I already knew a lot of information in the first half but when I got to 27:36, I saw the bit about the Content Directory Manager and that really opened my eyes. That helps me with the exact problem I was trying to solve.
Thank you so much! I'll add another episode on render settings next, I've been meaning to do this for a while and got sidetracked LOL Watch this space!
Awesome Jay! Perfect timing for me, as I just upgraded to Daz 4.10 on my new computer, from Mac Pro to a new Windows 10 setup. Thank you so very much! I will look forward to your next installment. 😊
Very helpful information, Jay. I'm enjoying your DAZ tutorials, and they've saved me a ton of time and headaches. I'm relatively new to DS (I've been using Poser for a little over 9 years). Your tutorial on using the DIM was really helpful with getting DS set up on 2 machines. I do hope you create the video about the history of the different DAZ characters. I still use the V4 figure a lot (I LOVE the Girl 4!). I had to giggle when you said 10 gigabytes, though... I can't even remember when I only had 10 gigs... LOL I don't even want to think about how much stuff I've bought over the years. I should own stock in Renderosity... 😁 Anyway, keep up the good work - your tutorials are great! 👍
Haha, yes being buried in content can be a burden indeed! What I do these days with DAZ content is DIM to uninstall things I no longer need, that frees up some room in my brain (and on my hard drive). With Renderosity content I tend to create a new Runtime folder into which I install the packages I want to work with. Since uninstalling Rendo content is tricky, I just get rid of the whole folder and start another one with a different collection. There's so much to say about characters, I'm thinking of starting a new series when this one is finished: DAZ Studio 201, specifically about characters. The history, the differences, how posing and skeletons work, joint control morphs, how to fit clothing and adjust poke through, that sort of thing. Let me know what you think.
Yes, I'd love to see the DAZ 201 series - I think that would be great! I'm still getting used to DS - I've played with it off and on since they introduced the Iray render engine. I still use Poser for most things (I have a graphic novel / cartoon strip I've been running on Rendo (and my website) for a little over 9 years now, and Poser is my go-to for that). I have all my Poser stuff on external runtimes, backed up in 4 places. The thought of reinstalling all that stuff if anything crashes makes my skin crawl... LOL It's set up so there's a runtime for each base character (i.e. V4 A4 G4 M4 Dawn, etc.), then props (air/space craft, land vehicles, sea vehicles, etc). Much the same for clothing, environments and so on. If I didn't have everything sub-divided and categorized, I'd never find anything! I still use the search tab a lot. Anyway, keep up the great work! I like your friendly "let's sit down and chat" style, Jay.
I've had a look at the last few pages of your series, The Girls from TnA (here's a link for anyone following along: rodslair.com/tna/index.html). I really got into it, I can't wait to delve more into the story there :-) My first thought was "this is so much work"!! Great to hear a little background on how you work. I always find other people's workflow very interesting. The more I'm thinking about DAZ Studio 201, the more I'm looking forward to doing it. There's applying and creating poses, adjusting poses, the whole clothing chapter, materials, interactions, D-Formers, how rigging works, joint control morphs, weight maps...
I really cant thank you enough for this and the others , i have been trying to understand Daz from ver. 2.3 till knoq,,wow. ..I might evenmake a donation..!!!
That was quite an interesting lecture. I've never really used the smart content, but now that I understand its philosophy, I might look into it more often. Also, that view with the different formats, like DAZ-Format or Poser-Format, can be helpful if you know that a certain product came in Poser-files (*.pz2 or *.cr2).
Definitely - those are advanced topics I want to cover. The next episode is about cameras, then lights, then rendering. I'll touch on materials and shaders in those, but I'm planning to go into more detail in the future.
Thank you for making this series, I am a little confused though. What is the difference between Iray and 3-d light in this context. What I mean by that is what exactly is the difference in the clothes if I were to use MDl clothes instead of their RSL counterparts?
Very nice explanation. I wish I could link stuff to smart content. It is not 100% reliable. Some Gen8 content (that I bought from DAZ) does not display with some Gen 8 figures/characters/actors. So I then have to go to content library and find it all over again. It makes these items difficult to find. Such as Gen 8 eyelash attachment! No eyelashes textures work until I apply that to a Gen 8 character. The Gen8 lashes are buried somewhere under anatomy? I think? I wish I could fix that! Anyway, I'm still learning... Your content is great and I'm learning a lot. I didn't know what I didn't know! lol.
Is there a way to make the renders more crisp? When i zoom into one its all pixilated. I did zoom in very close and rendered that, and it doesnt look pixilated. It also doesnt look very crisp. Do you have a vid on that?
Nice vids! Did u meet bug like this?: My smart content is failed to work, when I turn on "filter by context". It shows only the "Midori" character settings, and nothing more. It is baked somehow, doesnt matter if the character content is installed or not. (Products tab reacts the same) - what can be the solution? I want my filter by context option back. :) Do you have any idea or experienced familar?
Filter by Context will show what's relevant to the object that's currently selected in the Scene Tab. Select a Genesis 8 figure, and only Genesis 8 content will show. Select an item of clothing and only things related to that very item will show up (probably very few, perhaps a material set). Try selecting a different object in the scene. Also, make sure there's no text in the search field. It also acts as a filter. Good luck!
Here is a strange question. is there a way to save a Daz Scene with all content used in the scene, for say moving to another PC for rendering, or handing off to another user for posing or lighting etc.
Good question! Sadly not that I know of. In Blender and Carrara there’s an option to add all referenced items into the file, which can then be shared as a standalone file. With DAZ Studio, the only thing you can do is to transfer the scene file and make sure the content that’s referenced therein is installed in a mapped library. If it’s content from the DAZ Store, a dialogue will pop up asking you to install missing content (if it’s your own account).
I have a question, and I don't know where to ask. I want to modify something that someone else has created... For example, I see a nice looking loveseat, but I want to modify it to being a couch. Or I see a two-car garage, and make it a three car. How do I do that? I bought an environment for Daz, and I like it, but I want modify it for my needs. I don't even know the correct terminology to use, what to google, etcetera... can you help? thx
That’s a deep question indeed, and I feel your pain in regards to not knowing where to begin. I’ve often thought about writing a book called “3D for Humans” to address some of the vocabulary, perhaps one day I will do that. In answer to your question: it’s complicated. Sometimes you can get away with simply duplicating a component directly in DAZ Studio, then hiding the faces you don’t want to see. So in your loveseat/couch example, hide the left/right side of the loveseat respectively, then move the two objects close together until it looks like they’re a longer couch. That may or may not look good enough for your scene. Another way to do it would be to bring the loveseat into a modelling app like Blender, then grab the left vertices and move them over or stretch them out. That makes a longer object, but you’ll have that bit in the middle that will also stretch the texture in the middle. You can also add geometry where you need it, but that will destroy the UVs and your textures won’t work anymore. Those are all approaches you can take, and a skilled 3D modeller would probably find other ways. It depends on how much time you want to invest there. Sometimes it’s just quicker to buy a couch for those reasons, or start a new model from scratch. Hope this helps to get you started on the right path.
Hey buddy, can you please help me with this problem. I keep getting an error that content files are missing on a particular character I/m trying to open. Can you please make a tutorial on how to re-link missing files because right now I'm only getting a box-like character...:-( Thanks! for all the tutorials. Cheers! Marty
Hi Marty, sadly there’s no easy fix for that. It usually means that the content you’re trying to load is not installed correctly in the library you’re using, or the content is not installed at all, or the library that it is (correctly) installed in is not referenced in the Content Directory Manager. The fastest way to fix those errors is to install the content again, making sure it goes into a library that DAZ Studio knows about.
All Smart Content products are also available via the Content Library tab, and as such are therefore “manual content” as you call it. The “smart” bit is merely a database entry that keeps track of which items go together, you don’t have to use it though.
