I remember when this came out. It didn't have signal lights in the USA. It wasn't street legal. The motorcycle magazine said it ran like it had "a potato stuffed in the exhaust". The magazine changed the muffler and said the power improved and was "enormous". Back in the day when motorcycle magazines did journalism instead of infomercials. I didn't realize these were selling for such high prices these days.
Hi, great project and I would probably go the way of mainly stock but polish the ports, good quality brakes and rebuild the suspension. Good luck and you will have a great time on this bike 👍.
i remember seeing that bike a few years back for sale with the yellow frame and seat, pretty grim it needs re restoring after a restoration. One thing i noticed on mine is they shake themselves to bits and barely last an hour before something comes loose. and its basically worn out bolts front engine mount which makes me think crank balancing is vital to try and eliminate as much of the vibration as you can and loctite everything. must be a bit squirilly with the swing arm moving about like that. had my rear shock rebuilt on my 250k by MTS suspension , cost a heap but transformed the bike
Yeah, that was it. S'pose you saw the yellow framed one in the video. Massive lemon and we all make mistakes, but I wanted one and it was for sale. If only I knew now what I didn't know back then. Anyway...
' 84 It 490 is a gem of an offroad bike. 100 mph and gets there fast. Impractical on tight trails unless you are 6'3" 220 lbs. I would rather an IT 250. Best offroad bike was KDX 200. Kdx 220 was crap .
Hi Tim, yeah, bought the bike for £6,050 off an ebay seller here in the UK and this is the condition it was in. Gonna do a full breakdown of all the costs at the end of the entire series.
Hello... i'm sorry to say that but is not a 1983 ! is an 1984 because in 83 the IT had no indicator and the frame was different there was no battery holder, I know because I had an 83.
That engine running, the pang pang pang, brings back memories of my own IT490 from back in the day
Great bike had a ride on new one back in 1983 lovely engine lot of torque.
I had a it400 back in my riding days. Great bike for me
Very nice project for The Classic Motorcycle Channel, I look forward to seeing how you restore a great bike.

Nah, wasn't too bad. Being rebuilt completely anyway now mate
490 onepot 2stroke, 40+ Nm, sounds vicious to me. O.O
Bro you got a hole in the pipe up front!
Haha, little bit more than that wrong with the bike
