it’s the fact that black people were teased for the colour of their skin, their lips, their body. back when I was in school, I was teased for my lips because they weren’t normal they were ‘big’ or were similar to ‘duck lips’. but today other races are tanning their skin to look darker, getting lip and butt injections. and getting braids. I was called medusa in school because of my long black braids.
It's sad that people make fun of people for their naturally occurring differences and it shouldn't be the case ...but it doesn't make sense to say that people that aren't from a certain culture can't do a certain thing just cause it isn't from their culture

Something i found interesting about this is your response to Amala. When she made valid points, all you said what "she just doesnt understand." And youre all literally discriminating against people by restricting people to their culture based on their race, which is literally racism. You lost the argument because you had nothing besides emotion and how you feel. And i know you dont actually think that POC can appropriate to be racist, your side is obly complaining about white people, which shows how you really feel about them. Also I'm Native American, so no you cant pull the "youre just an uneducated white person!" Card on me.

Disregarding that Amala has black in her is messed up, she says that part of her experience was not being white enough and not being black enough. Everyone can discuss a topic regardless of race, as a white person people have called me a colonizer, a cracker, and even told me I should die. Does that sound like fair treatment?

I feel like you articulated the point very well and you hit on some major points. I also feel like they don’t care. We don’t stand in unison enough to make a real difference (I.e the black lady that thinks “it’s not that big of a deal”) people capitalize off of that but it’s to all of our disadvantage in the community across the board on all levels. What is to their advantage is to our disadvantage and that is what is dismissed. They know that. What’s lacking is the understanding that black people need to have in order to prevent that. Starting with standing unison as a cultural community rather than an opposing individual.
Dr. PHIL was out of pocket to ask him 'are those really on the same level? Really! Yea a black man with Locs would be profiled WAY quicker than a white man with Locs. This isn't hard to UNDERSTAND!
Actually it isn't. I wouldn't expect him to really understand it from his angle. And that's the thing. Gotta stop trying to explain everything to someone how its this and/or that. Some things people have to actually be in to know and understand. They have to have it happen to them to know so its best to find something that is general across the board for every person so that way they can know what you mean or just not even further the conversation with them.
The messed up thing is that they're both profiled anyways. A black man with locs is considered a "drug dealer" or some dumb shiiit. And a white man with locs is a considered a "stoner or dumb." Its ridiculous.
I am a african american and Nigerian, a democrat and for the most part liberal. But i disagree with yours and that professor's point of view. Although I acknowledge white supremacy, white privilege, discrimination and the problems we are dealing with still due to slavery, i do believe people have become way to sensitive and in their feelings. Many times, we scream cultural appropriation for a culture when the native culture seems it as appreciation. If i go to mexico and buy a sombrero, am i guilty of appropriation. If my friend goes to nigeria who is white or filipino and buys native attire, is it cultural appropriation? No, its not. If the person likes the style, let them wear it. We get too in our feelings about this when there are bigger things to solve.
The buying of a Sombrero hat and/or other native attire from the people who are from those very culture are not appropriation. Appropriation is something that is adopted by those who have no part in the creation or dissemination or continuation of a particular item. The Sombrero hat financially enriches the Mexican human who sells it to you. The native attire economically enriches the native people who sell it to you. What people don't realise about braids is that people of African descent enslaved as part of the Atlantic Slave trade, wore their hair in braids through all those decades/centuries. Enslaved women in South America braided their hair in a pattern that was a map of escape routes from the areas where they were enslaved to places where they would be free. No colonizer is entitled to this. It is sacrilege.
@@akankshavreddy14296 pretty rich coming from someone who approves mexicans working as slaves in modern days. If we go this route, there is a ton of stuff that black people shouldn't be wearing, just because it is not part of your culture originally. You guys are cherry picking topics about culture more than church verses from the bible.
@akankshavreddy14296 Hey, I am genuinely asking, so please don't take this negatively, but as an African who's ancestors were not enslaved in the same way as African American. Our ancestors did not hide food nor create maps with their hair so would this mean of I do braids it is culture appropiation because my ancestors did not? I finds it interesting that most Africans do not mind.
Thanks for sharing this. You did well in that environment. It was unfair and biased. Dr. Phil in my opinion is appropriating a therapist and a TV host. He is not conducting himself in the manner of a therapist. If he was he wouldn't have been combative with his questions and response. He hasn't attempted to get to resolution; which therapist do. Neither parties have gained new insight or respect after this show. I wouldn't pay him to be a peer mediator for a daycare let alone an adult.
You've handled yourself very well and I am in awe of your story and of the business you've built. Know that shows like that always try to shed a negative light. Continue to shine bright and remember to protect your energy from fools and nonsense.
Amala is not even African American. I'm Nigerian, she is half Nigerian. She didn’t grow up in African American household or culture. She doesn’t know African American culture or intimate history.
I'm now unfollowing the other girl I knew she was on some bs when she felt she had to bring up the "I'm a biracial black women" and she's not fully black I feel like she shouldn't have been defending the black people that weren't offended by cultural appropriation because she's not fully black and has had white experiences/influences from what a person who grew up with 2 black parent's would have, like she said the debate/discussion wasn't equal
Well I'm fully black and I agree with what she said. But then liberal black people would silence me saying my view doesnt matter because it doesn't fit their narrative. I don't subscribe to the victim narrative. Yell can keep it. Because black lives don't matter to you guys if they don't think like you. It's not about individuality or being unique. It's still about fitting in a box.
I think this argument can go both ways- yes as a biracial women she would have white experience/influence but at the same time she would also have black experience/influence. I’m biracial myself so my opinion might be influenced by that 😅 but personally I myself have had more black experience- that’s because my white father was adopted into a black family. So he never really had a white experience/influence, and having a black raised white man for a father and a black raised black woman for a mother I’ve only had that black experience/influence. I’m only saying this to say that we don’t know how she was raised, I mean that in the sense of we don’t know if she’s had both white and black experience growing up. But that’s just me, stay safe everybody 🫶🏽
So what I’m hearing from you is that black woman can’t and aren’t allowed to wear blonde wigs because it’s a white person hair color and black people can’t straighten their hair because it’s a white hair style. This goes two ways lady
Straight hair isn't owned by white people so how is it a "white girl hairstyle"? There are various races with straight hair. When I flat iron my God given hair, it doesn't look or feel anything like white peoples hair. It looks and feels like my own hair straightened. Even when black women wear weaves and wigs, that hair does not come from Europe. Alot of it comes from Asian countries particularly India. As far as blonde hair, there are even black people born with blonde hair. Yes it's rare but it exists even in Africa. However, given the history of this country and its beauty standards I'm sure at some point the blonde ideal influenced other cultures. I think dark hair is much more attractive but now days even when black women wear blonde hair, it looks absolutely NOTHING like white women's hair. We as black women have very diverse looks and skin tones. EVERY hair shade can work on a black woman depending on what her skin tone is. Box braids are directly from our culture and there are still black women getting discriminated against for our cultural hairstyles. It isn't fair others can wear it to be cool without the discrimination and not even pay homage to where it comes from.I am not personally offended when others wear them but I do understand why some are.
@@Jess-hf9meyes Different races have different hairstyles but when some people like this thing has been a bit trendy some people with looser textures have been getting perms that make the hair look like an afro but thats wrong because it is more common among black people listen oo naturally straight hair is common among white people but it is not wrkng to straughten and dye hair blonde okay then
@@Jess-hf9meThat is a long explanation to defend double standards. It seems you're making it more of a skin color issue than a cultural appropriations issue. That is why you think it's OK for black people to wear wigs made from straight Indian hair & that somehow isn't considered cultural appropriation.
as a biracial female amala & no other biracial people should speak for the black community because black people have had different experiences from us.
Dr. Phil and his staff knew that they were gonna push this narrative 🙄 😒! You're absolutely right stating that his show was not the show to speak on this subject. He does that a lot on his show. He has already picked a side very before hearing anyone out. It's almost gut wrenching to watch this episode or any show like it because our side is rather ever heard. I truly respect your professionalism during this whole thing and it shows how true your statement was true.
Brittany on everything you pointed out and stated was absolutely the truth. She cannot speak on anything as a bi-racial woman because her experience has not been the same as a black woman. I'm glad you experience your first time on a major network. Thanks for standing your ground and explaining in detail what culture appropriation is. As you stated they know what they are doing when they take and use anything we created for their own profit.
And as a white person she can’t speak on behalf of me and on the white experience. Every bit of our culture and our cultural achievements have been shared with the world out of our own altruism. And yet none of us complain when others try to take credit for our achievements or use our creations.

The episode was very disturbing and upsetting. And the it’s an “American” thing is true, however, if you do your research, true Africans have taken offense in general about cultural things. That’s why many other countries despise Americans. It’s insensitive.
Congrats to reaching another platform , Dr Phil Show! People have told me wearing my hair in its natural state is not professional or your hair is prettier straight. I received statements like this from coworkers, colleagues, family and friends alike. This was some years ago when natural hair was not as accepted. Now natural styles are “in style” and “on trend.” Thankfully I love my curly hair and love myself as GOD made me. I didn’t let comments get to me and make want conform because of someones opinion. I stand you and how you feel. Black women should be able to wear their hair without worry of discrimination and remarks. We just want our respect. 💕
When you started talking abt how the black race, mostly black Americans because of the history you guys have gone thru, has boundaries I immediately thought about the “n” word issue. Black peoples have continually vocalized that it’s preferred that non-colored people not say the word, yet they do all the time and have even normalized it in certain spaces. But as a Haitian who grew up in America I understand why it’s important to gatekeep such a profound word within the community, black people around the world don’t have the same mindset we do hence why that woman in the audience said the boundaries don’t seem so rigid
I just finished watching a news report about the Florida governor wanting to ban African-American courses from all Florida’s educational institutions. Then this video popped up in my “Recommendation” list. These folks know what they’re doing.
And black women are obsessed with wigs, hair that literally comes from other women of other races heads. Pathetic double standards. The even go as far as far as BLEACHING their skin. 😂 Professional victims.
The show definitely pushed their narrative. Side Note: Kim K is wearing a basic wig and yet the court of public opinion gives her credit for “creating this amazing look”. The fact remains that black women and white women are treated differently for the exact same hairstyle wig etc especially in a professional capacity. The same hairstyle Kim K is wearing and being praised for can get a black woman fired and/or overlooked for opportunities Make it make sense. Help me understand why this isn’t a problem
Well celebrities do get credited for everything. Rihanna has never created an original thing in her entire life and yet she is credited for everything she does. Nicki is credited for dying her hair and that aesthetic when she herself said she was inspired by Asian aesthetics. Beyonce is credited for "lemonade braids" (BTW all these credits are non official it's just media and fans who credit this stuff) The list of celebrities can really go on and on So Kim Kardashian being credited for a wig should not surpirise you. Its what the media does to celebrities. Who else are they going to praise? Louis XIV (because that's the first person to wear a lace front.

@@britttanyroseyou have the numbers backwards I also had an issue with in your video, you said 90% of black people have an issue with cultural appropriation and only 10% don’t. I think that Black people who are anti black are often that way because they are not educated about our culture, what we stand for, our accomplishments and/or our history. Because when you know what it means to be a black person you will have more appreciation for it and for yourself as a black person. If you hold no value for yourself as a black person, it is unlikely that you will even try to protect the value of other blacks and their culture. I know because for a time I used to be the same way, I wasn't necessarily anti black- I just couldn't /didn't want to understand why black people felt a certain way about certain things. I often assumed they were being dramatic because I am a black person living in a black country so I don't necessarily face any discrimination for being black, so I stubbornly believed they were making a big deal out of it. It's disgusting really. In short, learn to love your culture and yourself. Trust me you will be happier.
Being a black woman who was not born in the USA, I will admit that I didn’t give much thought to white women wearing our cultural braids. That’s because I come from a country where Asian culture, Indian culture, and African cultures have integrated well. However, having lived in the USA for a few years now, I understand your point of view and I completely agree with it. The racism in this country is so rampant and still very relevant in a way that it isn’t in other countries. Oftentimes in the US, appropriation isn’t appreciation; people do it to be in your face. I agree that if some black people (EVEN IF IT WERE THE MINORITY) have an issue with it, then you shouldn’t wear it. Moreover, the nonblack person shouldn’t even want to wear it at the risk of offending. The problem is that they don’t care. Black women in the US have been discriminated against for their hair. Laws had to be passed to protect us from discrimination. That may be an uncomfortable truth for some, but ultimately… as a person who wasn’t raised here BUT can understand, I’m imploring people who can’t see her perspective to ask themselves why. Why is it that you want to wear black braids so badly at the risk of offending some black women? Is it that you do not care? If you do not care, then… why? If you have an issue with black women wanting credit for the things that they’ve created, then why?

WELL DOCUMENTED that MANY Black women have a issue with it, FACTS. I’ve worn braids and had someone tell me I had a “bo derek” hair style… um no ma’am. And that’s a VERY old reference too.. you know how far back you gotta reach?? 😭
Who said blacks had the monopoly on braids? Were you there when the very first braid was done and made sure it was done by a black man or woman and then followed that to other parts of the world that took the style and copied it? You don’t speak for me, I’m not sitting around worrying about somebody’s hair, how they wear it because it doesn’t move me.
Speaking specifically on your views towards the mixed persons experience, we can not pick and choose when we want to be black unless you are “passable”. She is not so no matter how many times she wants to fit in with the white people around her, they will always see her as black. On my personal experience as a mixed person, I don’t belong anywhere. I’m mixed with white, Mexican, and black I’ve never been able to fit in with either group. My mom’s white father and her Mexican grandfather both said we weren’t their grandchildren and my dad’s black mom always had something to say about us being mixed and hating my mom. I just feel like people need to stop saying other people have it easier when they never experienced the other person’s life. At least you have a community that accepts you. Edit: I’m not speaking against your views on cultural appropriation, I actually agree with them wholeheartedly. I was even getting frustrated with the mixed girls comments myself. She’s not making these comments because she is mixed, she is just using that she’s mixed as an excuse to be able to speak for the black community even though she obviously already denounced her black heritage. That’s what “uncle Tom’s” do. The only thing that she doesn’t get is that just because you turn your back on one side of yourself doesn’t mean the other side will accept you.
@@yoginella No. Not well said! She just stated, that she doesn't belong to any culture, which is just not true. @Chelle89 You could belong to any culture you want, if you wouldn't live in America. In every other Country, people feel honored, if you replicate their hairstyles or accessories and clothes and they would welcome you with open arms. Believe me, in other places you would feel, like you belong. In Africa for instance, they love it, when people braid their hair and wear cultural clothing. It is just African-Americans that want to find a problem with that.
@@LadyMeikoDubs You can't just say "no" to their personal experience. My experience is similar and I have lived in Europe since birth as the child of an African. If people in Africa treat other people with more respect, tolerance and acceptance than in far too many other countries in the world, great! But unfortunately, immigrant people who do not conform to the local "norm" are very often treated like "aliens" their whole lives, regardless of how long they have lived in their new home.
@@yoginella I didn't mean to say, that she does not feel that way. I'm just saying, that it is not true, that she doesn't belong anywhere. She is a child of earth, just like everyone else and not everyone treats people differently just because of their Skin-Color.
Sorry to burst your bubble African Americans ,the girl was right and you don't really own anything .Especially as people who are so far from their real culture. You were wrong in this one love ,you are not the victim and no one forced you on that show . You need to stop getting triggered by every little thing trying to hold on to bits and bits that don't even come from you.
Or… you could respect the boundaries of a culture and stop feeling so entitled that you think it’s ok to tell people they don’t own anything so you can have access. Embarrassed
Because she is also a human being with experiences, such as people wanting to touch her hair and her thinking that was racist. Everyone has experiences.
This is such a shame. According to your logic, should white women be offended by black women culturally appropriating their straight hair by wearing wigs or getting relaxers? It’s also disturbing to see how can you start your video with Matthew 6:33? Like the Bible says, out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks (Matthew 12:34, 35). If you have Jesus in your heart you would not be overcome and focusing on issues that do not draw you or your listeners closer to Christ, but what you are doing is causing more division and strife. “And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth…” Acts 17:26 KJV “And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:31 KJV We need to develop a kingdom of heaven culture not black culture, not white culture, not Asian culture, not Hispanic culture, not human culture. As children of God, we are not of this world. And all these issues are devices of the devil to distract us from focusing on real issues like repentance, like developing a personal relationship with Jesus, like getting prepared for His soon coming. Having a spirit of separation and segregation and racism will not help you get you into heaven. Jesus is coming for a people who have His character. “Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?” Matthew 5:43-46 KJV

Cultural appropriations is real. Being African and from the baSotho and Zulu tribe. I get what u saying. In both my cultures u wear certain things for different reasons. Then u come wear it for fun. Noooo mam/sir. Leav it alone.
Full disclosure, I am a black woman. Black women wear hairstyles that are culturally associated with white women all the time, like straight either wigs or relaxers. So I don’t mind that white women are wearing black culture hairstyles. What I do mind are uneducated ppl thinking that those white women created those hairstyles thus making them popular. Those ppl need to be educated about black women hairstyle. We need evolve as a society. We all need to learn from another.
Straight hair isn't culture appropriation. Straight hair is a genetic thing people are born with. My grandmother is fully black and her hair is straight so what you said in the beginning doesn't make any sense. You can culture appropriate something you were born with.
It’s so frustrating and disrespectful when some black people are ignorant of what is clearly an issue. This is not just an American issue, it’s everywhere and thank you for speaking on this. I am a woman of African heritage, I live in the UK and love my braids especially in summer. I was having a bad hair day one day and went to work wearing a wig. To my horror, an English colleague in the admin team said she preferred my hair this way- me wearing the wig. She thought I had straightened my hair all out and even clarified that she was passing a compliment when I pulled her up on it. After this, I made sure I gave her some cultural education on the inappropriateness of her unsolicited compliment. Her comment made me very uncomfortable around her from that day, and seeing this video, I now wonder what she would’ve said to Kardashian’s braids. Discrimination still exists in 2022. You can’t even embrace your own culture without someone intentionally or unintentionally making comments that could make you feel ashamed about your heritage. I eventually left the employment but made sure a day didn’t go by without wearing my neatly done braids to prove a point to her.
Me as a white female never liked the other girls and I always felt like she was anti black but against I’m not black so it’s not my part to decide if she is or not. It is nice to know that I’m not the only one that she’s it that way. Yes I love and admire black culture but I know I can’t do it not throwing a fit about.
Ok, so...here goes. I left a few comments at the start of the video, mostly asking if black people shouldnt wear french braids, etc. I was pretty defensive. Now I'm feeling really stupid because now I totally see your point. I learned a valuable lesson about listening, and I want to apologize (I'm a white person, btw.) I didn't understand because I wasnt listening.
I want to start this comment off by saying in a 16 year old mixed girl, I'm mixed with African American and hispanic and I know cultural appropriation is a very real thing and Ive experienced a lot of it considering I grew up in a high property black neighborhood and recently was excepted into a predominantly white school. Also you stated so many good points., and I hate how Dr. Phill continued to cut off the people who were on the side that believed cultural approbation was wrong but listen to the people who didn't think it was wrong. And the girl who was going back and forth with you is extremely anti black in a lot of her videos and talks with a lot of white people to discuss black issues, her channel is idiotic and because she was raised by a white women in a white neighborhood she's developed these wrongful idolizes. Also while watching this I had two thoughts, one I didn't like how when he " did his research "but he only researched ways to support the other side that believed cultural appropriation isn't a big deal, and I think he did it because the issues that were talked about doesn't affect him in any way. And lastly how he only supported one side the entire video. Also I would just like to say that if I was on that show I would literally tear the other side and Dr. Phill into shreds.
Thank God for our gifted and black young men and women who are showing us such growth. Knowing that these topics have to be discussed and knowledge about these issues integrated into our society.

Definitely! I'm mixed (black/white) and I've seen news story on how some black men and women are fired for wearing certain protective styles or told they need to cut/take down the styles to keep their jobs, black girls being bullied for having afros at school, punished at school for wearing braids, and I've even seen some black/ biracial girls who are half black get their hair CUT AT SCHOOL by white kids and teachers. Me personally I first learned about hair discrimination from my dad (who is white) because he once told me I shouldn't wear braids cuz my hair looks better out and I may not be able to get jobs and things like that (he also said his black god daughter has gotten bullied and things like that around her hair and he didn't want the same to happen to me) and it's so frustrating when even some non American black/ mixed people try to gaslight the community making it seem like these things don't happen when they do and have for generations now. Just shows which side of her family she gets her views from....
I’m a white woman, 60 years of age who met her best friend in grade school who happened to be of color, our status has not changed. All of the women in my family had/have long hair down to the back of their knees, I don’t know why or when it started but I guess it’s our family thing. To anyone who has that length of hair knows what a hassle it can be at times. Around 5th grade my bestie and her mom took to me to a salon at the beginning of summer break and per their suggestion I had my hair braided into corn rows, I kept those braids in all summer (3 months) long. It had absolutely nothing to do with race, it just gave me break from dealing with long hair for the summer and it was freeing. I had my hair braided every summer for year to come even into adulthood. Different times I guess but nobody seemed to have any issues with it back then. We had more negative remarks out in public for being obvious best friends, there were some ppl who just didn’t like it and on occasion became threatening towards us but we learned to ignore it. I’m not going to claim that I fully understand bc hair braids or plats have been around in many cultures for centuries, not exclusively to any particular race but I don’t get my hair braided anymore bc I don’t want anyone to feel disrespected and I never know who’s going to take that point of view so it’s best I don’t do it anymore, even if my soul reason was for comfort.
You shouldn’t stop. I’m not going to stop. I get my hair done when I take my son to get his hair braided. I live in Florida and I have thick long hair. I NEED my hair braided lmao bc if I have a knot in my hair it takes 30 minutes to brush it out no joke. Don’t stop doing something you like
So did you watch the video and gain any understanding on this issue or does your childhood experience negate the experiences and point of views expressed? Your 60, so your old enough to remember “ Bo Derek braids” it was an issue then just as much as “Kim K braids” is an issue now…. Since you pretend to not understand & your here commenting on this video, give a 3 min listen starting at about 36 min. This should sum up what seemed to have overlooked over the past 60 yrs simply because you & your friend wore braids as children.
With your mentality, should Starbucks credit the inventor of coffee? If I created a new chocolate brand, do I need to credit the Aztecs? Do all Westeners must credit the Asians because salt and mostly all spices originated from Asia? Even that English doctor wears a Tuxedo, which is not originally from his race. People are now sensitive, like these common attires/hairstyles, even foods still need a credit like they have royalties on them. IT IS respectful to use/wear/eat things from other cultures, since they're getting more recognized. You pretty much shown that some Black people are now overusing their freedom, which made other races isolated.
“Black people are overusing their freedom” I just know you’re anti black and you don’t even know it, nor do you understand the history of black exploitation and appropriation in America

You handled yourself very well. I work at a large civil rights law firm with a lot of white people, as well as other races. Let me just keep it cute by saying, Brittany you've spoken nothing but FA FA FACTS‼️👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾
Double standards, when us black people wear wigs that has hair belonging to other races( whites, etc) it is cute but God forbid a white person wears braids for all to start kicking and screaming🙄. The Nambians came up with the box braids and they ain't bothered. Y'all need to chill and not be so offended by everything.
I saw a Chinese woman claim she would love seeing black women wear Cheongsams. Something tells me that would cause uproar. Things mean stuff. And i think it's disingenuous to sit here and pretend it doesn't.
Some people are just way too sensitive over people adopting styles of other cultures in a complimentary manner where they're just appreciating the creations of other cultures and enjoying it where there are very very few examples of others "taking credit" for.the creations of others examples", at least not enough to think of it as a larger societal provlem. I believe the sharing of culture is a step forward in equality where credit is still given where it is due but we can still share what we all appreciate. The argument against this is more of a step back where unreasonable barriers are formed out of the woke taking of offense fron people who are overly sensitive to no one meaning any harm or offense. It's as if some people these days are unconsciously looking for reasons they can piece together to be offended by something that brings no negative impact unless you are purposefully looking for it or at least creating it within yourself through a victimized mindset, thinking everything you see relating to but not within your culture is against you. Can't we all just celebrate our differences in a way we can still share them for everyone's enjoyment and appreciation? I'd say it's an essential in true equality and untiy as humans.
( don't judge my typos and minor errors I wrote this up kind of fast, still with deep thought, and didn't read it through enough times to edit all the grammatical mistakes)
Yeah well it's all good until she it reminded that she is a black woman in America. Just like this chick I work with she's skin toned like Mariah and omg I can't believe they are treating me like this. Now she's frustrated and mad at me for not helping her be the angry black woman. No, 🤗 welcome to our side it's not my fight and I've suggested the appropriate ways to deal with it, not walking around being angry at the world because it's not going to solve the problem. I live this life and had to learn along the way, it looks like you are just now being treated for the first time and placed in the black culture and you can't handle it. So this chick on here wait she'll get hers in due time because what she fails to realize is they still see her as a black woman when it really comes down to it.
Great job Brittany. This is a topic that keeps popping up to me. Thank you for the knowledge you share, it helped my understanding. I feel like I can have a conversation about it now. Even though I feel like Dr Phil was the wrong platform for the topic of race appropriation and it was clearly a one sided discussion, you and the gentleman and the young lady on both sides of you held up the banner. Funny, I was just looking for some hair growth tips. I got so much more. Thanks again!🙏🏽
I’ve had horrific things said to me based on race as a white person, such as all white people should die, is that oppression? What about people turning down white people for DEI? Is that oppression?
So I completely understand your point of view. Ppl should definitely give credit where credit is due. However, that is a society issue. What I mean is that if society sees Kim and says that’s so cool but is not familiar with the culture bit originated from that’s a lack of exposure to the black community. Here we can say, well maybe it would be good for her to highlight that so that people are more familiar and at the same time educate people. Understand that things are very different in the states (I live in Europe), but when my African friends see someone with braids in, they absolutely love it. Everyone knows it comes from black culture and it is appreciated. What I am trying to say is I understand both sides, but gatekeeping isn’t going to help educate people.
I am so proud of you girl that there is someone out there speaking on it. Again, Black people create something, the take and say they create it. Also, back in the 80's a woman was fired for wearing black braids when they first came out; she sued them for firing her, then the she and the company went on this I talk I can't remember show. Now white women want to where cultural braids. Not Viking or swedish styles. Research it. There is a produce out there for Mixed Chicks.
@@smokedout5215Right? Those braids originate from South Africa and has been part of their culture for so long(since b.c)so I don’t understand why black Americans are claiming it. Babe Girl, when you go on shows like this it is normally always biased before you even go on the show. If it was not an issue, then they would not have had to pass that "Crown Act" in regards to women of color being fired for their hair. it’s the fact that black people were teased for the colour of their skin, their lips, their body. back when I was in school, I was teased for my lips because they weren’t normal they were ‘big’ or were similar to ‘duck lips’. but today other races are tanning their skin to look darker, getting lip and butt injections. and getting braids. I was called medusa in school because of my long black braids.

The opposing side really came with the smoke. I wouldn’t be surprised if producers gave them a heads up about the fact that they would be debating.
Obviously….they all knew they were going to debate on their individual views.
She isn't black she's mixed that's why she doesn't feel the same. Stop calling half white people BLACK.

Dr. PHIL was out of pocket to ask him 'are those really on the same level? Really! Yea a black man with Locs would be profiled WAY quicker than a white man with Locs. This isn't hard to UNDERSTAND!
Idk about this cuz white boys with locs are repulsive
Actually it isn't. I wouldn't expect him to really understand it from his angle. And that's the thing. Gotta stop trying to explain everything to someone how its this and/or that. Some things people have to actually be in to know and understand. They have to have it happen to them to know so its best to find something that is general across the board for every person so that way they can know what you mean or just not even further the conversation with them.
The messed up thing is that they're both profiled anyways. A black man with locs is considered a "drug dealer" or some dumb shiiit. And a white man with locs is a considered a "stoner or dumb." Its ridiculous.

@@twinkleeyes8176you can't tell us not to wear our culture. Just stfu
Are you a decedent of a slave?
Exactly, and I’m an independent Black lady! Do you!!

@@Jess-hf9meThat is a long explanation to defend double standards. It seems you're making it more of a skin color issue than a cultural appropriations issue. But as a Haitian who grew up in America I understand why it’s important to gatekeep such a profound word within the community, black people around the world don’t have the same mindset we do hence why that woman in the audience said the boundaries don’t seem so rigid

Side Note: Kim K is wearing a basic wig and yet the court of public opinion gives her credit for “creating this amazing look”.
The fact remains that black women and white women are treated differently for the exact same hairstyle wig etc especially in a professional capacity.
The same hairstyle Kim K is wearing and being praised for can get a black woman fired and/or overlooked for opportunities
Make it make sense.
Beyonce is credited for "lemonade braids" (BTW all these credits are non official it's just media and fans who credit this stuff) The list of celebrities can really go on and on

I don’t think I’m the one that needs to rewatch the video😂

You have a very surface-level way of thinking if you can't comprehend what this smart young lady is addressing. That is a you problem unfortunately
Well said👏👏👏
*The grass Isn’t always greener on the other side👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽💥Coons like Amala will never learn*

Because she is also a human being with experiences, such as people wanting to touch her hair and her thinking that was racist. Everyone has experiences.
She is biracial tho and it’s just her opinion
This is such a shame. According to your logic, should white women be offended by black women culturally appropriating their straight hair by wearing wigs or getting relaxers?
It’s also disturbing to see how can you start your video with Matthew 6:33? Like the Bible says, out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks (Matthew 12:34, 35). If you have Jesus in your heart you would not be overcome and focusing on issues that do not draw you or your listeners closer to Christ, but what you are doing is causing more division and strife.
“And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth…” Acts 17:26 KJV
“And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:31 KJV
We need to develop a kingdom of heaven culture not black culture, not white culture, not Asian culture, not Hispanic culture, not human culture.
For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?”
Matthew 5:43-46 KJV
I got so mad when they just let the opposite side talk and the professor got cut off so quick🤦🏽♀️

So anyone can texture their hair in braids!

THERE WAS A TIME ESPECIALLY IN LOUISIANA WHEN BLACK WOMEN WERE NOT ALLOWED TO WEAR THEIR HAIR OUT THEY HAD TO WRAP IT UP........
That's crazy u would be able to wear what u want
You shouldn’t stop. I’m not going to stop. I get my hair done when I take my son to get his hair braided. I live in Florida and I have thick long hair. I NEED my hair braided lmao bc if I have a knot in my hair it takes 30 minutes to brush it out no joke. Don’t stop doing something you like
There's no reason to stop, you like it, your feelings matter too.
Balony, I never believed that narrative. To much delusions.

Something that bothers me about this topic, no other culture is expected to share their culture.. only black culture.

I live this life and had to learn along the way, it looks like you are just now being treated for the first time and placed in the black culture and you can't handle it. So this chick on here wait she'll get hers in due time because what she fails to realize is they still see her as a black woman when it really comes down to it.

Funny, I was just looking for some hair growth tips. I got so much more. Thanks again!🙏🏽
I wish they would stop saying we are oppressed.
Right like if they were really impressed they couldn’t handle it😂
I’ve had horrific things said to me based on race as a white person, such as all white people should die, is that oppression?
