This was a great listen. I don’t think I’m going out on a limb saying Alex is the smartest ‘filmfulencer’ (😂) out there. Every film related video of his feels like a fun chemistry lesson. My first roll of Phoenix wasn’t great - my bad for trying to shoot landscapes over summer with it - but I’m looking forward to trying again with some portraits and streetscapes in duller, less contrasty conditions.
Just one point to make on Kodak HIE and EIR: my understanding that while demand for both had definitely tanked by the mid 2000s, particularly commercial/government use of EIR which had been mostly replaced by digital imaging by then, the move towards IR-based QC in Kodak’s film manufacturing processes around that time. Not so much an issue with 720-780nm sensitive films apparently that are still happily made today, but clearly an issue with the extended sensitivity that both EIR and HIE had (into the 950nm range). Which doesn’t bode well for Aerochrome ever coming back, even if Kodak could sell fresh stuff for north of $100 a roll easily.

@Shaka1277 Hi Alex, my interest is in Black and White. The how and why a chemical does what it does to film and paper is still a fascination to me. And so any conversation about the how and why a process works or doesn't work would definitely be of interest. 👍

Oh, you have a PhD in chemistry! Guess that explains your technical approach and how well you explain everything! I always love videos that are focusing on the more technical aspects and to a greater depth than most others have gone into. Photochemistry is just infinitely fascinating and I love learning about it all different places around the internet!
Ron is a famous example of losing a special individual with regard to the science of film, looking through any thread he's commented on is always a bit somber, but at the same time always educational. He even mentioned this himself, that with the downsizing of research groups, so much potential was lost.
That's why it makes me happy to see these efforts _and_ to see them succeed.

Thank you once again :) Photochemistry is absolutely FASCINATING to me. I still remember the day I was reading a paper and saw a (quite forced) reference to the use of the silver salt in photography, and the feeling of awe that awoke in me.
I never had the pleasure of speaking with Ron online, let alone meeting him, but I bet there are dozens if not hundreds equally as passionate and knowledgeable as he was. Each of them who passes is a tremendous loss.
