I live in the north and believe that the extra form board would be helpful. However if you don’t want to have that expense you could just cut your burlap to fit in the hives. Try it out and see what you like. Good luck with the winter season.😊
It’s nice to have the insulation all as one piece but you probably could have saved a lot of time and insulation doing the edges in strips. Time with your dad is priceless though! I think where you cut the insulation out would definitely benefit to having some added insulation above it to help compress the reflectix like you talked about and preventing cold air and condensation in the middle of the hive. I like to cut my reflectix so it aligns with the outside edge of the box so it could just be stuck in the lid if needed and acts sort of like a gasket. A partly screwed in screw in your screens wooden frame may help you pull those out if you need to replace fondant through the winter. Good improvement for your bees! Hopefully it’ll save you some long term costs in feeding. Thanks for sharing! I hope you are enjoying the holiday season.
Thanks Brian! Stay tuned for a future video as I did exactly what I was debating on doing. All the hives have a 1/2” tightly fit foam board on top. I wish I could attach a photo here but I can’t. Cheers to you and your family and Merry Christmas!!!
I use a similar setup. I think yours will work well. I leave the inner cover on and propalized on. Add a medium box with two 2-inch foam pieces in it. There is enough room for hive alive patty on top of the inner cover.

Is that dad or grandpa? Enjoy these times together, memories last a lifetime
That’s my dad. And I agree, I wouldn’t trade our time together for anything in the world!

That sounds like a great setup. I’m always looking for new ideas to improve my setup! Cheers!
Для чого вирізати чотирикутний отвір?
Хіба не економніше вирізати полоси і склеїти.
Yes, you are correct. But this method was quicker and didn’t require me to glue or piecemeal it together.
