Hi Peter that astra definitely been neglected you make it look simple i wouldn't have thought the head needed skimming it didn't over heat i would have done the same 👍
Thanks for a very interesting video. The engine disassembly was very new to me as the last head gasket I did was about 30 years ago. Volvo 340 great car. I’m 71 now and can still remember my dad should me how to grind valves, I was about maybe 10, and we used the same little suction cup tool as you did. Best wishes from Kildare
Lads get caught with fitting on heads with pistons at tdc but the cams out of kilter (or in kilter in some cases) whereby the valves are very possibly not going to play ball regarding where they're at (if you know what I mean). Then it comes down to having experience x-ray vision to know what is what. I prefer leaving the crank out of time altogether with 1 at about 3cm below tdc before bolting down the head - that way nothing can clash as you torque the head down. I then carefully put everything into time starting with the cams. Dunno if I explained that right/made an ounce of sense, but if you have the pistons at tdc, it can smoosh valves as you fit the head.. I prefer timing it all up once the heads on - which does require knowing what is doing what, but avoids loads of problems.. If you follow. :-) I dunno do I even follow the way I explained that. :-)
@@jamesward5721 of course I understand you James, I sometimes do the same. It depends on my head on a specific day. Whatever it takes to not get in the soup 😂😂😂😂

Done many of them got another one here in France with an overheating issue I’m not 100% it’s the head gasket removed the thermostat core still gets hot but not much circulation put a camera up the waterpump and looks like it’s ok got me a touch stumped
@ yes and a pressure test and a leak of test so I’ve bitten the bullet new pump new thermostat been back flushed and I’ll see if it’s fixed failing that it’s a head gasket but for the life of me I can’t find any thing wrong it starts on the button and runs very well bizarre but I’ll let you know as there’s loads of those 1.2 16v engines out there
Yeah no need to skim the head, there was no heat damage so no possible warping, new gasket and new bolts in the right sequence should be fine. I hope your customer understands the effort to do this, you've saved that engine and car for them!
@@tomcurran65 this was a new customer as others didn’t want to do it. I sometimes prefer one big job rather than 15 smaller ones. But that’s just me 🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️
Peter great job. That car is seriously neglected by its owner. A shame really. It will be back in the garage soon enough with something else. I bet it has missed a few oil change intervals in its life.
@@the_retired_mechanic I actually never equate value to cost. We have cars to get from point A to point B. And I believe we should keep cost of achieving this as low as possible. And very often repair is less expensive than replacement, especially when you know your car V’s getting someone else throw away 🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️

Very nice video again. What about pistons?
@@zodiatti1825 they weren’t damaged and generally don’t but always do a good visual check just to confirm 😉👍👍
No point skimming it if it got no heat, not a bad yoke to do a head on either, keep up the good work!

I guess because 2nd hand car prices are still high its a viable repair. Still not cheap to rebuild them engines hey Peter.?
