SpaceX & Astronauts Ready To Rescue Hubble But NASA Says NO...
SpaceX & Astronauts Ready To Rescue Hubble But NASA Says NO...
On April 24, Nasa's Space Hubble telescope turned 34 years old.
Although was not the first space telescope, Hubble is one of the largest and most versatile, renowned as a vital research tool and as a public relations boon for astronomy.
SpaceX & Astronauts Ready To Rescue Hubble But NASA Says NO...
So, to keep this great telescope healthy in space, Nasa carried out periodic costly rescue missions aboard its retired space shuttle.
But now, they can not do it anymore. The limited availability of reliable vehicles and budget forced the national agency to call for free help from private companies, especially SpaceX.
In response, SpaceX has prepared everything needed for this critical future mission including rockets, spacecraft, high-quality experts, and even spacesuits.
SpaceX & Astronauts Ready To Rescue Hubble But NASA Says NO...
The Hubble telescope is named after astronomer Edwin Hubble and is one of Nasa's Great Observatories. Throughout its length of history and more than 1.6 million observations, this telescope sent back to Earth jaw-dropping images of the universe, expanding our understanding of space.
In 1990, it was deployed by Nasa’s Space shuttle to an altitude of 600 kilometers above the Earth's surface. That orbit has gradually decayed from atmospheric drag and is currently at about 535 kilometers. Continued decay creates a 50% probability that Hubble will reenter by 2037. Of course, the gradual fall in space is not Hubble's only issue.

I think that NASA also those that say SPACEX should not do it , they are afraid that if a private company can do what NASA and their highly trained astronauts have done , and they can do it a lot cheaper ,then why fund that part of the agency. Just let them stick to sending their probes, rovers, etc.

Sounds like they are trying to say that spaceX would not be able to make sure that the suits will work properly.
Put the suits in a vacuum chamber and test them out at twice or three times the pressure to make sure the suits will do the job properly? Shoot micro particles at high velocity at the suits to make sure they can hold up in space. They will also have to make sure that the tether will carry the proper oxygen to the space suits. The tether will hold up in space and won’t be damaged from micrometers.

Great Video ! Send the SpaceX Crew Dragon and/or the Boeing Starliner to dock with the Hubble Space Telescope to raise the orbit of the Telescope ! Later the Blue Origin Blue Moon HLS can dock with the Hubble Space Telescope for repair by doing a EVA/Space Walk using the Canadian Arm ! The Blue Moon HLS should have an Air Lock/Dust Lock (per Mike Griffin-NASA Headquarters), a Crew Module with a Docking Port to support a four person Crew, a 6.1 km/sec delta-V (per Robert Zubrin-"Moon Direct") and be Single Stage and Reusable ! The Blue Moon HLS/LEV/LLV can then support missions in LEO, HST, GEO and one way flights to the moon to be serviced for return ! The Tech developed to return to the moon to stay, can take US and the world to Mars and beyond ! Later the SpaceX Starship can recover the Telescope to earth to be serviced for reflight ! tjl

NASA has a record of favouring new projects over extending old ones. Hubble is an exceptionally long-lived one, and NASA will have a similar new project, the Nancy Roman Telescope, with science operations shared between STScI at Johns Hopkins and IPAC at Caltech starting circa 2027. NASA may be thinking about rationalization of operations. Similar considerations have governed the operation or closure of smaller ground-based telescopes for many years (though fortunately in space one does not have to worry about resurgent ethno-religious claims to mountain tops...).

  • @adenwellsmith6908
    @adenwellsmith6908 24 дні тому +1

Refurbish. You also might look at changing it's orbit both higher and to a better orbit for more servicing .
Then with starship coming online, you could launch a big telescope in the visible and UV light regime, that is serviceable.
What would an 8 meter diameter telescope achieve in space? Starship has a 9m diameter. Hubble has a 2.4 meter mirror.
An 8 meter telescope has 11 times the light gathering power. Sensors are now even better.
Another option is have the robot to boost Hubble, to have its own gyros. They then do the work that the gyros that Hubble currently uses. Fully robotic.

Yes, just boost it so it stays in orbit for 5 or 10 more years. By then there will be a starship or other craft capable of bringing it back.
      But forget NASA.
SpaceX should do it on their own and claim salvage rights. Then sell it to the Smithsonian or outer museum or put it on display at a SpaceX office. Or Blue Origen or whoever can salvage it.

And even if they repair it without boosting it in 2029, they could come back on another mission in 2030 just to boost it.

ISS is at an orbit at least 100 KM below that of Hubble. That lower orbit also has issues with Space Junk. Several times the ISS has had to move or prepare for collisions with incoming space debris. But SpaceX could plan a mission for 2030. There isn't a need to rush a mission.

The Gemini and Soviet spacewalks were not without issues. Many of the astronauts had problems with the visor fogging, or tears obscuring vision. The first Soviet Cosmonaut to walk in space had issues with their space suit inflating so bady that they could not re-enter the airlock, they actually had to bleed air out of their suit. Working on Hubble is magnitudes beyond what the Gemini astronauts were asked to do... and with out a shuttle to brace it... the work becomes more complicated, and risky.

This is a good example of the fact that now there seem to be two wings of SpaceX: the falcon nine wing and the starship wing. The falcon nine wing is open, consult with engineers from other disciplines and other organizations, is honest about what their capabilities are, and only makes commitments that they can actually keep. The starship wing or the Elon wing is closed, Hides what they’re doing, does not give any real insight into what they can and cannot really do, makes wild promises about what starship is going to be capable of, and seems to be staffed with engineers that are either not allowed to do their job correctly or just don’t know how to do their job correctly. I blame Elon for this because the decisions that have been made in the development and testing of starship clearly are those of a chucklehead. A good example of how the starship wing or Elon wing of SpaceX is blowing. It is the secret development of the heat shield. Where are pictures of the test rig for the heat shield? Where is data about the testing and the development of the heat shield? Where is the consultation with people who had experience with the space shuttle heat shield? The wild claims made for the heat shield have to be made because Elon is promising that the starship will be rapidly reusable! If the heat has to be repaired after every flight, the starship stage will not be rapidly reusable, nor will it be terribly economical.
