  • E-Ink. It powers everything from the YotaPhone 2 to the Amazon Kindle. It's simultaneously one of the most understated and futuristic display technologies around. And it's being put to use in devices and venues you've never even thought of. But what exactly is E-Ink, and how does it work?
That's a question we had for the folks at E-Ink Corporation, the brains behind the world's leading electrophoretic ink technology, and they were more than happy to answer it. They invited us to tour their Innovation Center and Headquarters facility in Massachusetts to get a firsthand look at the technology behind E-Paper Displays, as well as some historical context and a few sneak previews of where E-Ink is headed next. Join us for this quick tour, and then visit E-Ink yourself for more: www.eink.com/in...

It's absolutely amazing reading on a kindle paper-white, been using it to read a lot of books since I bought it last year. It creates the same sensation of reading on a paper rather than painful restraints caused by an lcd screen over long period of time; simply amazing. However, I think, adding color is just a little useless if they don't improve their refresh rate; and those flashes, they should get rid of those. I would be a pain in the ass if yotaphone only use a current generation e ink display(or even colored e ink) as its main display instead of dual back-to-back displays with lcd, despite the extremely long battery life.

I’ve never understood why these haven’t been as big as LED-screened tablets/phones. I have a brain injury, and LED screens are horrible for my head. They basically strobe super fast. I wonder if something like this would be easier for those of us with sensitivity to ‘normal’ screens

    • @clonkex

Because they're extremely slow to refresh/update and have very limited colours and resolution. It's the slow refresh that really kills them for most devices. They're absolutely amazing for e-readers but not that useful for phones or laptops.
On a side note, it seems like maybe you've lost your persistence of vision, at least a bit. I'm sure it's not fun for you but it's very interesting as an outsider.

@@clonkex definitely hard, but if I learned one thing about technology, than it is that there is nearly nothing, which is impossible. It just needs some time. Especially the things I mentioned. There are tablets and phones out already with eink having decent coloring and quite good refreshrate (I think its about 15 - 20 hz). Onyx Boox Nova3 is a tablet having these features, while yes the colors arent compareable to lcd or oled and it also has noticeable bleeding at higher hz, but at the state of now it works and you can even watch videos with it.

Very interesting. It’s also not just the battery itself that does not drain quickly like on any other average device. What is noticeable is that there’s far less heat being produced. The batteries on an e-reader (like a kindle for example) charge a lot quicker than devices that give out a multicolor display. Of course, weight, screen size, and material are an important factor that make the device’s performance vary. I might not want to dig too deep into that field just to make this comment short, but it is noticeable if you have several devices to compare side by side.

I foresee a bright future for E-ink (pun genuinely not intended). Because I've seen the best in display tech, from lcd, to Plasma, to OLED. They're great.. But for reading, the brightness of these displays can quite tiring. I'm actually looking to get an E-ink device presently for this reason, to load my books onto to read without the brightness fatigue.

Yeah, that's what I am hoping for. But if they work on building up Pebble OS it would be great since it can work with both iOS and Andriod, heck why not add Windows as well.
