  • Welcome back folks!
This week I am taking you through the rebuild of the first guitar amplifier I ever owned. It's a Yamaha G50-112. I received it when I was about 11 years old, and it was in rough shape even then. I didn't know much about it when I got it, but have come to learn this was a go-to for some gigging musicians. Many folks have called it the "Solid State Fender Reverb". I guess that's why the original musician converted it from a 112 to a 210 with 2x Fender JBL D110F speakers.
This video will take you through all the steps from the cabinet rebuild and tolex, to the fixes and upgrades I made to the electronics. A few new pots, a new jewel lamp, some new switches and jacks, as well as converting it to accept plug-and-play reverb tanks. I threw in a new Accutronics, 3-spring, long delay tank as well!
    Enjoy!

Wow! Fantastic restoration and mod to a great amp. I recently worked on my friend's G50-112 which was in very good shape to being with. I cleaned all the pots and upgraded the reverb (which had broken spring in that tiny chassis mounted tank) into a long tank. Reverb now sounds amazing. Almost like my 1977 Princeton Reverb! I loved his amp so much, I recently bought a rare brown Tolex'd 1982 Yamaha JX35 30 watt amp for $50. Same tiny little tank underneath chassis, so at some point I might put that short tank like you installed in mine.

Thanks! I'm very happy with the outcome. It actually gave me the bug for a mojotone build. Just trying to decide which one now!

The G50 112 was my first amp too! I got it for $50 from the Starving Musician in Santa Clara, Ca. I sold it because it wasn't metal enough. In hingsight, the reverb was great and it had lots of clean headroom, wish I still had it.

Agreed. This one came from a local musician who was actually my dad's barber. I received in the mid 90s and it was already modded with the jbl speakers, and had the blown reverb unit. I didn't know what either of those were at the time. This project put some life into the old guy!

Oh god I have a g100 2x10 mk3, which is a bit different, but does yours weigh as much? Mine is a backbreaker, it came without wheels as well.
I wanted to remake the case for it in hope of reducing the weight, just wanted to know if it’s supposed to be like that in others as well

@@Madeguydo oh yeah it is quite heavy.

@@Musicalmane Ouch, maybe I’ll just settle for adding handles on the sides and ask my bandmate for help to not get herniated discs lol, thanks

Those amps in that yamaha series were designed by Paul Rivera from fender, amp used a parametric eq. Yamaha put a lot into research and development of these units.

This amp is from the previous series (to the Series II amps that Paul Rivera worked on).

@@bb_lz9790 yes that's correct, a series 2 Rivera sold a couple months ago here in Canberra on marketplace for $200, amazing original condition. Sorry I never snapped it up. I have a series 1 also

Amps of this age can benefit also from a full recap, electros for starters a nd resistor check in the power supply and output circuit. Nice job and well done

Great video. Any chance of getting a copy of the schematics for this amp? I've got same one but no sound coming out.

I know this is a long shot but... I'm having the same problem with the distortion on my amp (same model). Do you remember which 2 diodes you replaced to get the distortion back? Any help would be appreciated.

Hello - I have one of these and it's currently broken. I was wondering if you have any pictures of the preamp board underside? I have found a schematic online and mine seems a bit different to the schematic! Any help at all would be gratefully received :)

      Try these two:

Tough to read, but should get you through!

Do you know what kind of potentiometers it uses? The current switches crackle.

I think most are b50k. You should be able to find the schematic online.

Clean those pots with electronic switch cleaner, half the work with older amps like this is a good service ie switch contact and pot cleaning. Then a good recap, power supply at least, use quality electrolytic capacitors.

A good overall clean, remove all old dust and fluff with compressed air, I have even washed old boards. Make sure the boards are thoroughly dry, resolder nearly all joints especially wire connections.
