A Brief History of Wat Arun
Built in the reign of: King Taksin, renovated by King Rama II and Rama III
Year of construction: 17th century, with major renovations in the 19th century
Location: Bangkok, Thailand, on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River
Significance:
• One of Thailand's most iconic landmarks
• Known for its impressive central prang (spire) decorated with colorful porcelain and ceramic tiles
• Serves as a symbol of Thai culture and heritage
Brief history:
• A Buddhist temple has existed on the site of Wat Arun since at least the Ayutthaya period.
• King Taksin renovated the temple in the 18th century and renamed it Wat Chaeng, meaning "Temple of the Dawn."
• King Rama II and Rama III further embellished the temple, adding the prang and other structures.
• Wat Arun was heavily damaged during the reign of Rama IV, but was later restored.
Features:
• The central prang, which is 79 meters tall
• The ordination hall, which houses a large bronze Buddha image
• The viharn, which contains murals depicting the life of the Buddha
• The chedi, or stupas, which contain the ashes of members of the royal family
Awards:
• 1991: Wat Arun was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the "Historic Town of Ayutthaya and Associated Historic Towns."

• Wat Arun is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Bangkok.
