I have always thought of the D.Va as ahead of its time with its monocoque, streamlined fuselage and spinner. Surprised to learn that such a beautiful design really wasn't that fast, although it sure looks like it should be.
Man. You can tell he lives and breathes these historical planes. And it's super cool the way he puts so much effort in to making sure the crowd notices all the had work of the builders every time. Such beautiful machines and the work that goes in to putting them just right and origional. I might be wrong but from the video it sounded like he didn't even have an air speed indicator of any modern sort in it, just a tach as it would have been built. That's some reall commitment there too keeping it all origional, I would think most people would retrofit some modern additions to a plane like this. But then again he probably has about the most hours in these early era planes than anyone else alive, so I'd thinks his senses are more calibrated than most instruments would be. Supper cool stuff, id love to go up in something like that one day if I ever got the chance
Herr Schreder must be well pleased that His beautiful Albatros is breathing fire in Florida! You videos never fail to entertain and inform! Bravo Herr Weeks!
I really love Kermit. A great sense of humor, very friendly and answers every question to the best of his knowledge even if that question may seam silly. Being in Wyoming I doubt I'll ever get the chance to met him, but If I ever make it down to Florida for any reason, I will make Fantasy of Flight a stop for sure!.
Ah come on, it's only 31 hours by car in light traffic, I've got the atlantic ocean in the way from the west of Ireland. Your spot on though kermit is a legend
@El Guapo mas macho lol, thanks bud. Haven't posted anything in a long time. So much to take care of in real life. Hopefully I can get back to it but thanks
@@jollyrogerhobbies2386 hahahaha, good man yourself, you gave me a good laugh this Monday morning as I was starting work for the day. Just subbed to your channel.
Thanks for sharing your Albatros D.Va beauty with us Kermit. It was nice to see your association with New Zealand via Sir Peter, which is where I live . They sure made that engine purr. Normally they cough and splutter (well the ones I saw at Warbirds over Wanaka did). And indeed it was a piece of Art. I also enjoyed the Q&A and 'look-over' information. Thanks again.
Hi Kermit, By Danish measures, you are a braggart, but a good one :-) Your attitude would never work in Denmark, but you are doing good work for us that love ancient airplanes. Keep it up, - we love you for what you do My friends and are all looking forward to the next update on the Bf108 JD
Great show, Kermit! I am thinking of my grandfather, who flew the Albatros ( among other planes) in WW I. Can‘t be a bad plane, or I wouldn‘t be there😂
I miss FoF a lot, had my yearly passes and visited 4-5 times a year. I have spent many hours of enjoyment there and what Kermit shared with us all. If you haven't seen it and your a WWI era plane person..."Four Years of Thunder". Its an excellent documentary of the age of flight during WWI. You can find it on here on UA-cam.
Thanks Kermit . You're pretty trusting allowing so many to get intimate with that jewel of an aircraft . And was that your Marauder in the background ? Now that IS a handful ! Top drawer as always . Thanks Kermit.
Amazing balls of Krupt Steel Kermie and your group crew from 2013, I would drive from Houston now to see this in 2021 Kermie, we need to see the collection up in the air once again ! Saw a WWI start up and you flying the 'Dragonfly' on my 4 random visits back in the day, was based in Nigeria so a $$$ visit each time, there were 5 of us, Disney was the unofficial reason for visits to Florida haha.
Great video, very cool aircraft, liked how you discussed it all with the guys afterwards. That was a great deal you made with Peter Blake, bet you'd happily lend your Lancaster if he wanted to re-make The Dambusters!
You mean Sir Peter Jackson by the by. Sir Peter is already working on the 'modern take' of The Dambusters. He has already taken a lot of film with an Avro Lancaster Bomber in front of a 'Green Screen'. The problem is, that he has to wait for British Secrecy Laws to expire, before he can finish the entire movie. eg it was only released that the 'bouncing bomb' was Backspun at 500 rpm to make it bounce. So I am hoping enough time has passed already, to allow him to proceed, while he has the filming rights. The actual bigger story is the lead up to the mission itself. I am sure it will be better than his usual production, because of his love of planes. Also, the last 'Dambuster' serviceman was Les Munroe, who gave insight to Sir Peter Jackson for his film. Les died in 2014 at Tauraunga NZ at the age of 94. So only the archives remain of this controversial event of WWII.
David David It'll be fascinating to see a re-make of the Dambusters and yes I had heard it may be in the pipeline. I remember reading Les Munro had died back when it happened, but understand there is another surviving Dambuster, from Operation Chastise, he's the last surviving member, Squadron Leader George 'Johnny' Johnson DFM, bomb aimer on Lancaster AJ-T and he celebrated his 99th birthday last week.
@@mattharte7334 Thanks for that news about Johnny's 99th birthday. Am enjoying the YT interviews about his life. And like you, I can't wait for the movie. Maybe Sir Peter is waiting for the 16th May 2021 to mark 78 years since the raid?
Oh by the way make sure he keeps pumping enough for one to it Kermit you take care of yourself you hear me I am one of your biggest fans I've been with you for flower five years maybe more I can't keep up with the videos but yeah I'm there with you hopefully I'll see the Fantasy Flight of dreams come true
Oh by the way I've been watching you what for 4 years now 4 years watching your ups and downs disappointment all the other stuff I'm a good fan I love what you do and what you trying to do just take care of yourself we'll see what happens next
Pilots during that era were men. Men who were very talented and gifted, because as you said they were along for the ride. Now add the fact that someone was probably shooting at them, now you have a totally new type of pilot. The astronauts are talented in their own way, but these people really had the "right stuff".
Wow, what an advancement over the Le Rhone rotary powered WWI airplanes that only had a blip-switch on the stick for a throttle. What this a private invitation only event? I would love to see these planes up close, but I understand your facility is now (or was) closed to the public.
While the Albatros D series may be some of the finest pursuit scouts ever built, I'm quite curious as to how Mr. Weeks feels about the Pfalz D.XII and Fokker D.VIII.
@Kermit Weeks you mentioned that Peter Jackson put a Mercedes D.III engine in this plane, but you didn't specify which variant was it. Does it have the original 160HP variant, the 180HP D.IIIa variant, or the 200HP D.IIIau variant?
In the video, Kermit mentioned that it had been altered to a 200 HP output from 180 HP. And he mentioned changing the propeller to compensate for that. Don't know if that helps in any way?
I know at one point you were having trouble with a couple of your WWI aircraft, was this one of them? Is it ready to fly now,or does it still need a bit of work before it goes on its next adventure?
Evening Mr Weeks, Wow what an amazing aeroplane... What a deal, well done. I was interested in the manual hand crank mag for self starting, I think early Rolls Royce cars could self start when warm by altering the mag advance/ retard through its range and that would produce a restart. Moving on, I have a 1946 vintage Fordson tractor, do you think Mr Jackson might do a deal like yours I'm sure I can find something he might like, just wondering if you might put a good word in for me 🤣 Thank you for the video.

I'm surprised the drag wires vibrated as much as they did on the ground. One would expect them to be taut.
Love that sound

I really hope one day Sir Peter can reboot the classic BBC television series "Wings" that focused on RFC recon pilots in the early war.

watch out for flutter on those wing tips
No worry, it has support struts like the Austrian built ones. (From the strut to the leading edge of the lower wings).
