oh no............they got you too T-T RIP sam yang noodle boy

Love you, but disappointed ngl 😂
Hello
Sam always talks like his parents are sleeping in the next room. Which honestly makes me feel like I'm at a sleepover with my bestie just chilling and drawing. 😂
Ahahaha yes
Fr I've fallen asleep watching him way too many times, he's so relaxing!
It's because he's sharing art magic secrets with us ;)
He should do an ASMR video while roasting or sth really
yesss
The cylinder method is actually really useful for perspective if keeping in mind the shape of a head. They teach you this in art school
Yeah, if you try it and it looks bad everytime you're probably just doing something wrong 💀 it's so much easier and looks so much better than when you use boxes
@@Oh...1tsSeven it doesn’t work for everyone, doing art is meant to be what works for you just cause it doesn’t work for him doesn’t mean it’s a generally bad method :)
@@dahliad1937 That's the point. It's doesn't work for everyone, that's why so many people are upset about him with the cylinder method, he tried it, it didn't work, and he proceeded to call it bad, saying it didn't work and that you should never use it because it's a bad method.
I realize, that what I said made it seem like it had to work for everyone. I meant that, it's a better method for a lot of styles, and is generally an easier way for newer artists when developing a style

they teach the cylinder method in art school and it is actually very helpful!
We've got 13 parts of tiktok art tips, but will we ever get to see sam rate pinterest art tips?? I need to know if they're trustworthy!
Are there art tips on pinterest????? HMMMMMMMM
@@samdoesarts the ones I usually trust from pinterest are the tumblr posts lol
AYO YOU'RE HERE TOO??? 🤩🤩
Im infecting the art community like a plague :D
@Olive No, most are not square, no way they are all from insta. I think tunblr and deviantart has quite some presence too. Plenty of Asian minitutorials, btw. (I can't recognise the writing).
"whats your career?"

I was noticing that as I practiced drawing faces (especially if not using a reference) they all ended up looking neutral in mood and each pretty similar to every other. So, I've started going through the TikTok Art tips video series, pausing at a random moment, and using Sam's face as a reference. I get delight, horror, frustration, revulsion, contemplation, surprise... a whole range of expressions!
I can draw my father as a portrait
Wanna see it again

That’s a good idea ngl

hi ;-;
14:30 I do agree on this one though! Maybe not drawing a full cylinder, but if you've got basic knowledge of head/face drawing, loosely starting with a half-cylinder can actually be really good. It gives the brain a much quicker idea of the perspective you're going for when it comes to drawing portraits/faces.
And like I said, as a beginner I can imagine using cylinders might not be better and the result might turn out weird if they stick too close to the cylinder shape itself. But with knowledge already, it's a good little trick/addition to quickly lay down a face in perspective. Just from my own experience though, might not be for everyone ofc.
These art tips were so not bad that Sam didn't have to bring the skull of his enemy
I used to name all of my layers and I've reduced the time it takes me to finish a piece significantly when I stopped. It also made me take things less seriously and allow me to retain a "flow" state while drawing a lot better so... if you're a person who tends to be very orderly (or you have OCD) - do NOT name your layers.
This may be a good tip for people who tend to be too messy, though. It really depends on the person.
Personally, mask layers, alpha lock layers, and clip layers help me identify which one is one. But if it gets too cluttered with one of the same layer type, I name them.
bruh if i did that i could never keep track and i wouldn't even know what to call any of them i'd just be like "uhhh. let's call this one nick"
@@mariastephens1827 I used to name the crap out of them like “skin base”, “skin shading”, “shirt base”, “shirt shading”, “eyeball”, “iris” etc.
It was all very informative, but it was a complete waste of time. Now I just group layers with clipping together and I name the group, but only of it’s a piece I’m working on for more than a single session.
I always name all my layer, but I have sort of an algorithm for it : Groups (Rough, Rough Lineart, Lineart, Colors), and then the layer is just the parts (Face, Coat, Shirt, Hand etc), I think its easier to name groups than each layer. Whenever I add in base layers, I tend to flatten them onto the actual layer or make a whole layer for shadows and lighting. I also like working in way less layers than my peers (I have seen people with 47 layers and I have like 6-7)
I do most of my work in one layer, especially if its a painting, so I don't really need naming layers
If the drawing is supposed to have lineart and stuff I make groups and sometimes name them instead, especially if I'll like animate the drawing or export it somewhere else
Then naming is essential
Sam is changing so much I'm worried about Kara Lmao
I'm excited to see brutal Kara
And kool-aid
What why??
Sam’s turning into Ethan becker
She's the next RAID campion
The thing about naming layers.
Sometimes when I do digital art I'll give my layers people names like Richard or Steve because I find it funny 😭
Also since this place is empty…for now I guess…I started a series…just…u know…just puttin about there
“ugh wheres that one line i need to erase? is it on layer Billy Bob Brown or Tyrone???” 💀💀💀
@@rankh_0 LMFAOOO 😭
i like to name my layers after my favourite nba players
@@lukeskywalker9016 that's glorious
3:20 "I love sketchbooks"
"I love refrigerators"
Same energy
I was thinking the same thing
Sam admitting that he doesn't name his layers:
Me, just starting digital art: wait, you can name layers??
Yeh 😙✌
just double click on the layer and u can name them! It was a good day when I learned it in Krita!
Unless you use too many layers and confuse what is what you can name them (or export it to a different program)
Or you can name groups instead, takes less time ✨
@@Fleerue And so the horizons of digital art broaden in my life... But seriously bestie this is so helpful thank you so much.
It's better to name a group and throw all the layers correlated to the topic in it. That way you aren't wasting time naming all the layers, but still have some organization.
4:50 I believe there is also a factor of how you normally draw and are comfortable drawing when it comes to this. Some artists (like myself) find it easier to use multiple layers, and that can keep things neat in its own way.
For me, I like having more layers since it makes it easier for me if I end up seeing a mistake or want to change the colors later, and I only need to change one or two layers instead of drawing it over again
the cylinder thing is actually useful for artists that keep trying to use the box head method, wish you explained why you don't like things fully and what to do instead instead of just bashing them and moving on
Why is there nO replys
Fr he's always so negative towards TikTok artists especially
agreed
@@pufferfishparty He already said why in another video
Maybe because it is satire, do you even see his vids?
Sam I love seeing you talk about these tips! Giving proper information is important to those who are learning. Also I am someone who names their layers, though I just give up halfway through on giving them proper names. They usually are named as ‘I don’t like color theory’ or something of that
I'm one of the artist who got their tips reviewed, and ngl it kinda hurts to see it dunked on when I learn that tip from an industry professional art tutor 😔 Maybe next time message artists if they want their stuff to be reviewed on such a big youtube channel? Not everyone appreciates the sudden shock of seeing their stuff exposed in front of a big audience without a prior warning 😔
Exactly, I saw one of these people who got their tip on TikTok talk about how it’s just not that great
honestly this video seems more like him just judging people to feel better. it's not helpful
@@bikub7640 agreed, and also to make himself feel superior and any of his viewers who don't do this feel a sense of pride and agreement, which makes them wanna watch him more.
Oh no i always wondered if artists take permission before putting these vids up but ig they don't
If u dont mind me asking which one were u?
Pinterest and tumblr are amazing for aesthetics and refrences.
Also I've never heard of people using boxes for drawing anything except fingers. I've always been told to use spheres or oval spheres. My mom love art stuff so she's always had input and tips for me.
14:47 HAHAHA those comments! I lost it at "I just draw it with no guidelines"
13:05
There's a technique with water color paining that u put the paper (thats ment for this) in water and let it soak for about 2 mins and then when u paint the paper stays flat and gets less ruind by the paint and its easier to blend the colors... So it probably works with a canvas and acrilics too
Im 50/50 on naming layers but doing it helps a lot! Especially for color layers that are for light colors. I really recommend setting up folders and naming layers at the start of each step. Ex when I'm ready for colors, I'll make as many layers as I expect to need based on how many colors I'm using then name them after the color or section. Then I can just go through 1 layer at a time and I never forget what I was doing if I need to step away for a while! Kinda the art equivalent of making an outline for your essay honestly
3:32 I actually saw your video about sketchbooks, Sam.
After i watched it, it made me want to buy a sketchbook to see if it can actually help me improve my art. And it did! :D
7:28 I do! I actually meticulously name every single layer with very few exceptions (like when it's just a temporary layer I'm planning on merging with the one below very soon) :)
I find it hilarious when people call me a drawer. Anytime I get a comment from a friend telling me how good a “drawer” I am I’m tempted to just turn my pfp into a drawer and brand myself as everyone’s favorite drawer
It is actually works 13:23 it helped me alot
As a person who's not native english speaker, i love Sam's speech❤
Its not fast, not loud but understandable, such a heaven for my ears~
Ah, yes. We drawers are furniture that holds clothes for your every need 😌
Inaccurate, I’m a cabinet that merely stores paint buckets
Does anyone ever called you a scketcher? Like, i'm not a shoe...
(English isn't my first language don't judge me please 🥲)
For any acrylic painters anywhere if you end up having to stop mid painting and dint want your paint to dry up, put the pallete in a zip lock bag with a papertowel this will keep the paint wet and usable. (When I triednthis out I did it for a few days and it worked!) However it did dry out faster once I finally used it so keep that in mind
10:42

Sam: struggling to attack the cons. and do not offend the feelings of an art baby 💮😪
they are both perfect 💗
Cylinder is great for perspective but like boxes it works/feels good to some people and doesn’t/feels terrible to others. Each person should use methods suited to them! Some methods are bad for one artist and perfect for another. No one right way.
Hey sam, your videos have helped me improve my art tremendously. You make a lot of overwhelming information very easy to digest, thank you!
3:42 how dare you I love my sketchbook
I have taken many tips from you sam and my art has improved so much also I'm recreating your work to learn even more about your art style. Thanks for being Sam!
Sam, you literally make me actually study and pay attention to anatomy, color theory, etc.
10:37 I relate to this on a mental level lol
Something about calling an artist a "drawer" just feels so weird..
something wholesome: my mom loves your channel even though she isn't an artist. she thinks you give amazing art tips and is helpful to my art journey :)) 💙
Since my friend who uses a thousand layers calls me crazy, I’m gonna put this here:
Layer 1 - Sketch
Layer 2 - Background
Layer 3 - Skin shade and highlights
Layer 4 - Hair shade and highlights
Merge layer 3 & 4
Layer 3 - Clothes, shade, and highlights
Merge layer 4 & 3
Alpha lock layer 1 (sketch) and color it to make it look nicer
Merge them all into one layer except for the bg
Layer 3 - Rendering
(Sometimes) layer 4-5 - lighting
And finally, merge them all together
Imagine only using less than 5 layers in most of your drawings for a living 🙄
Couldn’t be me
When coloring faces I always separate eyes, nose, lips and hair with only one layer. Its very nice and reduces stress when youre finding that one little line you accidentally put. And it reduces lags with phones like mine
this series will never end
The first 16 seconds absolutely killed me 😂❤

Big artists when people draw differently than they do:
Fr, underrated comment honestly.
13:36 Maybe she's just using rubbing alcohol because it dries faster than water
the thing about boxes is that you're just finding the shapes of a figure/ finding the big planes of a figure, you can also find the angles, make an imaginary envelope basically revising before beginning with details, remember to measure anatomically. I read this in (Figure Drawing Master Class: Lessons in life drawing)
This man has the most ASMR inducing voice I’ve ever heard.
This start god. "O Hey didn't see you there." It made me feel deja vu, I think ive heard this before huh...
Cylinders are actually thaught in art school and can work wonders, your art is great but sometimes you are nonsensical
i wanna say it so bad but
i mean, dude literally says “it’s okay if you draw differently than me, we just can’t be friends”. i don’t think everything he says is necessarily serious or a strict guideline lmao
you can take some advice from him and leave out others, i still draw heads with boxes tbh.
Wow chill out broh
7:30, I find that sometimes it’s easier to just group things generally, and label thoughs. Helps me more than layers, or naming them.
The bird plushie is me 24/7
I've been watching your videos for like 4 hours straight while drawing, I now have 42 layers I normally use at most 20-
7:09
Me being an equestrian: yeah you DEFINITELY want to have a reference it looks like you’ve never seen a horse before…
*2 seconds later* that was supposed to be **with** the reference..?
Glad I'm not the only one who thought that. 🤣
Sam always gives so many great tips! I am currently failing art, so I am gonna binge watch these videos😅
15:17 HE WENT CROSSEYED💀

16:23
Sam, my life will never be the same...
The water on backside of canvas for acrylic paints accually works, I get the Bob Ross feels when I do that :D
Some happy clouds over there ;)
As a drawer, I really like your tips, thank you for helping me improve
LMAOO DRAWER 😭✋
In regards to the wetting the canvas trick, you are meant to spray the back of a stretched canvas and let it dry to get it to shrink and *stretch* over the frame. If you want your first layer to stay wet longer, add drying retarder or switch to oils.
3:48 // GIRLIE YOU DID THOSE ON IBISPAINT!? TEACH ME HOWWWW
"I'm all for people doing things the way they like to do it, but if it's not like the way I do things then it's probably wrong." - Sam 2022
this is my new favorite quote
yeah except a lot of these are things people learn literally in art schools. He thinks that just because he's incapable of doing it correctly that it's a bad tip instead of him just not understanding it or being bad at it. He's acting extremely elitist and this entire video just seems to be him trying to make himself feel superior to small creators and those who are just learning.
All he is doing is shit talking strangers
@@kagekoot he makes these as a joke
Joke: /jōk/ (n) a thing that someone says to cause amusement or laughter, especially a story with a funny punchline.

3:17 STOP THE FANTASIA MUSIC HIT SO HARD
5:13 I feel you 😭
Words infinitely better than drawers: artists, illustrators, designers, painters, etc.
I never thought I’d see the day when Sam gets sponsored by raid shadow legends lol
7:28 I usually name the groups like a sketch group, a color/rendering group, and a detail/light/vfx group. Since I need some organization to stay efficient (but I'm kinda lazy) I figured that naming the groups is a good way to achieve that organization, rly recommended
Answering the question: I do in fact name my layers sometimes. Especially the one I name "sketch". For others I sometimes use short one letter names like "s" for shadows, "l" for lights.
I don't draw anymore, but when I used to, I named like 90% of my layers. I did sort of realism in digital art, so I had many of them. I also used to make groups of them.
anyone else skeptical about 9:01 that kind of progress in "a few weeks" is insane.
I am. Even if they paid attention to contours, getting that perfect in a few weeks is impossible. It would be way better, but not photorealistic
@@eat_buttons yeah i think the teacher just wanted to sell her lessons lol
i also add water to the back of my canvases, but not for the same reason as that lady, it doesn’t help with the painting directly, it just can tighten up loose cheap canvas. It’s really helpful for artists who can’t afford expensive canvas
10:45
Drawers?💀💀💀 I know people who write are writers, but Drawers?

Whenever asks if I'm a drawer, I tell them no, I'm a cabinet/dresser.
Yay another samdoesarts video!!❤️
14:25 cylinder-kun and box-chan
14:46 I honestly think drawing a square first for when your drawing the head is better, because it helps me not make the head an extremely big head
I happy that there are lots of people now days sharing their tips but also sad at the same time because there are too many 'artists' trying to give you their tips and tricks, meaning there are a lot of people helping but not necessarily people that really know what their doing, too many people sharing misinformation on leads to more misinformation and more untrained artists thinking a few tricks will make them pros.
I am an artist myself and I know I'm not all that good but when ever I do seek tips and information I always seek what I need from actual people who know what their doing and not from an app full of untrained artists who only share mostly terrible information to portray themselves as smart just to reel in the views and likes.
Don't get me wrong I am not saying all art tricks on apps are wrong, I am just telling you to take all these tutorials with a grain of salt and don't rely on them and actually follow a pro artist who not only knows what their doing but also have many many many years of experience.
I love that people are correcting him like he didnt almost ruin a small creators carrier
You are the best Sam❤ I 've learned so much from you
yess
I keep a sketch book in my bag and a big sketch book under my keyboard. Not only does it raise the keyboard making it more comfortable to type, but also I just move the keyboard, open the book and sketch. When I'm done, I close it, move the keyboard back and continue to use the computer.
Sam needs to launch his own art tips.
13:22 I didn't think about this usecase but someone told me that the canvas (and due to that also the frame) contracts a bit while water (or color) dries on it. To make it contract evenly you should spray the whole canvas with water before starting to paint.
I noticed that a canvas on which that wasn't done was bent so there is a gap between the wall and the canvas which wouldn't be there if you sprayed it before (I did try that)
9:28 he is not being serious, the title of the video is "some NOT so helpful advice i recieved in art school"
There’s nothing like wining your football game then having a Sam upload
