Brilliant. Absolute genius on the mapping to get the sweepable mids and a tilt (more a sort of balance scales or double shelf really) EQ. TC should give your a signature Toneprint of this in the library!
Dude, your videos are fire. This one especially cool as it served as an intro for me to the tone print editor, but more importantly I now have a parametric EQ on the board. Thank you!
this is so incredibly powerful! You just made it possible for me to pull my (wonderful) JHS Haunting Mids pedal out of the Plethora's effects loop and use this method instead; thanks!
Great hack ! The more i learn about this plethora thing the more i want one. PS : If you affect the frequency sweep control to an expression pedal or even maybe just the mash, then you got yourself a wah for the same price ;c)
Yup, thought about it before but there were a couple of things that didn't really go according to initial plan. The expression pedal's response was a bit laggy, and the EQ bands have a very small Q (it is a multiband compressor after all, so you don't really want a very abrupt crossover region anyway...), so you never really get the sharp resonance peak that a wah would require. More testing needed when the new firmware pops out.
Me too! Been looking at the Plethora ever since it was first released. Watching these brilliant videos is getting me closer and closer to pulling the trigger 🤣🤣
Hi, thanks for the guide. In fact, an EQ function should be on board these days. That's a poor picture of TC E. I'm not aware that they have an EQ pedal, but that's no reason not to withhold such a function for such a device. A BOOSTER could be more easily crafted from an EG by simply turning up the output instead of bending the compressor. But I think an EQ is essential. I have now ordered the device. It will then show whether it stays or goes back. That's where I accidentally found his older ZOOM G3. These are 3 pedals in one housing and significantly more functions are integrated. Maybe that's another idea as an effects section for pedal distortion pedals, Cheers.
I have a related question. This video is wonderful (thanks!), as are all of yours on the Plethora, but I'm wondering if you could do a video just on the various uses of the compressor (as a compressor). My issue with the Hypergravity as it exists in the Plethora is that pretty much all of the Toneprints result in a massive volume spike if you turn up the sustain much at all. So, specifically what I would like to see is a video showing the best way (including the best Toneprints) for using the Hypergravity as a compressor/boost. I don't want to kill all the compression values as you do in this video - I want a compressor that also works as a boost. I hope that makes sense, and thanks again!
Thank you! Great info here! The manual is really lacking regarding the use of integrating midi with the pedal. I would love see a video explain midi integration with this pedal.
I have a new x3. Made sure to update to latest firmware. (4.5.08) Trying to follow this procedure but that segment on your screen that shows the Mapping does not appear on my screen along with Cross Over. I need to click on the tabs to change views. Not a terrible thing, but curious. Also, is this an available/downloadable TonePrint? Should be.
The tabs not showing up side by side might be related to screen size / resolution... I record my screenshots at 1080p, but if I shrink the toneprint editor window, the mapping tab gets thrown in with the other ones. And no, this toneprint isn't available to download officially, but I might see if I can lobby the powers that be! 😁
Make sure that you're mapping the knobs to the new parameters. If they're still mapped to threshold / ratio, when you save the TonePrint the pedal will read the positions of the pots and go back to them.
Thank you! I haven't tried it yet, but in theory you could map both frequency curves to the expression pedal, but I'm not sure how well it'll as the sweep isn't linear in between the frequency points. 🤔
This is awesome! Makes me wonder, would it be possible to create a toneprint to mimic a Tube Screamer used as a boost? Gain at 0, compression (like the TS9) then level and tone to play with..
That is an interesting proposition... there are obviously some complexities in the TubeScreamer circuit that the HyperGravity isn't designed to replicate, such as the soft clipping that gives the TS that "compressed" feel even with gain at 0. That said, you should be able to tweak the 3 EQ bands for a mid boost, and then tweak the compressor parameters to get them to react a bit more like it... 🤔
This is brilliant!! Could this be used with an expression pedal to create a wah pedal? By setting the mid sweep to the expression pedal or something? Is that how Wah pedals work??
There's a bit more to Wah pedals than that, but it's worth a try to see if the effect would still work for you. I haven't tested it yet, but because you can't do a continuous mid sweep, instead jumping between fixed frequencies, might give a bit of a weird effect. Still worth a try!
Wow, that's fantastic. I've been wanting a mid-range booster but haven't decided which one. Maybe I don't need to decide! Can't wait to work with this. Any news on the Helix getting added?

There are 34 different parameters for the Hypergravity compressor Tone Print. Is there somewhere I can read about these so I can begin to intelligently make adjustments? Have you tried that eq-boost in front of a driven amp? I consicher buying a X3 but I do need a boost for solos (to cover my bad techniqe😀). Does the Plethora work as a boost here, too? Also: does it produce any kind of (digital) hiss when running on front of a driven amp?
Hi FIllippe ! Great video again but I'm sure that I'm doing it wrong... I have the preset as you did it, and use it for my lead tone (SLO Synergy in the red channel), I have set the EQ on 60% bass and treble and 40% on mid for my High gain rhythm tone (which is great) but when I switch to Lead, I would like to get the mids back (the EQ on the amp is shared for the 2 channels, rhythm and lead)... but with your preset, my sound is getting less in volume and it feels compressed... if you can help, that would be great ! Thanks again

What I still don't get- you can only use those toneprints which are listed in the app by the "plethora category", right? So all others that are listed are not useable? Any idea how to create an drive or smooth distortion for bass with the tools that are available? Or otherwise: a tutorial for that would be awesome! Nice work btw in this one here...
Hi Donnie - yes, you're basically correct, you can only use toneprints that have been ported for the Plethora. If you were looking for Spectradrive toneprints, that won't be possible because it doesn't have the Spectradrive pedal built in, and therefore, no overdrives or distortion. 😕 Thank you so much for the kind words, though 🙏🏻
Any idea how wide a frequency band is impacted by the mids push \ cut using this method? Is it everything in between the cross over points equally or is there a “Q” somehow? This could be really really useful. But I’m wondering if it would be better to hard set the mid point and free the sustain knob to serve as a 1 knob compressor.
They're anything but surgical, and there's a massive overlap between them so that it doesn't sound weird as a multiband compressor - which is after all the main functionality. I'll come up with graphs to illustrate this soon.
Sorry, missed the second bit of your question. 🤦🏻♂️ Yup, a one knob compressor alongside would work too, and that's the beauty of the TonePrint system - infinitely customizable! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hi @stancoo - I don't have access to a BBE sonic stomp, but from their literature on the website, they claim the sonic stomp does phase adjustments between frequency bands - which the Hypergravity can't do. But I did a bit more research into the topic, and found some people cleverer than me demonstrating that it is essentially a 3 band EQ based on a variable-state filter - which the Hypergravity *can* *emulate*. The way I would go about it would be very similar to this video, by killing all the compressor functionality, setting the desired crossover points, then mapping the Level Low and Level High to individual pots. That leaves one pot free to either set an independent Level Mid, or move one (or both) crossover points around, to tune the response. Hope this helps!
Not directly related to this topic, maybe a bit. Do you know, when we use dirtboxes in the fxloop, does it convert the signal even if the insert/loop is positioned at first/last in the chain? Obviously it does when in between fx slots. However using digital dirtbox makes it a 3 times conversion back and forth. So when using pre or post dirt effect is it worth to sacrifice one for the other to minimize the number of conversions by placing the insert to the front or the end, or it's converted anyway so whatever...?
I actually don't know the exact answer to that, but from all the testing I've done I'd say it's quite likely that the conversion happens right after the input buffer, independent of the location of the effects loop. I also prefer to reduce the number of conversions, not as much because of quality (the converters they use nowadays are really good), but because each conversion adds another tiny micro-delay to the sound, and after a whole bunch of them you start to feel it, more than actually hearing it. So yeah, at the end of the day the answer is relatively simple: if it doesn't bother you in the loop, keep it there. If it does, and even if it's just psychological, put it before. :) This doesn't have to be rocket science on the player's end, it's all about having fun, so whatever makes you happy will be the best location for it! 😄
Hello! Question, if I may, about this tone editor. Is it posible to, when using an expression pedal to control the mix of the delay(or any other effect, for that matter) , set the maximum value of the delay mix (toe down position) so that it is not a 100% but, let's say, 25%... so, heel down 0%,toe down 25%? Thanks!
Yup! Check this video, especially the bit where I talk about parameter mapping to knobs& MASH / expression pedal: ua-cam.com/video/aAS0BAeMwTQ/v-deo.html. I also have a few other TonePrint videos where I talk about it, you can find them on my TonePrint editor playlist.
@@PedalPlatform Thanks! I did everything and in the exact order as in that video, but no cigar... still it takes me from 0 to 100 no matter how I set the curve for the delay fx level. Anyway, thank You again for Your help! Cheers!
I think there's a step missing: on the Plethora, go to settings, board, exp assignment, pick modifier, then look for the slot you want to control; once there click on expression modifier to activate it, and deactivate any others that might be active! That should fix it - I hope 😬
Hi Marco, you can start from the same base point from this video, but then in the TonePrint Editor: - Map the 1st knob to X-Over Low, then set all curve points to the bottom of the curve and twiddle the 1st knob; - Map the 3rd knob to X-Over High, then do the same: set the points to the bottom of the curve, twiddle knob. This will deactivate the crossovers, independently of where the physical knobs are set, and make sure they stay that way. - Finally, *CUT ALL SOUND* going into the Plethora and *CAREFULLY* change the mapping of the middle knob from Compressor - Level Mid to Compressor - Level High (or Level All), and redo the curve for the amount of cut / boost you want. Sorry about the caps, but you really don't want 50 dB of boost going anywhere near your speakers if you're on a clean sound... 🤐 Hope this helps, let me know if you need anything else!
Ok one more question, do you know ehx freeze? It's sound retainer, it wil hold tone or chord and you can play over, do you think it's possible to map that? I'm asking just becousd I have no more place in my pedalboard and it would be great if yes, latch function bill be perfect
Pop over to my ko.fi.com page, look for the gallery, and you'll find the screenshots to recreate both the drone delay and the sosmodwash reverb should you want to: ko-fi.com/pedalplatform 🙂
Question oh wise one, could one make this pedal (Hypergravity ) into a cab sim/ compressor by cutting frequencies below and over the usial frequencies. Assuming one places this pedal at thf end of a gsin stage. More importantly... is the Plethora then the best amp in a box on the market?
Hi Dimitris! You don't really need the Hypergravity to do cab sim, the Plethora already has a few built--in IR's that will do a much better work than you could get with the Hypergravity - just activate them on the Global Settings menu and you're good to go. As for the second question: the Plethora doesn't really aim to be an amp in a box, as it's missing the pre-amp / drive options. Instead, it's a really high quality, highly customizable multi-effects unit for almost everything else. :)
Awesome. So i take it this means that patch couldn't be used as a compressor at the same time? If not could you add a separate hypergravity inI the chain if I need compression? Thus using up 2 of the 5 slots?
Yep, you can do both: - If you tweak the threshold / ratio parameters, you can absolutely still use this same patch as a compressor. One cool use for this is simulating power amp sag, rather than having the boost respond linearly; - You can also do exactly what you said, and use 2 hypergravity instances per board, keeping your compression separate from your boost.
@@PedalPlatform Thx for the reply...i would simply want them in one....I would use the same eq and comp settings the entire night. I wouldnt change them. And use the remaining for slots for different effects.
@@PedalPlatform So if i did the this and used it as a comp...would i have to open the app to tweak the eq on the fly or could I do it on the board itself?
It depends on you program it, you can select which parameters you'd want to tweak from the board, and assign those to the knobs, and fix the other ones in the app. As an example, you could have the tilt eq on one knob, boost level in another, and amount of compression (either by adjusting the threshold or the ratio, or both) in the other knob... the possibilities are really endless here. :)
I like hacks, but this demonstrated to me that some serious eq control is needed. Do you know if they have anything in developement? And while they're at it, they should do something with panning aswell. No?
The ones I have personal experience with are the Boss FV-500L (huge, heavy, expensive, built like a tank), and the M-Audio EX-P (cheap, plastic, looks like it'll break if you look at it sideways but isn't horrible if you don't smash Hulk it). Both work well, at completely different price points. 😉

That should fix it - I hope 😬
thank you
Hello, I'm Marco from Aosta (Italy). I have a question: If I want to create a simple boost without EQ what can I do with the Plethora and TP?
Hi Marco, you can start from the same base point from this video, but then in the TonePrint Editor:
- Map the 1st knob to X-Over Low, then set all curve points to the bottom of the curve and twiddle the 1st knob;
- Map the 3rd knob to X-Over High, then do the same: set the points to the bottom of the curve, twiddle knob.
Hope this helps, let me know if you need anything else!
@@PedalPlatform Thank You PP. You are very kind.
Hi! Very interesting! Could I reduce the volume with this as well. Some patches of mine with my stomp boxes can get very loud! Thanks!
Absolutely, if you have a slot available you can program a Hypergravity to be just a volume control per board.
@@PedalPlatform Just wanted to say a big thank you for working these out and sharing!
Ok one more question, do you know ehx freeze? It's sound retainer, it wil hold tone or chord and you can play over, do you think it's possible to map that? I'm asking just becousd I have no more place in my pedalboard and it would be great if yes, latch function bill be perfect
Check this video, specifically the bit about the drone delay toneprint, and see if that would work for you: ua-cam.com/video/-Zn_YxJgKEQ/v-deo.html
@@PedalPlatform nice, i think this is it, please how i create or where i can download drone delay? one more time thanx
Can you load IR’s into the X3?
Nope.
Thanks a lot!!!
Cheers!
Awesome. So i take it this means that patch couldn't be used as a compressor at the same time? If not could you add a separate hypergravity inI the chain if I need compression? Thus using up 2 of the 5 slots?
Yep, you can do both:
- If you tweak the threshold / ratio parameters, you can absolutely still use this same patch as a compressor. One cool use for this is simulating power amp sag, rather than having the boost respond linearly;
- You can also do exactly what you said, and use 2 hypergravity instances per board, keeping your compression separate from your boost.
@@PedalPlatform Thx for the reply...i would simply want them in one....I would use the same eq and comp settings the entire night. I wouldnt change them. And use the remaining for slots for different effects.
Great, that makes things a bit simpler... one can never enough spare slots! 😁
I wish there is global parametric EQ in the Plethora X5 / X3
I like hacks, but this demonstrated to me that some serious eq control is needed. Do you know if they have anything in developement? And while they're at it, they should do something with panning aswell. No?
I don't know 😕 But I do know it's a frequent user request, me included 😁
@@PedalPlatform ok thanks! Panning too?
Op. What expression pedal can u recommend for x5?
The ones I have personal experience with are the Boss FV-500L (huge, heavy, expensive, built like a tank), and the M-Audio EX-P (cheap, plastic, looks like it'll break if you look at it sideways but isn't horrible if you don't smash Hulk it). Both work well, at completely different price points. 😉
Does the desktop app only work on mac?
Nope, there's a version for Windows too. www.tcelectronic.com/product.html?modelCode=P0CLC
@@PedalPlatform thank you so much! subbed!
Amazingly detailed video. Thank you for giving such in-depth look into the X5.👍 Just one question what is a better download for the X5 "platform" program.! I recieved a bit of paper with the "http//.ly" code but the actual stated prompt takes me to the "app store" on my Android device but i can not see one for TC ELECTRONICS pedal platform at all, just "other suggested" apps that are nothing to do with anything for the X5.? Can you advise and any help is much appreciated. Many thanks.👍
Hi Phillipe i found the video for Bluetooth via your channel videos. Thanks once again for such a simply stunning detailed video with focus on the proper goods.! Subscribed..👍🤘🤘🤘🤘
Excellent, let me know if you have any other questions about it, and thank you for the kind comments! :)
