    I don't think opossums are cute but I am impressed that she went straight down the chain link.

      I spent much time exploring the ravines of Toronto in the 70s and never saw an opossum. They seem to have become quite common in Southern Ontario. I would guess that many hitched rides with 18 wheeler trucks that originated in the USA. Warming temps probably helped them thrive up here. Coyotes are also a recent addition to our wildlife. I assume they just walked here in a somewhat natural expansion of their range. Like Racoons, they do well in cities with available green space.

    What?! You have possums in Canada?! I'm so jealous, that and for the black squirrels you have. We have neither in North Dakota, but I wish we did. I really didn't think possums went that far north...

      @MyAltdraco Рік тому +2

      well, well, I just looked up the precise lat/long of Toronto vs. Bismarck and learned you are farther south than us (not by a lot, but still!); that and your east coast location must account for the possum. Thanks, I learned something new today!

    Is the black squirrel unusual?

    • @gateswildlife
      @gateswildlife  Рік тому +7

      Black squirrels are actually apart of the Eastern Grey Squirrel family. The difference in colour comes from a genetic anomaly that prevents their fur from turning grey. Black and grey squirrels are extremely common in Toronto!

    • @Alsatiagent
      @Alsatiagent Рік тому +2

      @@gateswildlife There is also a "ghost" squirrel which might be recessive gene albino. Many have claimed to see one in Trinity Bellwoods Park (downtown Toronto) but as far as I know no one has produced a photo. Someone introduced Black Eastern Grey Squirrels to England and the big bullies are displacing the local, English species. There is an interview clip of Perry Ferrel shocked by the sight of one in Queens Park. In the middle of a sentence about his band he stops and says "squirrels...you have black squirrels!". I had no idea they were not common across the Continent. Love your channel, it introduces compassion towards "nuisance" wildlife all over the globe.
