    One of the amazing things about watching these humpback whales breaching in slow motion is seeing the amount of water displaced. You could surf on some of that.

      I used to enjoy throwing huge rocks into the lake when I was a boy (and still do) to see how big a splash they could make. But those splashes don't compare with the impact of a huge 40 ton whale (about the size of a school bus) crashing into the ocean after breaching from the depths below.

      It's a real spectacle of nature to see such a huge creature like the whale launching itself so far out of the water... especially those which completely breach the surface and for a moment appear to be flying.

    I’m not sure exactly but I saw a video of the humpback whales scooping large amounts of krill as they come up from underneath. So, I’m suspecting at many times they’re scooping up their dinner while they’re breaching, and the breaching is the result of all the power these beautiful creatures have.

    • @NaturesInvitation
      @NaturesInvitation  Рік тому +4

      Yes, baleen whales breaching (come out of the water) is common when they feed on krill and other small fish. It was so fascinating that I created a whole video on this. It's actually a short documentary with 40 plus facts (most of which I never knew before I did the research) about the humpback whale. It looks at things like whether they could swallow a human, kill an orca... etc. Here is it is: ua-cam.com/video/hq9SClMMF-w/v-deo.html

    Humpback whales are one of my favourite creatures. They way they can jump out of the water like this when they breach is the main reason why. Not a surprise I'm sure.

    • @NaturesInvitation

      The surprise is when you've been waiting in the whale watching boat to see some breaching whales and when you are about to give up, SPLASH! One jumps right out of the water beside you.

  • @MTWood

    Does anyone know if they do this for pure enjoyment, or is there some other instinctual reason for it? Beautiful majestic creatures. I cannot believe we hunted them to near extinction. Man is the most dangerous animal on earth. Period.

    • @NaturesInvitation
      @NaturesInvitation  Рік тому +3

      The humpback whale story of coming back from near extinction is a great example of how we can turn things around by taking more responsibility for how our actions affect the whole of nature. There's now around 100,000 humpbacks. And with so many whale watching tours happen to watch these whales breaching is testimony to that. As for why they do this, there are a number of theories from cleaning off parasites to communicating to each other or just because they can.

      My thoughts on why humpback whales breach is ... because it can!!! :)

    • @MTWood
      @MTWood Рік тому +3

      @@robatrhema Yep. Me too. They’re obviously intelligent enough to know that it’s causing “those other animals in the floating things” to get excited. If I were a whale, I’d definitely put on a show. However, knowing my personality, I’d want to stand out in some way. Maybe breach an raise a flap to my forehead in a salute, finished with a wink before descending back below. And, if the boat was small enough, maybe a few jumps over the humans… assuming there were cameras around to catch me in the act. 😉

      @NaturesInvitation  Рік тому +2

      Now that would be worth seeing. I don't think we have any footage yet of a humpback whale breaching over a kayak. Capturing kayakers in their mouths doesn't count.

    What's with the intense music? 😅

    • @NaturesInvitation
      @NaturesInvitation  2 місяці тому +1

      Good question. It can be a challenge to know if you should add music and if you do, what kind of music it should be. And while not everyone has the same taste in the music selections, most of the time it works.
      The reason was that while I have whale videos with no music and just the whale sounds ua-cam.com/video/zX2SF5Gzmhg/v-deo.html when it came to breaching or fluking whales, I wanted to draw some extra attention to the GIANT side of these gentle giants.
      A whale breach is epic. Seeing an animal as big as a school bus launch itself out of the water like this, can be, intense.... especially if your there. It's spectacular, insane, powerful, magnificent, dramatic... hence the music. I don't use this kind of music with the butterfly videos. Thanks again for your comment. I'm always learning. Maybe you'll some of the whale videos where its just them :)

      On the 4th of July, standing on the shore at Lincoln Park in West Seattle, just a bit south of Colman Pool, I was lucky enough to see a juvenile humpback breach less than a hundred feet away. I always hope I'll see a whale but I NEVER expect to see one so close when I'm standing on the beach.

      Hey thanks for your honest feedback on the music. The footage of these humpback whales jumping had no audio (didn't have the money to pay for that) so I wanted to support the epic visual of a breaching whale with some epic music. Appreciate that this will not always be everyone's cup of tea.
