  • Rena Rolska - Trzy listy (Three Letters) (Boruński /Jurandot) English waltz from theatre "Ali Baba" revue "Orzeł czy Rzeszka" (The Eagle or The Reich) on the 3rd of Sept, 1939
Rec. in Warsaw, "Muza", ca 1960
NOTE: This is one of the most beautiful songs composed in pre-war Warsaw. It's premiere was planned for the 3rd of September, 1939 in "Ali Baba" -- a new Warsaw little stage of song and satire -- in the revue "Orzeł czy Rzeszka" which, after sumer holidays of 1939 was supposed to open the new season in Warsaw. However, the "revue" that was opened instead was directed by Adolf Hitler -- not by Andrzej Włast any more. The bombs that falled on the Polish capital on Friday morning of the 1st of September 1939, meant -- first of all -- the end of freedom for Poland for next half of century, the beginning of an agony of the most beautiful Polish city, but also - end of the most wonderful period in history of Polish song and cabaret.
After WW2 was ended, the song was released by Wiera Gran in ca late 1950s, in Paris. Personally, I prefer the version recorded a few years later in Warsaw, by Rena Rolska. She was, in my opinion, one of the best post-war performers of tangoes and slowfoxes from 1920s and 30s. I like her modesty, her warm, and not very affectionate (on contrary to Wiera Gran's ) voice and her wonderful musicality. In early 1980s, however, Rolska suddenly closed down her stage career and never returned to public performances. See in YT another great Polish hit of 1930s sung by Rolska • Rena Rolska sings Artu...
One more line has to be said about a title of a revue "Orzeł czy Rzeszka" (The Eagle or The Reich) which proves again, how sophisticated was the sense of humour in prewar cabarets of Warsaw. White Eagle is a symbol of Poland, and The Reich is The Reich, no need to explain it's meaning. In a Polish title, however, the word "Rzesza" (the Reich) is used in its diminutive "Reszka", meaning ironically "a small Reich" as well as "tails" (back side of a coin). Also "an eagle" -- Polish national symbol - can be "heads". So, to say "An Eagle or the Reich" refers, rather bitterly and very much in a "Chaplinian" way - to throwing coins.. And it's exactly how the history often acts...
The song has been illustrated by photographs of Ingrid Bergman - one of my favourite actresses.

Hello Grzegorz - this masterfully done performance by Rena Rolska - this understated depths of the feeling accurately depicts the pain of love. What is interesting that Ingrid Bergman's - several "loves" of her lives - betrayed her deeply. In spite of that - Ingrid Bergman stated that she would never chose differently - even if she knew what would happen later. Thanks for this vid!

Thank you so much for this song !!! I have been looking for it for several years now. I even visited Poland, and asked around. It hasn't been released on a CD at all... One of the most beautiful songs ever composed - very much Chopin-like ! I grew up in rural Poland in the 70's listening and memorizing the whole album "Do You Live Alone Madam ?". I just made transcription of this beautiful melody, and will be performing it in concerts with Russian violinist. We may even record it !

Tres, tres triste--but also beautiful. Many of us can identify with the lyrics, even that charming old slang word "toodle-oo."

@Coupal1 In Poland you can sometimes find them on the web auctions. Also, many people still keep their vinyls and her recordings are available in private collections. Perhaps, some of her vinyls have been transformed into CDs, but I never came across any. She never was a mainstream singer, thoug.

@tango3721 Thank you, Lana. Ingrid was such a sweetheart, indeed. She had the same nature as the heroines she performed in her movies. She was sincere, sensitive and understanding, with a great heart. She was easy to hurt but she never paid back in the same bad way, as she was treated. And she was such an intelligent actress! I simply adore her. I'd give hundred Zarahs or Marlenas for one ounce of Ingrid.

Thank you! This is one of the most beautiful songs that I've heard (I've heard if for the first time with Kalina Jędrusik)...
It will be a problem if I ask for the source of the translation? (Honestly, I'm too lazy to do a transcription from the video... sorry)

@abendstunde49 Thank you. But I have to tell - frankly and without any kind of a "return compliment" - that I am a great fan of your clips, too. They are the mini-movies with a little story and action in them. There's always a certain idea behind the show - and it's not merely the music that acts, but also the intelligent and skilfull selection of pictures and the montage. Perhaps it's your "professional secret" but I'd be glad to know what kind of a Movie Maker you use?

Touching this composition by Boruński/jurandot..so is the suberb orchestral arrangement that drives the song..
Someday, is it possible for you inf.the name of the arranger in charge for the song? ..and i agree with about the comparison between the singers R.Rolska and W.Gran..

@barbcard I knew you'd draw your attention to this word! I like it a lot, though. All these lovely elder ladies of the 1960s or early 1970 - a Sophie Tucker or Mrs Mills types - would say good bye tom each other in this way, wouldn't they?
