- At B&H’s 2018 Depth of Field conference, wedding photographer Susan Stripling explains how she approaches using flash and artificial lighting to mimic the natural light of the sun. She reveals her philosophies, techniques, and setups to help us understand the importance of making specific choices as a photographer to achieve a desired final product.

Great video! She has her system organized for everything, from portraits to reception. Don’t have to worry about the lighting.
to all those who make comments about her just look at her list of accomplishments where are yours she is the epitome of wedding photography
Another solid tutorial. This is one of those problems that I've run into a lot with photography and haven't quite figured out how to adjust in video, so thanks! Even footage shot during golden hour can benefit from these adjustments to help normalize the colors. Cheers!
Great Presentation. Lots of useful information and insight.
I learned a lot. Thank you!
Do you have your ISO set on auto ISO with a maximum and minimum ISO
For golden hour, I would prefer a quarter strength CTO gel on the flash. Any time the lighting angle is replicating a setting sun, use the CTO 1/4, just a bit warmer.
I'm all for flash and all, but that first picture of the formals, looked much better in natural light. The highlights on their heads are blown out and some on the womans cheeks. She should've put an ND filter, moved them to a different spot, or not use flash.
Great information................well presented. Thank you, Susan.
People would always get a special recept, I think the special is it to make it seample as you can. The resuld speaks for her. I think if you know what are you do, than one light more than enough, if you do not know what are you doing... no light would you help. Thanks for sharing your workflow.
How can the family formal photo shot with extra light look better than a natural light ? It made them all look sweaty and shiny in my opinion.
ur opinion is wrong
Glad that is your opinion
I said the same thing. The one lit was over lit. It looked worse then the natural one
Amada Richards actually yours is
I agree, the first example of flash or off-camera light was poor, but I agreed with most everything else she showed.
47:16 - Except you don't want to shoot into actual lasers, at least your camera's sensor doesn't want you to.
Great presentation, thank you! I find that I'm using grids and CTO gels a lot more lately depending on the look I'm going for.
I dream of having a couple that would give you enough time to be this creative. In over 20 years I have had only 1 couple do that, all the other times it is rush, rush and no cocktail hour around here :(
Because I also have to be at a faster shutter speed because I’m not freezing the action. 29:30 I thought it was the exact opposite that if you want to freeze action you have to be at a faster speed
Thanks for the video.... Very well presented...
ur pictures are very good
I agree with Maxim Dupliy, Although I do agree with her natural light argument.
great stuff!
Great presentation
Would love to see you shoot headshots on video so I can see your wonderful style, how you do it.
like your work and information, wish there were more understanding of wording
Wait! SS went back to Canon?!
Yeah, she said there were not enough women at Nikon. I was surprised.
Wonder why she switched to canon from Nikon.
Good question, I know a lot of people who switched to Sony, wonder why Canon?
Lens selection, AF, ergonomics, better video eco-system, printers, better 1st party flash system are some of the things people prefer over Nikon.
To irritate her husband Mr. Mautner.. he's a Nikon ambassador and fanboy for many years..
hemidesign I can assure you that I didn’t buy a camera system to irritate my husband, but thanks for the laugh! 😂
When do you stop talking about the equipment you use and depth of field?
Today everyone has a camera , of course , but its so hard to find great work , harder then ever.
Nice Haircut.
It sounds like she wants to keep her jobs so why will she tells us anything unique?
wasted 15 min on this video.. stopped after 14 mins when i saw the image with iso 2500
ISO 2500 isnt that bad anymore. It used to be but the newer model cameras can handle this with very little noise. I have friends that will shoot ISO 5000 on the regular.
lol why, idiot
LOL you don't understand photography at all then
THis video drew out the fools. I bet I took an iso 12800 better than your some of your photos if you even take photos....
If you use ETTR the ISO will not be that noisy because of all the information you collect in the exposure so dont turn your nose up at high ISO its not what it used to be
for me there was nothing special, not in the pics nor in the technique + many Profoto ads
that is why she and others speaker get these gears for free, granted i would do the same if i get it for free...
Oy, yer an idiot. It's not a Profoto ad if she's talking about the gear she uses. What, she's sposed to not tell you the brand of the stuff she uses?
I agree 100%
Why are so many people bitching about profoto. The stuff works good works stop crying or being so cynical because of the price.
Marcos Enrique Ruiz Rivero II hi Marcos! I don’t get my gear for free. I talk about what I use because well, it’s the gear I use...which I paid for. Just to clarify!
Hoe many times is she going to pronounce scenario wrong...? Everything else was on point!
Incredible how many other photographers are way better than she is, and her work is not above average, and they produce better work than hers yet use cheaper light equipment, lost count how many times she and other speakers said "profoto" seriously as if you could only create better images than her with lets say godox light, the whole thing is a huge add for profoto...
LOL not a Profoto ad idiot, if she used GOdox she'd say so. If youre so good why do you not speak anywhere thoguht so
If you're so good why don't you speak oh right, you don't
Dude, you're saying "many other photographers are way better than she is", I mean, c'mon man, I'm not here to judge you, but she's fantastic and talented woman (much better than Jessica Clarie and Jasmine Star 100X more)
@@amadarichards2159 This rebuttal is ridiculous... you know when food tastes poor don't you? Doesn't mean your a chef does it? and no one expects you to be
@hemidesign I totally agree with you! I would Say Jasmine Star does more of a business than photography.
