I bugged out in 2022. Got a nice homestead going now and even building a new house out here. I warned you guys not to become boiling frogs. The truth is if you big out when shtf will not make it. Last winter I was trying to attach gasket with pine sap because I didn't have any seal. What's the humidity at your bug out location? If it's high you will get black mold everywhere and in the forest, it's humid. I tried using silky saws exclusively off the start. My tendons in my elbows ached for a year after that first winter. I use an electric chainsaw now. World of difference. Food is by far the biggest issue though. If you plan to grow and hunt your food you are probably not going to make it unless you have that tested and established before shtf. I planted a big potatoe garden. You are right @user- . Figure 2000 calories per day per person (730,000 cal/yr/person). That is a ton of food. 1 Pound of potatoes is less than 400 calories. So, almost a ton of potatoes per person would do it. Outside, wildlife will eat more of your crops than you do. A big greenhouse is the best bet. It is also easier to secure than field crops. Nate, it's NOT too late to plant more crops, especially if you plant in the greenhouse! Gotta think, there are plenty of veggies that simply DO NOT like heat: basically, all your brassicas and leafy greens! In fact, thebest spinach i ever grew was sown in a poly hoop tunnel in mid-october where it had enough of the fall left to get a few inches high; it kinda stopped growing through the dead of winter, but come march it took off like a rocket and matured before the bugs were even out! Idk what zone you're in, but we're 5a/5b and I'm still planting things like peas, beets, potatoes (had some sprout before we got a chance to eat them, may as well try to get something out of them, right?) and greens! During winter you are probably going to have to clear snow that slides off using a machine like a tractor. You should think about placing some boards to cover the bottom 2 ft or so. It will prevent you from accidentally cutting a hole in the side of the greenhouse with the snow removal blade
Awesome Nate. It would have been cool digging a few feet down and putting a greenhouse on top. This method helps keep temperatures stable, reduces heating and cooling costs, and protects from wind. It also extends the growing season and saves water. Plus, it's more energy-efficient and can blend nicely into the landscape. Just make sure to manage drainage and ventilation properly.
You can have a 4 season greenhouse if you install GAT system (ground air transfer) very simple if you just look into it. My husband built one for us and it is amazing!

Just curious, before becoming a UA-camr, and you were just a prepper, what’d you do for a living? Hard to achieve your level of preparedness on an average income…
Great! Love it. The fact that you mentioned calories...prepping garden means exactly that...focus on the calories...starchy root veg mostly, squash, corn and beets. The awesome tasty tomatoes, cukes and salad greens should be the lowest priority....tasty but too watery to live on. Learning to grow and over-winter potatoes should be every prepper's priority in my humble opinion. Of course, we could just be growing them for Justy in the end.
You can use the greenhouse for wind energy since they always have convection currents rising up. Put the "windmill" portion as close to the top as you can, have an opening for the bladed portion and either a small platform at the top to tend to the moving parts, or a stable area at ground level to do maintenance. Greenhouses nearly always have a wind current rising up from convection currents. They'd probably have more output than solar.
I would agree that convection "wind" would be nearly useless for sustainable energy production. He said the place is windy. Just put the windmill out in the wind. Don't do unnecessarily complicated nonsense.
@@MaritimeHomesteader What was your experience and what kind of wind turbine vs solar panel did you compare? Has there been any design changes that have changed output?
@@thewiredfox2691 First, the windmill blades would be in the wind. The moving parts that a person would work on would be in a protected shelter - a greenhouse in this case. Having electricity at the site inside the greenhouse helps with pumping water, moving it from one area to another, the grow lights, seedling heating mats. All the old farmer's windmills in my area have/had buildings erected at the base to make working on them much easier. Are you saying that there's nothing around the base of the windmill and that working on them in bad weather is easy because.... why?
Great greenhouse. Don't you think the wooden foundation will rot in 3 years, even pressure impregnated? I do. I would definitely make a solid concrete foundation: it won't rot and it will also weigh down the greenhouse.

Plant herbs and green onions around your home or property border😊Raise your own 🐓 for eggs and meat & 🐄/🐑 You only need ¼ of an acre to sustain a family of 5 with fresh produce. Extra acreage you can establish a community garden! And still have your own plots for your favorite produce! Get books on how to can your produce because the internet will not work for us to get any information...
@jilbertb keep certain areas designated for farmland and what's to divide really in the apocalypse? Community will have to defend their territory together anyways
Organic does not mean heritage. Heritage seeds will grow what is on the package and seeds can be saved from the harvest for next year and reliably continue to grow correct. Organic (at least in the US) only indicates HOW the seeds were produced. A hybrid seed can be grown Organically, yet not grow viable seed from the crop. A heritage seed or a hybrid seed can be grown organically or using chemical fertilizer, weed killers and pesticides. So plant ONLY HERITAGE SEED if you plan to save seed for the coming years.
Hey Nate, put some black 55 gallon barrels full of water in them and the passive solar will extend your season. Also, you could use a couple of your camping wood stoves in the greenhouse during the worst months.
Look into chicken manure. And straw that mixed together on the floor will decompose and create heat during the winter. There's a famous guy who had a fish farm set up in Milwaukee. Lucky that was well known for greenhouse shut ups. If he's still active you should talk to him.
Rabbits in cages, their bodies are over 100 degrees and will help heat the building! Not to mention that their manure can be used immediately as well 😊
@@librasun123 and rabbits are easy to take care of. And relatively easy to butcher and cook. They multiply pretty quick but that is where the real care needs to take place. Building the rabbit boxes is your biggest investment. Do that part right. Easy to clean daily box design s the key.
I like your greenhouse, especially the added height. But why didn't you go the next step and integrate a thick insulated solid stone wall on the north side to make your greenhouse a solar passive one?
Nice greenhouse Nate, wise to anchor it, poly panels are the way to go plus being arched will help reduce snow load. I would imagine you will have temp-controlled vents for hotter days if not something to look at but considering its 16' high that in itself will help from getting too hot. If needed due to Canadian winters, you could use your tent stove to help heat up. Stay Safe & Good Luck were going to need it.

Great Vid Nate! Super fun to watch! I’m getting my greenhouse up soon also. Just a 12x20 converted heavy duty carport. I like your idea of driving post in. My ground is too rocky (maine) so I will bury mine parallel 2 or three feet deep.with chains attached. I also have some 2 foot long super heavy duty spiral anchors on all corners and halfway down, the sides. I bought all my wood 4 years ago before prices went nuts. It’s just me alone but I’ve built a pretty nice homestead here, with meat Chickens, a Rabbitry, laying hens, turkeys, and a very large garden. I do canning, freeze dry, and put up as much food as possible. If I as a older woman alone can do this anyone can! My grown sons do help me with the heavy stuff, when they can. I was born for this lifestyle and have done this since a child and taught by my mom. But the key is to just do it! Just start somewhere and build on it. Keep the great videos coming, you are not just a candle but a but a powerful spotlight in the dark!!!

When we build horticultural polyhouses, the edge down to the floor along the long straight sides, are made with rolled up poly over shadecloth sides, allowing you to get ventilation in the hot months and not cook your crops, whilst keeping insects out
Nate! Please always link in any of your GREENHOUSE videos, that original green house you visited and filmed where one wall kept the house warm in winter through sunlight storage.
Ohio township government came and stole and destroyed the buildings and contents at my house. So much for stockpiling food, supplies, and everything else for sustaining life in difficult times.
Nate, you should build dig-in (underground) greenhouse, considering your weather, it lasts longer, its warmer, its cheaper, its covert, its just more fun...
Why plant in outside garden beds when you have land and soil right there on your property to plant rows and rows of garden vegetables? That is what the first settlers did and were able to grow enough potatoes, carrots etc. to store for the whole winter. They had root cellars, not green houses that kept them fed through the cold months.
Soil has a lot of rocks do to glacial ice during the ice ages. may also be set up to keep voles out (presuming he installed hardware cloth underneath the boxes. He does have row crops as well.
@@guytech7310 I grow my vegetables in a garden that was used by my husbands great grandmother and his mother. I didn’t know it was legal in Canada
Medicinal I’m sure 😉
I'm down with the miscellaneous herbs🤣🤣🤣😎🤫
My respect went up. He really is prepared.
He's a smart man! Besides just for medicinal purposes, he can make rope, clothes, paper, etc!
Let's not forget, a tangible tradeable product.
Great!
@GnomeInPlaid
They definitely won’t have more output than solar. 100% guaranteed
I would agree that convection "wind" would be nearly useless for sustainable energy production.
He said the place is windy. Just put the windmill out in the wind. Don't do unnecessarily complicated nonsense.
Wind turbine are shit for the price and moving part. Better buy more battery and panels
Thanks Nate. It was good to see you and the family and the fun
WHATS UR IDEA TO KEEP GRITTERS OUT AROUND THE FOUNDATION? MICE, SMALL RODENTS?
I would suggest using plywood on the lower part of greenhouse sides to buffer against winter snow. Your greenhouse looks impressive. Good job.
Fast yes, but nothing beets experience. Especially personal dirty hands, boots on the ground. Happy learning personally still enjoying it
I loved to see you working with your family. We are starting our homestead in southern Alberta, so it is great to see what you are doing. We put together a prefab Costco shed...so I give you huge respect for tackling that greenhouse! Loved this video, thanks for more great content. 💚
those miscellaneous herbs will be worth a fortune when theres none left.
I've been able to make one legal-sized harvest (4), last 2 yrs. Airtight bags with 67% moisture packs did real well.
Way more than gold and you can eat it 🤣
I've got herb for sale 😅

@@fpstina a medicine garden IS ESSENTIAL.. seriously.
Consider vertical garden. Poatoes in dirt towers with straw. And aeroponics towers for tomatoes.
We grow peppers, broccoli, lettuce, out of the hydro towers, they do amazing in these.

Glad to see he's happy and healthy!❤
I built their 34x10 foot one last year 95% solo. My husband helped when needed. It’s an amazing greenhouse and has withstood its first Alberta winter with zero issues.

That Greenhouse will produce a lot of food and help out immensely if things get real bad.

Farmers used to just wear overalls, now they have to wear protective suits with respirators. Why are they greedy to kill people slowly?Extra acreage would be great for extra farm animals. Get with your cousins to buy land with more acreage and divide it for cheaper than yall could individually for a smaller piece of parcel😉(1acre/30k) or (10acres/100k 10 cousins - 10k/acre) Community garden;
Vegetables to grow:
1, potatoes 🥔 2, beans 🫘 3, carrots 🥕 4, peppers 🌶 5, tomatoes 🍅 6, lettuce 🥬7, onions 8, garlic 9, spinach 10, green beans/peas 🫛 11, cucumber🥒
Fruit to grow: 1, apple 🍎 2, plums 3, pears🍐4, grape 🍇 5, blueberry 🫐 6, raspberry 7, blackberry 8, strawberry 🍓 9, watermelon 🍉
Don't forget to grow your favorites on your own parcel!
Meat and poultry:
1, 🐔 🐥 🍗 🥚
2, 🐑 🥩(wool for pillows/socks)
3, 🐄 🥩🥛
Buy organic seeds, so you can use the seeds from the produce into next years garden through "seed-saving."
Plant 3-5 fruit trees of what is possible to grow in your region(apples, pears, peaches, plums, cherries, etc) and berry bushes(blueberry, blackberry, raspberry, gooseberry, etc).
I don’t think quarter acre is big enough to support fam of 5, unless particularly fertile soil....
@louiseeckert1574 that and having kids under 2 years which dont require to eat as much just yet lol which is why a community garden is a must
The cost of surveying the acreage to divide it is expensive.
Good job Nate...how wonderful to have all the resources and manpower to make this happen👏🏼👏🏼💜
Good advice no one ever takes.
Should have embedded some plastic tubing below the freeze line to keep it warm in winter.
Always read the directions first 😊
Nice greenhouse Nate, wise to anchor it, poly panels are the way to go plus being arched will help reduce snow load. I would imagine you will have temp-controlled vents for hotter days if not something to look at but considering its 16' high that in itself will help from getting too hot. If needed due to Canadian winters, you could use your tent stove to help heat up.
Stay Safe & Good Luck were going to need it.

hello Nate good video, nice change watching you work and seeing your family and not a lot of depressing war stuff. with the height of the greenhouse being so high are you not worried about keeping it warm
Interesting concept and in theory an excellent project. Unfortunately too big a job for two little time. Tick-tock tick-tock Ratatat boom. Even without bombed the cities would explode outward into the suburbs the suburbs would be overrun by the hordes of hungry and desperate. And yet the movement will still be outward into the rural area. Good haul dude ,
Great Vid Nate!
That young fella is fast 👍🏽
You should have left ur corner post long . Not cut em off. I find they come in handy for interior builds. Like shelves or whatever else you can think of. Just a thought. And that poly for the roofing will bend better if you hear it up a bit . Propane grass torch helpful. Not burn it just heat it till plyable
WTH ? Early Sunday video thanks Nate
When we build horticultural polyhouses, the edge down to the floor along the long straight sides, are made with rolled up poly over shadecloth sides, allowing you to get ventilation in the hot months and not cook your crops, whilst keeping insects out
Nice to see you having some fun and love you incorporated the kiddos into the process. Keep up the strong work 💪

There are no problems with voles but there are some rocks, but they don't interfere with the rototilling in the spring. You can grow more beets, carrots and potatoes in a regular garden plot.
