  • Wondering which perennials you should consider adding to your farm or garden this fall? Today, Lisa and Layne are joined by Dave Dowling of Ball Seed to discuss three perennials grown for cut-flower use that he recommends planting this autumn. They cover why each plant is worth growing, USDA hardiness zones, growing and spacing tips, favorite varieties, and more. Love it! I've been adding a few perennial phlox plants here and there, I sowed annual phlox this spring and loved them too 😊

    GREAT info on these! I didn't realize phlox could be cut back and then new flowers come again. Going to try that tomorrow! And we are in 8b and grow yarrow as a perennial. In fact it spreads and has to be contained a bit! Also thanks for the tip about when to harvest Yarrow. I picked it too early and when it wilted I was so disappointed. Now I know why!

    I always hear Lisa say you can slow down the video to be able to take in everything he says. Well today that was true for me!😂 When he talks about protection from winter sun in zone 8 in order to allow them to get the coolest possible temps, that was really interesting to me! I wonder if I could grow peonies in dry hot zone 9… could someone share their knowledge? ❤😅

    • @LayneAngelo
      @LayneAngelo 6 днів тому +1

      So true - glad you were able to slow things down for improved comprehension! 😊 Dave responded to another zone 9 question in the comments - you may want to take a look 👀 I would add to his comment regarding experimentation that some varieties of peonies have lower chill hour requirements than others. I would research to see which peonies do well for people growing in warmer regions (such as the south) and investigate if there are any varieties growers in your specific area have had success with. If you do find any varieties you would like to try, I would definitely start small in case the experiment is a flop! 🙃 Best of luck, and have a fantastic day! 💚🤗💚

      Sorry, but zone 9 is too warm for Phlox and Peonies. They need a cold winter dormant period. You can check and see if your local garden center is offering them. If they are available, try a couple plants, growing them in the coolest part of your property and see how they do. But don't get your hopes up.

      @@davedowling7492 Thank you, Dave! This is the first time I’m learning that some perennials need that cool period, otherwise, they’re grown as annuals like Lisa does! Many thanks for your time!

    I tried storing peonies in my fridge and when I pulled them out they turned brown within 2 days...

    • @davedowling7492
      @davedowling7492 8 днів тому +1

      Make sure they are completely dry before putting them in the cooler. Also, it's important to remember that a cooler isn't a magical box that makes flowers last forever. Just like produce in the refrigerator, the shelf/vase life after they come out of the cooler is reduced the longer the flowers stay in the cooler.

      @@davedowling7492 when you say completely dry... There's going to be moisture in the petals.. I picked them in the late morning and passed dew time, is that what you mean?
