  • The Kua Bay Residence is a family retreat nestled along a rugged coastline in Hawaii. It embraces the Mauka-Makai spirit, symbolizing the flow of lava from the mountains to the sea, through its direct connections to the volcanic landscape and majestic views of the Pacific Ocean. The residence's site captures the contrasting landscapes between land and sea in the Hawaiian topography. On one side of the property, dark lava formations create a dramatic backdrop. On the other side, the immediate proximity to the shimmering waters of the coast makes you feel at the edge of the world. The challenge was to manipulate the terrain so that the house blends with the landscape.
As you approach the residence, it slowly reveals itself, hiding among the dark lava formations that create the dramatic backdrop. Upon entering, expansive views open up towards the turquoise waters of the Pacific Ocean beyond. The house unfolds as a series of experiences. To reduce visual impact and offer more privacy and seclusion, the guest house and garage are embedded in the rugged landscape. Upon entering the suite, guests are immediately drawn to an adjacent lava cave - a sophisticated and atmospheric outdoor space to admire the beauty of natural lava and bathe in privacy.
The main residence has an L-shaped layout, with rooms arranged along one wing and communal spaces and the master suite along the other. The spacious living room opens up on both sides through full-height sliding glass doors that retract into the walls. The volume functions as an extension of the surrounding landscape, serving as an indoor-outdoor pavilion housing the kitchen, dining area, and living room.
Further blurring the line between interior and exterior, there is a courtyard formed by the arrangement of the guest house and the main residence. On one side of the courtyard, there is a series of water mirrors, mirrored by a group of trees and a spacious lawn on the other side. Alaskan yellow cedar lines the eaves of the exterior pathway, while the facade is clad in horizontal bands of basalt, echoing the layers of lava. The furnishings are discreet, with light-toned sofas and chairs acting as a counterpoint to the dark lava and basalt. A balcony facing the ocean descends from the pavilion to an infinity pool and an outdoor living area, furnished in the same color palette.
The Kua Bay Residence is a masterpiece of modern architecture, harmoniously blending with Hawaii's volcanic landscape. With its stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and its harmonious integration with the surrounding nature, the Kua Bay Residence is a luxurious and tranquil retreat that embraces the spirit and beauty of Hawaii, reinforcing its reputation as one of the most breathtaking places in the world.
