Shot list:
1-6.) Accidents, spins and slide-offs caught on video on the I-55 northbound offramp at Reavis Barracks Road in the Mehlville neighborhood, south of downtown.
7.) Tractor-trailer can't stop on the icy ramp and blows through a red light, honking
8.) Car slowly sides toward the guardrail
9.) MODOT plow truck slides down the ramp, wheels locked
10-16.) More cars sliding and locking wheels on the ramp
17, 18.) More plow trucks sliding on the ramp
19-23.) Accident aftermath on the Illinois side of the metro on I-64. A westbound tractor-trailer crashed through the guardrail and ended up on the bridge embankment.
If you see a guy with a camera just before a turn or hill and its snowing out, just stop and turn around.
this
I did.
Nah they want their 15 minutes of shame
Props to the dude in the dodge who pumped his anchors rather than just stand on them and have no control at all.
Big_Adam_2050 thanks that was me
**Insert Speed Racer shouting**
Digby Dooright yes sir , thanks
Ever heard about ABS? rofl
yeah that was cool, and the GMC driver as well
1:18 very smart on the trucker to sound the horn because he couldn’t stop, better to let people know your coming than to take there life. Much respect 💯
He did the right thing. If he had slammed on the brakes, the truck could have jackknifed, putting the drivers on the shoulder in grave danger. If I was a cop, I'd get on my speaker and tell him: "Don't even TRY to tap the brakes, pal! You'll just make it worse."
3:08 i like how he drops the plow to stop
"I think I'll just stay here in the ditch until this melts off..."
Better place for some
Kudos to the truck driver!
Dude in the grey Ram knows how to drive
PatientMental, A professional in action.
I said the exact same thing
But he doesn't because he lost control because he was going too fast.
Yeah, until a car side swipes him... I think most people chose safety over their car.
failtolawl but he couldn’t slow it’s too icy
That one guy just gave up and left their car there 😅
Kujamon His* car.
@@jumpinjojo Their can be used in a singular way.
Walked to the bar
it was a chevy mailbu!!! lmaoo
@@andrewmorgan7500 hold my car gonna go get a beer.
Good thing there wasn’t on coming cars when that 18 wheeler was honking... would of been a major disaster 😱... yikes !
OMG you're not kidding!
That was a good move on his part! Icy hill and can't stop, he had to do what he had to do to get across without touching those brakes!
@Jack McAvoy smart by honking the horn too to let anyone who might be approaching the intersection that he can't stop
@Jack McAvoyyou can tell he hit his back trailer brakes a bit though. But that may of just been when he was testing the conditions.
95thousandroses he initially tried to slow down and saw his abs wasn’t letting him brake so he knew he was on ice and had to ride it thru.
I was literally in the middle of searching for your channel when I got the notification for your video. Everytime I get back from salting, your videos are the first ones I look up.
Might have been the angle but I didn't see one plow lay any salt on that ramp.
I think in this situation, sand would have been more appropriate. (We don't use salt in Montana. We use sand. The colder it gets, the less effective salt is. Sand, on the other hand, is effective no matter what the temperature is.)
www.clickondetroit.com/weather-center/science/when-does-salt-work-and-when-does-it-not
Salt is entirely appropriate for this. It was freezing rain, not really that cold at all. In any case, if you don't put ANYTHING down, NOTHING gets better.
By the looks of it the plows had salt loaded up. No reason why they shouldn’t have spread it out. If those plows were out if salt they could have called for another plow to treat the roads.
Truck at 3:20 is applying salt, hard to see with glare but its happening. And the reason you see several go by not spreading is they are empty, this ramp is access to a MODOT yard.
Yeah that was my thought too?? Why weren't they dumping the salt out???
Your coverage is second to none! Thank you for what you do!
Danny Cal more catfish vids bro
That intersection looks like Reavis Barracks at 55. Thank you for posting.
These comments hurt my brain, props to Dan for putting up with comments. Weather isn't random....we know about it ahead of time. Almost every driver was going too fast. Another example of people saying you should have helped but they too would have been posting to social media saying OMG THIS IS CRAZY!!!!! end rant/
Bert Longbottom Weather is actually pretty random in Missouri. Add that in with the weather forecasters are clueless, you get a bunch of people that don’t know what’ll even happen.
Love my winter tires. Drive the same reduced speed as you would if you had all season tires in these conditions and you are golden. Love the extra protection!
OK, so the usual gaggle shouting the brainless "why didn't you warn anyone" has arrived. This is a completely unreasonable criticism by those who aren't thinking for one minute about what they're expecting me to do. Let's go through several facts about this event:
1.) A Winter Weather Advisory was issued by the National Weather Service for freezing rain and icy roads the night before. This was covered by the media and was in the social media feeds of anyone who follows local news. Every single person on the roads had to walk across an icy sidewalk and driveway, then scrape ice off of their cars that morning to even begin to drive.
2.) The entire region's roads were iced over. It was not just this spot. See: www.riverfronttimes.com/newsblog/2019/02/10/these-videos-show-just-how-crazy-the-ice-was-in-st-louis-today The mainline interstate was also very icy, and I witnessed three accidents there just at that one location. There were accidents happening every half mile. There was no place you could have stood to "warn" people that wasn't also icy, with the extreme risk of actually *causing* an accident (and getting hit) if drivers braked after seeing you - that is, in the unlikely event they *did* see you at all.
3.) As you can see in the video, *three* MODOT plows went down the ramp. They were well aware of the conditions, as were law enforcement and first responders.
4.) I *have* tried warning drivers on site before, and here's what I learned: no one sees you and reacts unless you step into the road in front of them. Then, they slam on their brakes. That's a good way to get yourself killed, and even suggesting that it should be done is going to get people hurt or killed. You think my life is worth risking to prevent ANY of the things that happened in the video? Police have told me not to do this. Are you still not convinced? Contact any police officer, emergency responder, highway patrol worker and tell them what you're telling me. They'll say you're insane for even thinking it. Seriously, find me an official who says anything different and get back to me. I'll go on a live stream, right here on this channel, in front of the world, and talk to them about it. I'll be waiting. Just think about all of this for one second. Police and fire vehicles are often hit by out-of-control drivers. And these are large vehicles with bright flashing lights! You think that a person standing there is going to somehow do a better job?
5.) Here's the Google Maps of this location: www.google.com/maps/place/Mehlville,+MO/@38.5315334,-90.3107945,18.25z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x87d8c814648c6c1d:0x8ece5508d3bed29a!8m2!3d38.5083865!4d-90.3228941 Tell me where you would have put up your signs or where you would have stood to try and warn anyone about this ramp.
I've spent 10 years running the icyroadsafety.com web site to try and educate and warn drivers *ahead of time*. It's simply amazing to see how so many expect me to do something as stupid as stand along an icy highway in a futile attempt to stop a couple of fender-benders.
Still not convinced after all of that? Let's hear about your experience warning drivers along an icy road. Obviously, since you think this is effective and "the right thing to do", you *must* do this in your neighborhood every time it snows or gets icy, right? No? Why not? Turn your criticisms around to get an idea of how incredibly presumptuous and unreasonable they sound. If that's not enough, contact your local police, fire, EMS or highway patrol official so you can hear it from them, if that's what it takes.
I like how you have this prepared because those thoughts have crossed my mind previously but this really does a good job of explaining it.
Everyone's a critic Dan... it was educational and entertaining😁 thumbs up
I thout it was funny watching the cars sliding and its good that you didnt try to tell the drivers cause it makes the video more better.
You care. Definitely care. I suggest you find a hobby.
I liked how you formed this educational comment. I hate to read comments like why "didn't you warn them". I don't think anyone has EVER advised doing something like this because it causes more harm than good. Not to mention it's not common sense at all. If the goal is to help someone from getting hurt out on these streets, standing there in the middle of a road yelling out so called warnings isn't the resolution!
Why are these videos so addictive?
I'm glad we haven't had a lot of ice on the roads in New England so far this season. Thanks for the video.
I love this channel keep posting!!
The scary part is that you don’t realize it until it’s too late
Thank you. Helped to decide out or not
that toyota handled it like a pro
You know all the good spots Dan.
Was this intersection in your video a few years ago?
So whether or not it is their job, why didn't ANY of those salt trucks salt the exit ramp?
they probabaly were, but rain would wash the salt off then it would re freeze
Because they were empty. Headed back to reload.
Freeman Thurston exactly this ramp is access to a DOT yard, and if you look at 3:20 you will notice the truck is spreading, just not at a heavy application rate.
If you want to pay $1,000's of your own money and not get paid, then go ahead.
@@thealmosthdchannel It didn't rain that much.
Clever of the semi, prevented major catastrophe by just running it, and alerting those around he was.
Dan..you have't made any video from Seattle .crazy snow storms since the 1950'S...nice job
Well done to the truck driver who went straight and pamped his or her horn rather than skid wildly.
I'm curious how do you know where an intersection like this is? Scanner?
The Mazda 5 had the ESP trying to compensate the understeering (rear right tire barely locking) but it didnt work out
Idiots who slam the brakes on everyone knows you aren't supposed to do that
Skillful driving by the dodge ram around 2:20
Thanks I have skills
Greater Vancouver Dashcam true! I thought that was going to turn out badly.
He was going way too fast also, and lucky the other road wasn't busy.
Greatly entertained by the number of plow trucks that drove by and didn't spread sand or salt
People don’t understand that pushing on the brakes is what makes you slide, just continue at your pace, and if you slide apply GAS not brake to correct yourself.
Chase Camargo This is true I’m 24 and this technique makes me drive better than everyone
Black ice? You mean drift lube
Only in a FWD car. If you apply throttle in a RWD car you'll just make it worse. You are right in saying that people should lay off the binders, though.
can we please talk about what @Andrew Jimenez commented above ?
@@DarkIzo Yes I think what Andrew is saying is that if you hit the gas on black ice you'll be a better driver or something like that.
2:08 thank you ❗️u guys need to pump your breaks 🤦🏽♂️
Never pump your brakes in a vehicle with ABS braking. You can ruin it. A basic car without ABS yes you can pump brakes
lol what terrible advice
nathanwoodall1 lmfao
You absolutely should not pump the brake pedal in a car with ABS. ... In a car with ABS the wheels should never lock in the first place, so pumping the brakes will just make you take longer to stop. In an emergency stop in a car with ABS, you should apply the brake pedal firmly and hold it while the ABS does all the work.
I love the 18-wheeler when they start honking
What camera is this?
this is actually a really good way to show how to turn into a slide
Are the plow/sand trucks just out for a Sunday drive? Not one was spreading.
Wow, actually some display of driving skill here!!
I guess that big rig changed his mind and decided to go back onto the highway. (In case you haven't figure it out that was a sarcastic statement for those who takes life too seriously.)
Nice drifting! I knew it would catch on in the US after Tokyo Drift!
Yes some of it could be just the black ice on the road I've had that happened to me in the past but I'm not zipping along at 35 miles an hour I'm like almost to a crawl maybe five miles an hour and most of the time it doesn't happen to me but there are other times where I have spun out people need to slow down glad no one was hurt.
Modot doing another great job.
One thing I didn't understand is why the MODOT trucks didn't put any salt down!
Hey do you have a twitter?
3:32 - well that escalated quickly.
You know if I was getting a pizza to delivery for me I wouldn't get it to me they would just drive right in to my house Lol
Appreciate how you dont have any stupid music over your videos, always better having nothing
One of many reasons why I shall never leave the safety of Florida winters.
what was the truck at 2:10 doing?
Where I live in Parauapebas- Pará Brazil when it is cold, it is scoring 77 ° F
^ ^
1:20 that semi driver was one lucky buckaroo...nobody was passing thru the intersection
Had my first ever car accident November 2018. Totaled my 97 grand marquises. Such a shame. Clipped a tree. Tree was ripped to shreds. Thankfully I walked away an my son wasn’t with me.
answer me this why would a salt plow truck slide down a road without spinning salt out from the video had almost a 3/4 of a full load
It is 100% about Money.every state/agency/county employee milks that job out as long as possible.
If you'll notice there were three MODOT trucks. Two weren't applying any salt however, the third one was. Why ? Because the trucks were empty. This ramp is one that heads into a MODOT yard. The other trucks were returning from running their routes. They needed to reload.
When you ever slide on snow or ice NEVER SLAM ON THE BREAKS instead I just change into neutral and just take control of the wheel and just try to gain back traction or going straight works all the time for me
BINGO! Neutral and "feather" the brakes, steer with skid direction. Good tires, going slow, or just avoiding travel during these conditions.
55 & Reavis.....that ramp always seemed short and steep to me, by suburban standards anyway. And people just barrel on down it night and day. When I was in high school, I had just turned East on Reavis in the rain, when a truck came charging down the ramp and pushed two left-turning cars into traffic. If it's anything worse than cloudy, I'll skip it and head to Bayless.
guess that SEMI load going to be a little late ...
And expensive
He couldn't brake or his truck would've flipped
@@MJT-DA His truck wouldn't of flipped. He would of experienced a Jack knife at those speeds
better the load is late, than splattered all over the road.
This is the Northbound I-55 off ramp on to bound Reavis Barracks.
Omg did the guy driving the semi that fell from the top of the road okay??
WOW!! crazy!!
Apart from staying at home for the duration of such event, I was interested to know how exactly driving should be done under zero-friction conditions, like 2:25
Studded tires for winter,my wife's 2 wheel drive rear wheel drive Cadillac wouldn't be able to get out of the driveway on new all season tires. I put a set of studded tires on it and now it sticks to the road better than my 4 by 4 dually
love the salt truck spreading ...no salt
Plus locking his brakes... what kinda dot driver is that???
Where I am we have state, county and local roads. Each have their own road crew. Perhaps the plow truck was on a road they don’t maintain.
2:10 I was hoping to see this- the only smart driver.
What intersection?
Most of the first ones were Interstate 55 Northbound exit ramp to Reavis Barracks Rd in South St. Louis County.
Please drive safely everyone
2:08 That guy have been on an icy road before.. 👍
👍👍👍
The real driving simulator
Any of those have rear brakes?
This people just don’t understand! NEVER STOMP ON YOUR BREAKS!
This is the content I was looking fof
Could someone tell me, WHY didn't the plow/sand trucks have their sanders on?
ABS? Almost no one seems to have it. Sooo strange!
Living in Colorado and Alaska the main thing I saw was people not turning into the slide. When coning down a ramp always downshift.
Never downshift under icy conditions.
The only one who honked while passing red light was the truck driver......the rest of them were praying.....
do those cars not have abs?
Coming from the east coast to Texas in my pickup and I slid off the road into the middle median. The backside of my truck was sticking onto the road partially and the front wheels were stuck in a drainage ditch for the bridge I had just crossed. A trooper came along and parked behind me with his lights on. He said he'd called for a wrecker, but they were all busy at that time. I couldn't sit in my truck comfortably with it being nose down, so the trooper let me sit in his back seat. This was back in 1976 when cops still had cushioned seats back there. I finally got warm and laid down to rest. He woke me around dawn when the wrecker showed up. Fifteen minutes and $50 dollars later I was thanking the trooper as I cranked my truck to leave. Luckily I was only running behind schedule and had no damage, except to my wallet!
more black ice videos!!
Now I live in Minnesota which is relatively not as bad as when I used to live on Oklahoma, where you would get black ice all the time. Never use the brakes on black ice. There should be need for it when you know that it’s black ice and you have to go really slow, also never go on slopes at all.
First vehicle is an AWD Subaru. Great leasson here...AWD/4WD is meaningless on ice. Slowing down way ahead of time, easing the brakes...that's the key.
I know I’m late but that wasn’t a Subaru nor was it an AWD car. It was a Mazda Protegé, which is only FWD. Your point still stands though - AWD/4WD means nothing if you slide.
I agree. the person who was recorded should had call the cops to tell them that ramp is full of ice and to close the ramp, before somebody get hurt.
Good reaction by the truck driver 👍
I find it funny that when the salt truck was sliding down the Hill he wasn't thrown out salt at all
We all gangsta till the cars start slidin
1:00 NEVER stop on ice, you loose all traction, and therefore all control
It’s amazing how bad some people are at driving
Truck at 2:07 knows how its done
I would say something about all of my inlaws from Mizzou that say they can drive on any thin ice deep snow..elc oh wait I did say it but only problem is our locals close everything if they think it might possibly snow a flurry or 2..too many sur happy people and they are afraid someone may wreck i guess..don't make any since here...and yeah I live in the south and love it otherwise we still support and help if someone does get in trouble friend or foe
Oh wow ur in the area we just moved to!
Coming from Minnesota, It looks like regular ice, not black ice. Soon we're going to have "Black ice" videos from Texas. Its so apparent there's ice that everyone is ignoring the clues. Clues being rain/snow and a wet glazed surface. I Don't think people really know what black ice is anymore, and whenever someone has a crash they always blame it on "Black ice" but don't realize they are driving too fast for the conditions. Also conditions appear to be right around 28-35 degrees in the video. too warm for black ice.
JDS John No, that’s definitely black ice. I live in Missouri, around this time the temperature was in the late teens, didn’t get above freezing. You can see the wet texture and how it doesn’t resemble what regular ice looks like. It’s definitely black ice.
That Mazdaspeed protege yes
The salt truck has an advantage in that he can put his plow down to dig in and help him stop.
If you ever find yourself sliding on ice, don't lock up your brakes. You may not be able to stop, but at least you'll be able to steer and possibly avoid hitting something.
I swear, people in freakin Missouri and south can’t drive in icy weather! Though yet again, no one truly can if it’s badly icy. It’s just that people up north from where I live are more used to having to drive slower and more carefully.
Does anyone know what temperature is has to be to get these conditions? I’m trying to warn a newer driver but they think they know it all. :)
32 degress Fahrenheit or below.
Well done of this man honking on his way down! 1:19
Probs!!!
Black ice is the worst. Having bead lock wheels/tires you can air down to a few pounds of air helps some.
I love when people hold down the brake when sliding. The worst thing you can do.
Why don't they use winter tyres ?
None of these cars have ABS?
