephen Fry.
    I loved watching this video. Thanks! 🧡🧡🧡

    I have watched the full debate and Stephen Fry and Jordan Petersen just completely outwitted and and outsmarted the other 2, with reason, intellect and just common sense and decency. As a passionate centrist people need to listen more rather than lecture yell at more. I dont agree with all of Jordans politics, or Stephen's, I have my own mind and make my own decisions, but I very much appreciate and respect their intellect and the fact that the have seriously considered all points of view before coming to their own opinion, and as Stephen said, people need to accept the possibility they are wrong. Political correctness is the mother of all negative unintended consequences.

    Stephen is a gem. So unbelievably good at putting words on a complex topic like this.
    And I agree with him, sometimes it works better to talk straight than trying to navigate a minefield of taboos and forbidden words.
    Things can of course be phrased in more polite and elegant manners, but sometimes it's the provocative language that's necessary to get people to understand.
    There's a reason why you just yell 'timber!' when a tree is about to fall, rather than 'this tree is about to fall, I'd highly suggest you look around and get out of the way!'
    I also haven't forbidden my kids from cursing or foul language, even when they were very little... never said it was a forbidden word or angry about it. I've just told them that it doesn't sound nice and that they could probably find nicer ways to express the same.
