There's still hope! It's crucial to see that we have alternatives to replace plastic. Still, we also need to be aware that these alternatives are clean. Our crew filmed a project that intends to solve our water issue. The idea is to turn seawater into fresh water in a clean way. The project is still under construction, but we are curious to see if it turns out to really work.

I really wished that this was possible, but its not. We are humans. We are ment to destroy ourselfs. Its our nature, if you believe it or not. Just because you can convince 1% of the population to live a sustainable life doesnt mean the rest is gonna follow or even accept this. And to be honest: We deserve to be gone. Let me guess: Very pessimistic. Tell me something we didnt know. By the way: Lets just look forward and see the future ;)

I love this! I'm all for this sort of thing, especially using what remains of sugarcane being used for meal trays. I also love that the man refused to bleach the meal trays and that he actually pays his employees a living wage. Quite a good man there!
The pineapple scraps as well, with the products having seeds in them so that people can also grow new plants from these biodegradable items.
Is this sort of thing being done here in North America, or available here? Just wondering.

As long as we keep treating bio plastic products the same way we do with regular plastics we still have the same problem. It’s still a plastic that should be disposed off and treated in the right way. Biodegradable plastic is btw not the same as bio-based plastics and need to be treated differently.

I have some concerns with the way this technology is already being used in the food service industry. A lot of restaurants and grocery stores in my area are already using forks and spoons made of wheat, corn, and sugar cane. This is an issue for people allergic to gluten and corn. Also, many people allergic to latex are also allergic to avocados. Some of these spoons and forks also have an immediate taste the second you put them in your mouth that makes the food taste awful. The sugarcane-paper food containers are also awful. They literally dissolve when hot food is put in them and sticky things like rice stick to them pulling up paper fibers. There is one sushi restaurant that uses these and I have to request they put a piece of plastic wrap or foil under my sushi so the rice doesn't get contaminated with paper fibers which totally defeats the purpose of not using plastic. They have to at least make these compostable products meant to replace plastic ones as durable and waterproof as the plastic ones and also not make the food taste bad if they're used to serve food. Also, I am worried that for things meant to be used more than once, since the plastic is designed to be degraded by bacteria, a bacteria could infect the item such as the shoe and degrade it before the owner actually wants to throw it away. Don't use this biodegradable plastic in electronics, because you don't want your phone to die because it's physically infected with a bacteria before you wanna throw it away either.

A small piece of plastic doesn't "totally defeat" the purpose of getting rid of plastic packaging - there's a substantial difference in mass there. But I wonder about using wax coatings in that instance - when I was a kid, bread came in waxed paper. Seems like that could be a good idea for surfaces that will contact the food.
