The UI of the Homekit app needs to show up on the Apple TV for it to be a real home hub. It has limited options in control centre and only seems to function for cameras and automations. I'd like to see all my accessories listed and my rooms. That way I could turn on and off lights in any room etc.
So correct me if I'm wrong: I cannot use Homekit (and share it with my wife when we're at home) without a hub, right? I just want to remote a couple of plugs, it's a bit overkill to have to add an Apple TV just for that...
My problem in using an Apple TV, as hub, is that I don't turn my television on, because I don't watch live TV . This is because I do not have a TV licence ( required, here, in England ). So I currently use a mini Apple HomePod that is permanently live, in my office. I also have 3 first generation large HomePods and another mini HomePod installed . So I have speakers in 4 rooms as my initial HomeKit devices. You said that your doorbell camera will pop on your TV screen , when you are watching a program. That's fine. But if you have your TV turned off, The Apple TV mk4 will just act like my mini HomePod. won't it ? .
What version of Apple TV do you need? We have an older Apple TV (not 4K) and wonder if it will work? I’m assuming the older Apple TV doesn’t have Thread capabilities, how important is that? Thanks In advance for answering my questions.
@@cheefussmith9380 I ended up just buying a new Gen2 AppleTV 4K and love it. Not just as a HomeKit Hub but also is now our main portal for how we watch TV. Zero regrets upgrading and continuing to build out our smart home using HomeKit as the interface
@@cheefussmith9380 yeah if you don't need a AppleTV then consider the HomePod mini. Great addition to the HomeKit for a hub and has all the technology the AppleTV does and much less ;)
I LOVE MY Chromecast TV bought few months ago , since i am Android google user , dose the same S as this APPLE TV & paid $50 not $200..APPLE TV is rip off like usual APPLE is

I lifes a beach. I enjoy the waves.
Does the Apple TV has to be on always to be a home hub or just needs to be plugged in to power
🤔It appears that my Apple TV is my hub but I didn’t get that “Home” icon when I opened the Control Center menu.🤷♂️
same here
Anyone know how to get the icon up? Mine is connected too.
Does the apple tv work as a hub even if it's turned off? Or does it need to be on at all times?
It’s on pause mode even if it is turn off. So, yes, it does work
Wich apple tv? What model?
Why do I not see the homekit widget in command center?
I want to ask you about the version of tv that support hub home
Besides using a apple tv as a home hub do you use a different hub like scriped or HOOBs or even homey pro
I did not know this, I’ve had a stupid ARLO for a few years and it will be cool to use Siri to see who’s at the front door
Which version of the Apple TV do you need to work with home kit? What if I have an older Apple TV non 4K?
Hi
I have to say, You are brilliant.
Best video ever. as I needed the info to view home cameras.
Thanks
Great review!!!!!
Can you still use it and set everything up with a non-apple phone? Does this just add steps? Do you lose functionality if your phone is non-apple?
Does this work with ring
Does apple tv 3 gen (a1469) work with homekit?
Can I use a google nest doorbell camera with the HomeKit??
Thank you for this video. I’m trying to add Arlo to home kit but I’m not sure how to do it? Do you think you can help me? Thank you.

I didn't even think about this. I don't watch tv either and rarely have a screen on. What did you end up doing?

@@pechorton cool :) we have a smart tv so we don’t need, but maybe it would be good for HomeKit.

@@pechorton yep, that’s what I’m deciding between. Whether the $70 extra between those 2 is worth it… I’ll let you know.
Will this work with Apple TV 2nd generation as a home hub?
All of you come for 2:34
Great video, but the Windows computer in the background is throwing me off with the apple centric video.
