Saying its a work of art would be an understatement if I had the vocabulary to say otherwise. I'm drooling with envy. The attention to detail and the realism is phenomenal in itself. The smoothness operation of the switch and accompanying trackwork is to be admired. My trains are not worthy to ride those rails. I tip my hat to you and the others who exhibit this craftsmanship.
Hand laying track is the way to go if you want to put the time in. I plan on hand laying track on my next HO Scale module. The beauty is in laying the weathered ties and ballasting for a clean application of the rail to follow. Good stuff. Cheers.
This is a REALLY NICE handlaid switch. And I mean REALLY NICE. Handlaid rail and switches is the best. But it is very tedious and time consuming. 99.99910% of model railroaders shy FAR away from handlaid laying rail. But it is THE best for prototype results.
Thank you. Our club has a great craftsman that has humbly produced our track and turnouts for decades, and the reliability of our layout is a direct result of his work. There are over 16+ scale miles of double track main + industry sidings that are all hand laid, with EVERY rail spiked.
Great tool. I bought one on ebay years ago. Mine was set up for code 100 when I bought it, but I got the extra parts from Kadee to convert it to use with code 70/83. Very easy to convert it, so I can always switch it back easily as I saved all the code 100 parts. I may sell it one day, not sure as they're hard to come by, but I don't have a use for it these days.
They come up enough on eBay (at least 15+ a year). There are 2 up there right now. Kadee has been wonderful in still supporting it for parts and spikes as well.

Sorry for the lateness. Our roadbed is multi layered. Benchwork, then wood risers, then spline work, then plywood, then a 1 3/8” wide strip board, then the track. I should do a video showing the layers!
Amazing work. One question in between the rails there at the frog it looks like metal? I’m a young enthusiast doing my research as I’m building and laying my first layout so any advice is gratefully accepted. Thanks and again beautiful work!
Do hope your craftsman is training other members on how to build the turnouts so more than one person is skilled at this. Also, since the spiked is no longer sold as a complete assembly will they run out of the spikes used in the unit? Lucky I have one but my local hobby store says they can't order spikes for me anymore. Where do you get your spikes? Very nice trackwork! You can tell it's good by the way the equipment rolls thru the switches.
Sorry for not replying to the main comment sooner. Kadee still makes the spikes and keeps an active inventory of them. We recently placed an order with Kadee no problem. We have others in the club that are trained on track laying, so we enjoy learning together.

@@timmorrow5467 Hi Tim. I still have the Kadee Spiker I never put it up for sale. It is in one of the many boxes of train HO train stuff I have here with Brass engines, freight cars, etc. It is still in the original Kadee box. Phil

I just never got around to it as I was doing other model railroad stuff and working my business. It's really a matter of me finding which box of train stuff is in it (I have about 40-50 boxes of HO train stuff my dad sent me over the years), but I did see it a few months ago when looking for something else.

There are a lot of hand-laid elements from our club layout I want to highlight and share. Hand-laid track like this seems to be a lost art.

Fast Tracks handlaid track website has spikes, and tools, and ties an everything.
