  • Rena Rolska & Zespół Taneczny Wiesława Machana - Zawsze będzie czegoś ci brak (There will always be something you long for) English waltz (J.Markowski - W.Stępień) Pronit c.1960 (Polish)
NOTE: Rena Rolska was already presented here a couple of times in her most interesting repertoire - in her re-makes of old Polish hits from the interwar period: Hanka Ordonówna's tango "Sam mi mówiłeś" (It's You Who Told Me So) • Beautiful Polish Tango... Artur Gold's slowfox Gdy w Ogrodzie Botanicznym zakwitna bzy (When the Lilacs Will Bloom in a Botanic Garden) • Rena Rolska sings Artu... and another beautiful English waltz from the year 1939 "Trzy listy" (Three Letters) • Last Polish hit before... .
During the 1960s, Rena Rolska was one of the most popular singers in Poland. Born in 1932 in Warsaw, she had the interwar style in her veins. With her soft alto, she was able to create the genuine atmosphere of a small artistic café, somewhere in Nowy Świat street in prewar Warsaw, and in the communists-ruled Poland of the 1960s, her talent of mimicking the lost world of interwar Poland made her a favorite singer of older generation of Poles. She enjoyed popularity still in the 1970s, yet in 1980s she decided, her artistic identity cannot compete any longer with the rock madness in Poland and she ceased once and for good her artistic career.
The beautiful English waltz “Zawsze będzie czegoś ci brak” had been presented in this channell already twice: one version was Adam Aston’s • 71st Anniversary of W... and another - by Albert Harris • Albert Harris - Zawsze... . I think, Rena Rolska’s quality goes very well along with those two masters of Polish prewar chanson. This song belongs to a handful of last great hits of prewar era in Poland: published on records and sheet notes in turn of 1938/39 it immediately became an evergreen. It’s melancholic melody as well as text referring to a farewell and longing, was an appropriate addendum to a general mood of the Poles during the last months before catastrophe. I did my best to give some reflection of that atmosphere - which in a way, has reference to the last hours of the drowning Titanic - by presenting in my slideshow the last moments before invasion of the German army on Poland, on the 1st of September 1939.
ATTENTION to Everyone: I'm afraid, this clip must be my farewell to you for several days, when I'll be travelling abroad. But I'll see you back here in a little more than a week - and I hope to see you all in perfect state of mind and spirit. Cheeerioo! I'm leaving you for several days, but with Rena Rolska as a lovely hostess. See you soon :-)

Hello Grzegorz and all the clickers - Rena Rolska's voice plus her interpretation - shows her immense talent; I remember her singing via the televised concerts - and her camera presence was also impressive. Your evocative visuals - bring back tons of great memories. Have a wonderful few days of vacations - all of us already miss you - a lot - but the time will go fast since the glorious autumn is finally here. It's going very fast in spite of mine and other lovers of the fall season - desires - to "slow down" the time. All of us will have a great new week - especially you - Grzegorz. Sending everybody tons of fall greetings from sunny and cool - hilly neighborhood of New York City.

Grzegorz, what a haunting note on which to take your temporary leave. This exquisite recording is at once stylish and, conveying much more substance, wistful and full of longing. I'm glad there was at one time an audience for Rena Rolska's nostalgic yet timeless magic. Loved this show. Have a wonderful trip!

Thank you, Elisabeth. I will see all of you again next week! I'm flying quite a long way to the remote corner of the Mediterranean. I will spend several days in a lonely hotel on a cliff, overlooking the sea and the port, with the line of the cedar-wood covered mountains behind. My best to all of you and see you soon!

Dearest Genia, the Catholic Church has never interpreted the 5th commandment (“"thou shalt not kill") in the spirit of radical pacifism. This commandment could be translated as: Do not murder. There is a difference between killing and murder. Therefore, for example, the Polish Insurgents, who in in Warsaw in January 1864 rose with guns in their hands against Russian occupation of Poland , are heroes for us, not murderers. The same situation was in summer 1939, when most of Poles were aware of the approaching German assault on Poland, therefore the military equipment was not blessed as such - but as your instrument of morally correct struggle for saving the freedom of your country and against your neighbour’s aggression. The priests also blessed the soldiers, to act in accordance with the God’s rules and to return to their families alive. Therefore, the act of “blessing the guns” must be analysed on many levels and in various contexts. Of course, there will always be situations of war that can lead to dilemmas. But I do not think the answer is just the pacifism.
