  • Robert Waldinger, a psychiatrist and professor at Harvard Medical School, leads the Harvard Study of Adult Development, the longest study of adult life ever conducted. Over 85 years, the study has focused on relationships and their impact on happiness and health. Waldinger emphasizes that close relationships with family, intimate partners, and close friends are crucial for well-being, but even casual interactions, like chatting with a grocery store cashier or a barista, contribute to a sense of belonging and well-being. Research, including a study in Chicago involving commuters, indicates that connecting with strangers can significantly boost happiness, highlighting the energizing and mood-lifting effects of human connection, even with unfamiliar individuals.
