Tyler DeWitt: Hey science teachers -- make it fun
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 лют 2013
- High school science teacher Tyler DeWitt was ecstatic about a lesson plan on bacteria (how cool!) -- and devastated when his students hated it. The problem was the textbook: it was impossible to understand. He delivers a rousing call for science teachers to ditch the jargon and extreme precision, and instead make science sing through stories and demonstrations. (Filmed at TEDxBeaconStreet.)

this guy is the only reason I am passing college chemistry.
Only reason why I'm passing AP Chemistry
Same. Almost everyone in my program watches him
I once had a math teacher who was pretty terrible.
He had this very monotonous voice and never interacted with the students at all, and hardly showed any emotions whatsoever.
He didn't even look annoyed or strict, he just had this blank face like he was talking to himself or something, sort of like a "hm, yes this is what it's like, and then there is this topic, etc" - not in those exact words of course, but that's what his lectures felt like.
Thankfully I also have a few teachers who are amazing - they speak very clearly, they show tons of enthusiasm, and they actually care about the students and want them to succeed.
If a lecturer visits his students right at the beginning of an examination, then smiles kindly and says "good luck" to the students, then you know that he is a good teacher.
i found this guy way to late...
khan academy too
I think you've summed it up perfectly, at least in my view. But there's also an idealism vs. pragmatism struggle going on. Many argue that unforgiving textbooks and classes challenge students to do their best, and it's an insult to their intelligence to make these resources more accessible. But many seasoned educators know that making a class too tough will just turn kids off--they only rise to the challenge gradually.
Pls come back 😭😢
Start making videos again!
You're a legend dude
My man, please come back and make videos.... 😭😭😭😭

Very true, ps: nice profile picture
Tyler,you are amazing.
Tyler DeWitt is the bridge from science literacy to understanding.
True
@@joinalayna hi
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
i 'm not kidding .. his student are super duper lucky !
I totally agree with you. If he was my chemistry teacher I would actually pay attention instead of reading a novel under my desk. Plus I would ace my exam Chem is my favorite along Math but our teachers make it super duper boring.
@@aashi4826 I had done that a lot of times hope my teacher doesn't see this
I swear to God. This man is a gift from God.
Perhaps you can impress him with the International Lion Dance. ;)
***** Kaust Shroff Hi, Knee-Jerkoffs, she did the international lion dance in one of her videos. Sorry, but you are bad at the internet and rude, too, dipshits.

Hi
Why am I crying over his speech? He's sooo passionate!
ikr. you can easily tell he really loves science from the bottom of his heart ♥ he saved me!
his voice can lighten up anyones day
This guy saved me in chemistry 。

He saved all of us haha
he's absolutely saved me from the horrible hole of chemistry .
You're not the only one
Forever 。 Forever 。 how
Just like Breaking Bad, Tyler Dewitt made me love chemistry again.

This guy is so awesome. I'm in college and I learned more from his UA-cam videos than my professors and textbooks combined.
omg so true!!!
yeah same goes here

So true
Teachers in late middle school and early high school have a crucial job in society. Around that age, kids who are interested in further education begin to figure out what they are passionate about in school. If all science and math classes don't make sense to students, they will not even think about pursuing a future in those fields. Tyler is so right. These courses need to make SENSE to 13 year olds. They won't make any sense if they are written the same way that experts in that particular science field communicate. Honestly, this could very well be the blame why the United States is at a critical shortage of STEM majors. This county is desperate for more scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and technologists.
so true, everything we learn sounds like scientific jargon. It's too much for me: I kinda hate science now because my teacher can't teach nor does she have the will to even help her students suceed.
+Juan Perez SAME OMG
+Juan Perez I'm in 9th grade and same. I'm more interested on literature and writing
This is absolutely right! No wonder we don't have any scientists and engineers!
This applies more to Biology and Chemistry. Lots of physics books are excellent though.
Oh my God! Tyler is a Legend!

it's so exciting seeing that Tyler Dewitt has had a TED Talk, I watched so many of his chemistry videos, it's like my own chemistry teacher is famous
i'm a high schooler taking AP chemistry and all our teacher does is use the book and does the most boring experiments (i've gone from LOVING chemistry/science in general, to regretting i ever took the coarse except to remind me that i NEVER want to major in this subject in college). So, THANK YOU Tyler for being the only way that i have continued to enjoy this subject as well as the only reason i have passed this course:) Your many videos inspire kids like me to learn, and actually enjoy learning... please continue to change the lives and futures of kids and teens. I can't say thank you enough for the difference its made in my life:)
They manage to make labs boring by forcing you to write out every single fucking step, explanation, hypothesis and other crap, it pisses me off because if it weren't for that I would actually be looking forward to it
I mean that is a part of science. There is a video on Tyler Dewitt where it explains about evidence hypothesis. That is normal
You should try that book sometimes, so you don`t have to re-take the "coarse".
This just gave me motivation x10!! I am in college currently taking chemistry and I always feel like a fucking idiot in that class and I don't understand anything yet I watch his videos and I understand everything!! Everything!! I not only learn the material but I learn to love chemistry! Seriously thank God for your videos!! Please don't stop making them!!
That's what education should be all about. I'm happy you found a way around all your crappy professors.
funnydayz i even started tutoring 😂😂😂
I totally agree with this man.
If you want to know why Wikipedia sucks watch this video.
There are three types of science writers/teachers:
1. Those that have forgotten, or never known what it means to be a novice. They communicate from the Stratosphere, for the occasional mortal who understands their convolutions.
2. Those who gloss the surface, and don't know the topic deeply enough to make it interesting for the reader, or student. I find these the most confusing. Pop science magazines are usually at this level.
3. People like this guy (watch his Chemistry vids...awesome), who know the topic deeply, then convey it in a way that is clear, concise, fun, interesting, and most importantly understands anticipated questions and pitfalls. a RARE breed. Solid Gold.
It only makes sense why Wikipedia is the way it is. It's a site that isn't meant for young students to learn from, there are other sites for children. You can't say that Wikipedia sucks just because it can't teach young children quantum physics with stories, because at the end of the day, we still need to be serious, and Wikipedia and other sites are meant for that. Middle-schoolers don't have to learn from Wikipedia, this is where teachers are SUPPOSED to come in, but sometimes, they just don't. We still need some people to show us the truth, no matter how boringly ugly it is. We still need to know what to call the process of "making copies of itself" is called. because we need to be specific sometimes, because that is just the way the world works now. And if you tell other scientists that viruses "slip their DNA into the bacterium" to "make copies of themselves" in a formal paper then, there is a very high chance that they will never take you seriously.
You confused an encyclopaedia with a textbook mate
He is absolutely right! No wonder why a large number of young kids avoid to comprehend science. It is true that for kids understanding the main point should be the goal!
What a caring heart, Tyler! Good speach, man. God bless.

Tyler is absolutely amazing! Every time I have a hard time understanding a concept in my Chemistry class I look for his videos. He is so great at explaining complex subjects in a straight-forward, easy to understand way. I wish more teachers felt the way he does...
Tyler!! Hey I want to deeply thank you, I mean the thing you do is really admirable, you are teaching for free, in purpose to spread knowledge, love for science! And I really appreciate that, because I can learn many more than in school by watching videos in youtube like the ones you do. Thank you so much, keep doing this
I wish my maths and chemistry was taught by this genius. I advice people to check his channel if doing chemistry its super helpful.
OMG I didn't recognize him at first, not until the end of the video. I am a huge fan of his videos, very simple, but yet, very informative. Really grateful.
You have such a gift for teaching and making it easy to understand! You also are PASSIONATE! So many teachers lack passion today. They use antiquated methods of learning for children, and they don't try to be innovative. You have always been our goto when the sorry chemistry teacher at my kids school, didn't take any initiative to care whether kids failed or understood. We KNOW our chemistry because of you, including the mom!! You are a rare kind! Thank you for sharing your gift!
Wow! Excellent! It takes great/deep understanding of a particular concept, to have the ability to break it down into simpler and less complex ideologies. I respect Tyler DeWitt for that. I'll also like to encourage the people reading this, to search for his page and watch his videos.

bacteria: "I don't feel so good"
I love this man. He's gotten me through my college chemistry course better than my actual professor and helped me get an A in chem 😊. He's a great teacher and we need more like him!
I love this kid, considering I'm 55 and my 18 year old told me, that he helped him pass chemistry in high school and I'm going to be taking it in college next week with his help I hope to pass, thank you, you are smart and your parents must be very proud of you 👏
Wow, so he's a PhD student at MIT. I've watched his Chemistry videos before I found this.. and it was great! Then, I also subscribed his channel without knowing he is a PhD student at MIT! I thought that he is nobody(a normal guy). And yeah, what I've learn from him is *Why so serious?*

I love Tyler...he is amazing and he"s one in amillion of those educators in the world who really care and pay attention to how a student ( no matter what kind of student ) will be able to absorb all the ideas and teaching...I started going back to school this January and his videos helped me soooo much on my chem ....and he made me " not to hate " chem by letting me understand really what is chemistry all about...He makes so much changes in so many student's life..I just hope that all teachers and professor will look the same way Tyler look how teaching should be.... GOD bless this man =)
YOU ARE SO GREAT!
Preach!
I took micro once with a young professor who was exactly like this text book example and seemed irritated when people would ask for breakdowns. It was a dreadful/silent class and I got a D.
Taking micro again with an older professor who doesn't mind cracking a joke or anecdotes and I can tell the class is much more engaged and willing to speak up.
You're simply amazing. I just got to know about UA-cam channel on Saturday morning thanks to a Internet search and I completed almost all your videos on chemistry. I had too many assumptions, and you brought such a good clarity. Thanks brother and keep the good work going. You're making difference to lots of guys.
That's a fantastic approach! Explaining science in such an engaging and easy-to-understand way can significantly increase students' interest and comprehension. It's impressive how you communicate with students, check their understanding, and try various methods to keep them interested. Thanks to teachers like you who break down complex concepts, students will grow to love science even more. I believe the true value of education lies in making learning enjoyable for students. I support your passion and encourage you to keep creating amazing lessons!

2:48 tyler can tell the future with that infinity war spoiler
I really want to cry right now. Tyler, you’re amazing! I have my chemistry final tomorrow and I’ve never been interested in science but the book language is SO TOUGH just as you said. Its so boring. I am going through your videos right now and i wish i had known about you before. But thank you so much for uploading videos! Its SO HELPFUL!! I WISH ALL Teachers were like this and textbooks were easy😭😭😭😭
this young teacher understands the importance of introducing science in simple words.thats touching
Till now I considered Neil deGrasse Tyson to be my one of my favorite science communicator... but now Tyler is also one of them... Feeling too sorry that I didn't know his name when I was in high school!!!
You're incredible, Tyler! I completely agree with you!
ppl like him dont appear too often in our lives. this guy really builds up our hopes in understanding science. wish more teachers were like him. sometimes when we look at the textbook we feel so irritated and tired that we cant even read for 5 minutes straight. but watching his videos makes it more easier and understandable. Thanks to Tyler Dewitt.
The best science teacher EVER in my life, even though I'm learning through my computer screen and as a college student. Thank you Tyler!!!!
what a man. i wish he could teach me in real life, ive learned so much from his videos
I LIKE THIS GUY SOOOO MUCH!!!!! THANK YOU FOR TEACHING AND BEING THIS AWESOME HUMAN YOU ARE!!!!
Tyler DeWitt explains each and every thing in detail and make them too easy. omg he is a legend. sir hats off to your attitude and your thinking technique . thanks a lot sir
We love you Tyler!!! You have inspired 10,000 by now, just this year!
I agree 100000000000000%%%%%%%%%--------------------------> I never use my chem text book, even when my professor asks us to read the chapter i have no clue what it's saying, plus my proffesor follows the book. I always leave the classroom clueless (another day, another disappointment and time wasted sitting ans listening to the professor bla bla bla bla.)
My only hope and real professor is youtube, TYLER DEWITT!!!!!!! I love science and thanks to him i can go to class with my head help up high! without him, i felt like i wasn't sure i could make it to my biochemistry major. I even thought it would be a hopeless dream. Please continue with your work and looking after us.THANK YOU SOOOO SO MUCH FOR HELPING ME AND THE REST OF US!!! Please oh please DO NOT stop. thanks to you i've made it pretty far, you're a huge example and great role model! Continue making more videos for us with the love and care! THANK YOU GOD BLESS YOUU! KEEP IT UP!

HEY! Of all places you found me on youtube lmao look me up on facebook.

I was listening your performance-elegant and simplistic, very understanding. I think i had a problem in the school at that time about text books -they were boring and pushed me away to learn from them. I tried to visualize what i wanted to learn and I do this till today. Simplistic method is very necessary with visual demonstration-to imagine what we are talking about-remarkable-please continue what you are doing, it is really nice and entertaining plus learning, wonderful.
congratulations to you and you are talented may i say. Drawing students to biological and chemical , whatever the subject is-it is not easy with "dry books". A lot's of teachers has no interest if the student inspired by learning or not. They are mostly like machines. (experience) I have no intention to say -every teachers are bad, but there are a lot of them who has no cape ability to sense to teach.
I am a high school science teacher and this vid popped up on my suggested videos. I clicked on it because I strive to make science fun for my students. I watched the video and did not recognize Tyler until he he showed screenshots of his chemistry videos. I watch his videos and use his stories in my lesson plans all the time!😆 This guy is awesome!
The best!! Thank you so much for everything! Thanks a centillion...
I understand about the bacteria part even though i'm on 7th grade and you are an awesome teacher! Keep up the good work. Your words really encourage students!
Happy little bacterium. Hehehe, I like that. I wish the happy little bacterium was a plushy
My chemistry teacher needs to see this ! My bio teacher taught like this and I understood everything taught but my chemistry teacher makes us read the book and I don't understand anything and my grades are being affected.
@zarazoostra Ah Man you're a legend
Wish more teachers were like this guy, science would have the space it deserves! I studied Biology and I am currently studying to become a teacher. I will make sure to teach the way he does, encouraging and making science a place where you can have fun, learn about the wonders that surround you, not cry because you can't memorize a bunch of technical and ridiculously precise words.
I seriously wanted to cry after watching this. You Sir are awesome. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us, you don't know how much we appreciate it!
2:46 Mr. DeWitt I don't feel so good...
Great video.... now what do we do about bad teachers........e_0
The man hit the nail on the head. The power of a great story is the key to teaching in nearly every content area.
He’s life saver. Best I’ve ever seen. He knows exactly how to teach n explain to students.
My old science teacher always said don't make fun of learning but make learning fun :') Mr tyler just reminded me of him :(
Science teachers aren't actually enthusiastic about science themselves thats why they don't make it fun.
and ew no physics.
btw i get really angry when the textbook aren't specific enough. so i kinda disagree with this guy but I am a minority so :/
I think he's making a different argument. Textbooks can still be specific. And also, intro to bio and chemistry classes already leave out a LOT of details. The problem is that it's portrayed in a way that nobody will understand. It's a problem with jargon.
True. My chemistry teacher, despite her crappy attitude towards us, doesn’t give out her best when teaching a lesson. It’s just never engaging.
I'm a teacher because I love science and want to show the world how freaking cool it actually is
Ive had 5 Chem test so far and you helped me pass all of them!! My final is in a couple weeks and im studying all ofyour videos plus some of my class notes. I consider you my professor.. THANK YOU!!!! ❤️
really powerful stuff. got turned off to hard science in high school for these exact reasons-- luckily ran into professors in junior college who made it fun/sparked my interest into hard sciences-- now well on my way to a biochem degree. Your youtube channel is awesome as well. Again, great talk.
I LUV UR VIDS PLS BE MY CHEM TEACHER 😭

I’m glad he’s teaching lol. He’s saved many people 😂
We need more of you all around. I'm starting to really like chemistry because I am able to understand whats going on now.
After seeing your videos i am really very very much impressed..thanks Tyler wish you the very best in your work..
You sir are a genius, science is such an interesting subject but portrayed in such a dull way it becomes un comprehensible to the majority. Everybody should understand the building blocks of life, how the solar system works etc but the way the "experts" speak of it is in such a way as to deter the majority
Tbh, I wish the world was like what Tyler said in this video! It is unlikely but at least we have resources!
totally awesome... I so wish my teachers had your passion... please never give-up on your dreams to make it fun.. I learnt more about chemistry in 1 hr of watching your videos than I ever did in school or collage.. and that wAS 20 YEARS AGO...
OMG!!! Im so thankful that i found your channel GODDD YOU MADE ME LOVE CHEMISTRY AGAIN!!!!
Im so thankful you made me speechless please don't stop making videos
This guy is a legend!!!!
My problem with science teachers(and other teachers) is not only they teach it in a not so intriguing way, but that a lot of teachers are really lazy, and they don't care about the students. I hate it when my teachers expect the students to copy loads of notes down, and listen at the same time. I cant multitask! I go to bio class, and leave the room, not understanding what I've learned that day because I spent the entire class struggling to catch up on the notes. That for me, is a problem. I am also soo pissed of that many teachers are paid huge bucks and as a student, I'm not allowed to take pictures of my test too study what I did wrong because my teachers are too effing lazy to remake another test for next year's students? Is my learning more important or ur comfort more important? Obviously, I am not directing this to all the teachers because i know only some teachers are like this. But i do want to put this out there because I wish more teachers would take their job seriously. That's it for my rant. if any teachers come across this comment, think about ur impact on students, and at least try to make our learning experience less stressful because whether we understand something, and how well we do on test will affect our marks, aka our future. CONTRIBUTE
Thanks
Thank you for your feedback :) I would like you to consider that most people are lazy; not just teachers. We teach because, "we make big bucks" and if we are lazy the company doesn't loose money and we keep our jobs - government. A bit of a secret? Since I graduated from University, no one has asked to see my high school transcripts. Go easy on yourself, and others, it's really not that important. A sense of humor will take you a long way... Sorry that you feel everyone should be more serious. My only job is to make sure the kids can do University.
And of course, by the same token, this is what we see as teachers:
1. Many students are lazy, and don't want to take their studies seriously.
2. We live in a media driven, pop-culture, anti-intellectual society (here in the U.S.)
Given that, you're asking me to fix it in the 40 minutes you spend with me everyday by taking my job more seriously?
But I don't totally disagree. Lots of teachers suck.
Jim Keller Me and one of my better teachers were actually talking about this and these 2 points were brought up. Here's some of the insight we came across:
Your first point is true to some extent and while students should be meeting the teachers half way down the road, they lack the motivation to do so. Students need teachers who can bring some gratification out of what they teach and use it to show students they have a reason to learn. It also helps to build some trust. For example, my history teacher I mentioned earlier dedicates every Friday to simply having class discussions with the students. No agenda, no outline, no nothing. He doesn't care when we go off topic because he trusts that somehow we'll relate it back whether it be through a joke or serious thought.
As for the second point - negligence
We made rockets in my science class and shot them off. Guess what? Some kids were so lazy, they wouldn't even make a rocket, and we did it IN CLASS!!! Ha! They didn't get to go when we went to shoot our rockets off the launcher.
Wow...not tru at my school
His is best chemistry teacher.... every student wants a teacher like him in school who not just teach but make it fun.✨
أفضل من شرح الكيمياء... أقدر كل ثانية أمضاها في فيديوهاته التي ساعدت الاف الطلاب...شكرااا من القلب
This guy got me through CHM111. All teachers should mimic him.
*Shows this video to my Chemistry teacher so she can stop rushing and I can gain interest again*
Just entering high school..and really interested in chemistry but never found even a single friend of mine to accompany me. For them, its total debris but now I think u and ur videos are gonna be a great companion..thanks a lot!!!
I'm so happy to have stumbled on Mr. DeWitt's youtube videos. I've learned way more from him than when I was a student.
I guess science is somewhere in the middle between story telling and reading boring textbooks. As an 18-year-old IB student I watch videos of people such as Tyler DeWitt and Paul Andersen (Bozeman Science) to understand concepts firstly and then I sit down and actually go through my textbook. It's a lot easier to study (and hence get good grades) from boring textbook if you already know the basis.
One thing that makes me really pissed is that there are actually very few teachers who understand that the real challenge is to explain difficult processes and reactions in simple words because that's what's gonna save me from talking gibberish about these topics.
i'm not big on science but i throughly enjoyed that. basically, text books need to be like rapgenius.com
Hahah, funny, but not a bad idea.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, for all of your videos!! I can honestly say because of them I am finally understanding and enjoying my college chemistry class!!!
I went from getting a zero on my college chemistry quiz to getting an A on the test because of Tylers videos. He is truly a life saver! Explains difficult concepts in a way that is easy to understand. Thank you Tyler!!!
The chemistry teacher I'm having in my classes literally speaks of nothing but those textbook lines, repeating those lines again and again, then saying to us: "The class is over, read the chapter till what we have completed and you'll be having a test the next day"... This absolutely made me hate chemistry than any other subject, then I came accross his channel and now I can say that SCIENCE IS COOL...
Fr. HATED chemistry until I found him. Now I enjoy it more and more everyday :)
"I dont feel so good... Im sorry...."
From simple to complex :my students and me love Tyler DeWitt videos on chemistry.
speechless...it got straight to my heart, mind and soul. Amazing energy, long live the reckless and the brave🦾🦾🦾
I've always wanted to be an art teacher but he makes me want to be a science teacher because I'm sick of learning science under the tyranny of precision hahaha
Omg, if it were not for Tyler i would not be passing my chem 2a class in college. This stuff is so hard and my teacher is, well....lets just say, NOT TYLER material. I love the way he explains things and i can understand and actually (not that kid Tyler mentioned lol) i really do like it and understand it which even surprises me cause i really don't like chemistry. I love the way he teaches and the approach he has. We need to first understand the material and the we can learn about anything else that come along.... He is a superb teacher i wish he could teach my college. ii CAN guarantee that all his classes will ALWAYS be on waiting list... He is truly a gift to us. Thank you Tyler for all your efforts and all your videos.
Much love :)
God bless you man
Best teacher of all time
You're saying what wrong with other educators and how to teach other. It's just blow my mind
Tyler truly makes learning fun and easy to follow. Our educators really need to have this enthusiasm when teaching.
