- The Yokouchi Residence is a stunning house located in Karuizawa, Japan, that combines traditional Japanese elements with a contemporary approach. Situated on a plot surrounded by lush forests near a golf course, the residence was designed to seamlessly integrate with the surrounding nature.
The owner, a busy doctor, sought a serene environment where they could escape the daily routine and connect with nature. The owner's wife also desired a visually relaxing home, where spaciousness would be unified with the vibrant greenery of the forest.
The design incorporates eaves that maintain a lower height than the treetops, in harmony with the neighboring houses, creating a smooth transition between the indoor spaces and the surrounding landscape. Delicate details on the edge of the eaves provide a light floating sensation throughout the roof, adding a touch of elegance and sophistication to the residence.
The facade walls are predominantly composed of large floor-to-ceiling glass windows, effectively blurring the boundaries between the interior and the external landscape. The house features barrier-free access, allowing residents to freely walk through and appreciate the natural beauty around them.
The overall look of the house showcases evident traits of traditional Japanese architecture, such as the external deck, prominent eaves, and a wooden structure slightly raised off the ground, providing ventilation and moisture control. However, modernist influences can also be observed, harmoniously blending with the Japanese architectural elements.
The Yokouchi Residence is an architectural expression that seeks harmony with the surrounding forest, avoiding any sense of incongruity. With its careful integration with nature, breathtaking views, spaciousness, and refined details, the house offers the owner a tranquil and inspiring retreat where they can find peace and connection with nature.

Stunning. Such Beauty and balance with the surroundings.
One of the most beautiful houses I have ever seen
the "floating" roof is just 🤌🏼
Stunning! Absolutely love it! So tranquil and serene. 👏👏👏👍🤩😊
So simple yet so different .
When you see the house at night, it's like there is no glass walls.. and sll of the sudden the door looks irrelevant to the space.... loved this house
👍🏆👍
👍Simple and Sophisticated👍
Gracias ☺️
I would love to live in that house
blurring the boundary between the interior and the exterior landscape....seemlessly integrates with the environment...vuslually relaxing home...smooth transiton ..traditonal Hampton features with modernist influences..harmonious.. integration woth nature.. calm retreat... connection with nature
Really great, would like a better building entrance and toilet for guests. Also master bedroom toilet is not 100% separate from separate shower and bathroom. Same entrance.
🙌🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Il troppo linera innovativo di sintesi modernista ...potrebbe sicuramente risultare "freddo" " glaciale"
😍
Somrone took my idea😅
👌🏾❤️👌🏾

… what about the pole in the middle of the room…? Didn’t know the name of a good structural engineer!
Ops!! 😄
It is a desirable feature. Something for the kids to climb too.
It's for pole dancing 😂
Is the owner's wife not an owner aswell?
Looks like a doctors office inside.
Thank you for the comment 🙏
.
Volumes intéressants, peut-être trop ouverts sur l’extérieur.
Il résulte de l’ensemble une froideur certaine et un malaise prévisible pour les occupants en raison d’une trop grande ouverture sur l’extérieur…
Where do they keep all the crap from Dollar Tree?
Not realky integrated in nature at all. A lot of glas and modern.
Nothing special, simple modern bland typical glass house retreat 👍🏻
Thank you for commenting 😊🌟
