Glad to see Dan Edwards there but no Reuben Morgan-Williams don't know how he's still not been selected, he's put in some great performances for the ospreys

Anscombe had a bang on the knee so maybe he could be called in after another week or so? It does seem crazy the fly half situation in this squad, Ben Thomas is a cracking player at Centre and often carries the Cardiff back line but he’s not a 10. It’s a tall order but maybe Gats is thinking throw Dan in the deep end and hopefully he’ll do well under the pressure.
Yeah possible. The Gloucester coach said Anscombe was back fit for the scarlets game but they just decided to give them a rest. I wouldn’t put it past them to call him in in a week or two though, like you said
I actually have no worries about Edwards stepping up to the mark. He’ll be great. BUT, I really think this should have been the back’s squad: 9s Tomos Reuben MW Hardy 10s Edwards Jarrod Evans Anscombe 12s Thomas James 13s Roberts Llewellyn Wings Adams Dyer Murray Hathaway 15s Rogers Williams
Totally agree with regards to Dan Edward. I think throwing him in the deep end will go one of two ways: either he’ll cope and go on to do the marvellous things we all know that he might be capable of or he’ll get totally marmalised and lose confidence (and that’s never happened before in this squad 🙄) and maybe even injured. The point about Tshiunza is an interesting one. I think he’s was decent in the summer but I think he’s better if your starting him with his work rate. Off the bench he’s doesn’t have the same impact
be honest think this is gonna go one of two ways either dan Edwards and I'm a massive ospreys fan and love him to bits but people seem to think he's going to be the next jesus christ and I think he's just to young and behind to week of pack he'd probably do fine behind a french or Irish pack but i dont know about him trying to controll and international game.
Yeah, I don’t doubt that he has all the minerals to be a top quality player like you, but I worry if he’s being simply set up to fail playing in this team
I am happy to see Freddie Thomas and Teddy williams in the squad along with Dafydd Jenkins and Will Rowlands, some decent sized second rows who arent afraid to get stuck in, the forward pack for me is looking half decent apart from tight head. I agree with the lack of out right 10s in the squad, why hasnt Jarrod Evans been considered? Has he rubbed Gatland up the wrong way?? 🤔, the rest of the backline looks rather good individually, whether they will blend or not and play as a team we will see. Fance will be a real tough one especailly for the first game 😬
Great analysis, Christian. Lots of interesting selections here. For me, the most concerning thing is our front row. I bet the French front rowers are chomping at the bit to get a start in that opening game. They are going to absolutely demolish our front 3 and it’s going to be impossible for us to get any good-forward. Great to see Dan Edwards in the squad. I imagine he will get a lot of playing time! Back 3 look ok. Centres could go well. I’m glad to see Joe Roberts back in the mix! Scrum half is probably our most settled position so those picks are alright for me. Back row could be ok. Second rows are small and lightweight. Gotta use our mobility there! I hope Tshuinza is picked as lock rather than back row. Front row is utter trash. I can’t see this squad winning any games but I’ll be content as long as we see improvements on the summer and autumn.
Got once Sam I’m not as positive as you are about the squad. I’m not impressed with the centres unless we see Roberts and James as the partners for the whole 5 games but we will defo see Watkin and A another Scrum will get mashed and we’re throwing in 2 inexperienced fly halves to play behind a team that can’t go forward. Gats has to go for me I am glad Edwards is in there though and Mee
I actually think the back row is the only area of the squad where we have no issues. If Tshiunza is a Lock, Wainwright, Faletau, Reffell, Morgan and Botham is looking good. Other than that, agree with you Sam, front row is worrying…
Morning Christian, an interesting point for you, wales are the only rugby union from the home nations and france that dont employ a full time age level coach! Surely we need a bridge between age level including u21s and the full international squad, i know this is the reason the u21s are playing this series of games against a mix of acadamy sides, but it needs to continue after their 6ns, may even stop players going to England!
Good morning to you That’s a really interesting observation actually. Not something I knew. Certainly has been an area of concern over the years so makes you wander doesn’t it 😬
I completely agree with you Christian - Gatland has lost his mind. I think we need the white coats to come and take him away. How on earth can your first choice fly half be Thomas when you have Anscombe available? How on earth can the backup to Thomas be an uncapped 21 year old? For Christ sake, we know Edwards is mustard, but ease the poor kid in surely? And by easing in, I would suggest a summer tour or some autumn internationals against fellow tier 2 nations. If Thomas twists his ankle in the French game warmup, your throwing Edwards in for his debut against France - away! I think losing Lake and Griffin is massive - so much so that I think our scrum will get marmalised by every nation, but thank god Elliot Dee is back, which means hopefully we wont lose every single lineout now. Cannot believe Cam Winnett has been left out. That is mental. I am however, excited to see how Tom Rogers, Blair Murray, Josh Adams, Josh Hathaway, Ellis Mee, and Eddie James all get on.
@@TheWelshSportsPodcast i dunno about you, i just feel he's going through the motions. Where is Wimbush? where is Lockett? Where is K.Teipulotu? Surely, 1 of his aims is to get these dual qualified players on board christian?
Thanks for this, good to get your perspective on this. I had some concerns when I saw the squad earlier this afternoon. Feels like he's made a few sharp 180 turns here considering his previous selections. Not sure how we build for the future if we are giving young players like Cam Winnett and Max Llewellyn a go and then shutting them out of the squad. Surely we have to move forward and get these boys up to speed with international rugby?
Glad to see Dan Edwards in the squad and hope to see him play, but also do not want a scenario that if he does not have a great game that he is then overly criticised. Feel sorry for Rio Dyer. The poor performances of the Dragons has no doubt played a part in him missing out. He is always committed and just does not get the opportunities. Again it shows what a class player Wainwright is.
He's building for the future. And the next world cup not only that he has to think about size you've only got to look at s Africa and the size of them that'll make a difference.
I just think Edwards would benefit from having a senior mentor in the squad to help him through a game week, ect And leaving out Llewellyn and Winnett does it make sense if you’re planning for the future?
@TheWelshSportsPodcast I'm not sure he needs it tbh, it's possible that gatland has seen all he needs to to back Edwards and is just looking to see if he's currently ready to step up. He may also judge it to be more important to build depth in other positions rather than taking multiple fly halves.
I would have preferred to see Jarrod Evans over Lloyd but I’ll be interested to see how Lloyd plays at 10 over the next couple of months with Costelow injured
I don't know what medication Gatland is on. It's obviously skewed his judgement (since he's cone back to be fair). No RMW. No Jarod Evans. Just wait for Morgan Morse. He will be a class act!
Anscombe decision is really concerning, even if he’s not going to make the next World Cup he’d be good for Dan Edwards to learn off. Could come back to haunt us that. Happy for Sam Parry, hope he gets the start over Dee. Max Llewelyn id of liked to have seen but will trust Gatlands call that he knows what he’s doing with that one, Ruben Morgan Williams though I can’t get on board with
Yeah, I feel bad for Ruben been playing his socks off all season and had a good couple of years. There’s obviously something that Gats doesn’t like about him.
Great isn't it! You might have a potential good number 10 coming through, only been starting regional for a season, hasn't looked amazing but promising! And what does gatland do but stick him in there with the same midfield that failed before! Jarrod Evans for me every day!!! Fair play, good pod cast chris
Very kindly to say thank you👍🏼 Yeah, I agree with everything you said to be honest , it doesn’t make a lot of sense to me, but I think we’ll see Ben Thomas playing most of the six Nations out of position again 🤷🏻♂️
Hi Christian, A bit of a mish mash of players, good to see a couple of experience players in the squad but no Jarrod Evans and Gareth Anscombe not a good move in my opinion. We need to get Ellis Mee I think he is a good player and don't wan't to lose him to England as he can play for either country, it was bad enough last year when we lost out on Immanual Faye Wobasso who is Welsh born. Lets see if Warren Gatland has the right mix this time, we got to have a win this time, I hope. It's not going to be easy on the commentators shouting Williams passes to Williams on to Thomas then to Williams to Thomas and on to Thomas back to Williams and Tomas scores...................lol. As always a great rugby review catch you soon Take care
Yeah, I didn’t think of the name situation. it’s going to be awkward when I do my game reviews trying to make sure I say the right name😂 I think mish mash is a good way of putting it and I’m with you not including either of those experienced outside half in the squad is a mistake to me Thanks, mate. Catch you on the next one.
Some baffling decisions but a backrow of Jac Morgan, Toby Faletau and Aaron Wainwright could be alot of fun. Squad does scream trying to eke out a win in Italy round 2 to try and ease some pressure though. Daf x
Yeah, couldn’t agree more Daff. Still can’t drop my head around the number 10 jersey. Looks like we’re gonna see “the best back in Wales” being played out of position again.🤷🏻♂️
@TheWelshSportsPodcast Yep. Very strange. And as you said in the video, writing is on the wall for a Tompkins and Watkin partnership in the midfield. Which isn't the most inspiring partnership.
That was the backrow v Fiji in the 2023 World cup. Hope Faletau can roll back the years here, can't see him making another RWC or with the Lions but an absolute Welsh legend.
What a load of crap ! Look at the physique on Cian Healy .Our boys are not fit or strong compared to other nations .I see a lot of these guys training in the off season and believe they are pitiful to watch in fact embarrassing. No pride or respect in themselves .
It’s just his selection is out of pure desperation. He had a chance to develop him in the past and he never really gave him much of an opportunity. Now he’s reaping what he sowed
I totally agree with you christian. An uncapped youngster & ben thomas as out only 10's is baffling? Dan Edwards will definitely be one for the future & i'm totally on board with him being in the squad to get familiar with the international set up as you discussed in your 10's video. But what the heck is gatland thinking? That's he's gonna throw a 21 year old in for his debut away to france??? Utter nonsense!!! I'm similarly bemused as to how cam winott, the one bright spark for me in the last 12 months, is dropped from the squad totally! Gatland's lost his mind for me with this squad & as such i'm already bracing for a torrid 6N. Cheers as always christian.
Yeah, I agree, mate. I think he’s lost his marbles completely. Everything he does and says is contradictory these days. I have no doubt that Edwards is a solid player and can succeed at this level, but my worry is he’s been set up to feel playing in this team in its current iteration Cheers mate 👍🏼
Agreed that the backs selection is very odd, he almost seems like he's trying to be sacked? Going to be very tough for Edwards to make his debut behind a pack that's going backwards and no in form players outside him. Feel that Anscombe should have been included despite his age, he'd be a good mentor for Edwards if nothing else. Not sure why Bevan keeps being selected despite not playing that well for Cardiff or Wales, RMW is a better player. Not including Llewelyn is actually baffling.
The conspiracy minded person in me makes me wonder if he just wants to be sacked and get that severance payment and retire off into the sunset🤷🏻♂️ Wholeheartedly agree about your Anscombe point there’s no way Edwards wouldn’t benefit from having a player like him around in training
No Llewellyn, and only 1 flyhalf is a bit mental... Is Winnett injured? At least the back 5 is looking strong and I like the look of the back 3 even though there's no Dyer, that doesn't concern me too much. No Winnett though I don't get and where's Ioan Lloyd??
No Winnett was just admitted from the squad due to his defence apparently. “Building for the future” but they pick Liam Williams over a young improving fullback.🤷🏻♂️
@TheWelshSportsPodcast I agree mate. I suppose Rogers and Murray can cover 15 but I don't get why they don't at least have Ioan Lloyd in the squad to cover both 10 and 15.
France away needs some effort Williams, Hathaway, Watkin, Tompkins, Adams, Edwards, Tomos, Morgan, Faletau, Wainwright, Jenkins, Rowlands, Thomas, Parry, Thomas I can't fit Ben Thomas in as starting 10, on bench to cover 10 and centres else he comes in at 12 for Tompkins. This business about 'no credible offer' for WillGriff John being eligible, about sums it up. Bench: Assirati, Dee, Smith, Tshinuza (last chance this year), Botham, Bevan, Rogers, Ben Thomas Edwards could be goalkicker. Funny squad
Very funny squad I like your team but I have no interest in seeing Nick Tompkins play for Wales regardless of the state of things. I think he may got Watkins 12 with Roberts
Exicited to see D.Edwards in the squad But very surprised he is the only flyhalf and G.Anscombe and J.Evans have been omitted along with the inform M.Llewellyn Also dont really agree with T.Faletau's selection as he won't make it to the 2027 RWC This squad is more experienced and reeks of looking for a WIN any WIN NOW And not looking to the future A complete change from last year
Yeah, it’s all a bit scatter gun. He’s left out Anscombe because he wants to build for the future. But then he’s left out Winnett for Liam Williams So it makes no sense to me
Great work mate as always. You do have to wonder what is in Gatlands head or what his plans are. The usual nonsense explanations and excuses and bizarre selections. Just going through the list of stuff I'd change; Winnett out Liam in (despite lack of games and poor form) Llewellyn out Tomkins in is just daft Rowlands still there and not someone younger and playing better like Rhys Davies or Fender (Rowlands will play over Teddy or Freddie sadly) Bevan rather than Morgan-Williams makes no sense (even though I love Bevan at Cardiff) Faletau age and constant injuries/niggles over someone like Cracknell/Morgan Morse/Morgan Morris (big love for Toby forever though) Watkin still there and will play over younger more exciting options like James and Roberts (worth a look at Macs Page?) Evan Lloyd would have been nice to maybe get Coghlan into camp instead and have a look Willgriff over well any other 3 out there is another bizarre one Only picking one 10 who is very young and a new cap is bold and will mean playing Ben at 10 out of position again No Dyer although wales aren't struggling for back 3 options so maybe the least of Gats crimes Dunno what I expect really after all this time but this'll be Gats last squad anyway so get behind Wales as always and hope they can sneak a win from somewhere although I'm not holding my breath
Yeah, hard to argue with anything you’ve said mate. There’s a lot of odd decisions across-the-board and I feel like he’s just gonna go with the most basic boring squad. He can lose all five games and then ride off into the sunset with a big severance package and a smile on his face. Just my thoughts 😂
100% agree. He clearly doesn't care anymore and is just waiting for a payout. He even criticised the review of his performance in the autumn basically saying the players and WRU don't know as much as he does. I doubt he even knows who half the players I've mentioned are cos I guarantee he isnt watching the URC week in week out
Jarred Evans. Sam Davies. Taine Basham. Rio Dyer. Cam Winnett. Max Llewellyn. Gareth Anscombe all should of been picked. Ireland have picken 49 players. Why are we pigeon holed into picking on 34 players?
In the past Gatlands’ M.O. has been to stick with certain players regardless of their form through thick and thin. And then suddenly make his mind up about them and literally NEVER pick them again no matter how well they perform. If he stays true to his track record, that has got to ring alarm bells for some of those absentees. But Gatlands’ behaviour has been a bit bizarre and unpredictable recently. The old Gatlands would NEVER have eaten humble pie and selected Sam Parry! I’ve got to say that there are aspects of this selection that seem a bit clueless and desperate. I’m a big fan of Dan Edwards, but I really wanted to see him left alone for a while to develop. It all seems a little bit like the early 90s. A generation of top talent ‘went north’ and a scatter gun approach to selection ensued which threw a lot of young talent under the bus, prematurely ending their careers. Players like Colin Stephens being a classic example.
Yeah, I think that’s a really well-made comment Rob. It’s all a bit over the place and it smacks of desperation with some of the selections like you said It’s all just a mess and I wonder like you setting up down Edwards to fail at the beginning of his career. To be honest, it feels like he’s trying to get himself sacked so he can get that severance package and sail off into the sunset.
Picking one 10 is mental, what if we get an injury. Llewellyn omission is crazy especially as he picked him in every game in the Autumns. Not trying many of the centres with only 2 backs on the bench (that worked out well). This selection just shows Gatland has lost it and has no long term plan.
With Gatland likely to go if we get a whitewash, I feel strangely disconnected. Let him go full on, in the direction he believes. If he’s got the edge as coach, he should come up with results but if not, we have the chance to move on. I’m looking forward to the likes of Edwards & Mee getting their chance, let’s see how it all goes
Anscombe and Williams both born in 1991. So Chicken is to old and we need to be looking at youngsters, but Sanjay is all good, so we ditch one of our most exciting and consistent youngsters.... the mind boggles!
So let's get the positives out the way the return of Morgan, Talupe Liam Adams Tomos and so on will be a boost in terms of experience and class, most if not all will be starting, but our weaknesses are still there, at centre tighthead and outside half, if we assume Ben gets the nod at 12 then another center partnership will start, I have no idea why Max has been dropped and Tomkins gets a place, one thing is for sure settled partnership's are successful. Moving on I'm pleased for Dan he looks the real deal, but would have been better served with Anscombe starting, other strange obmission, At right head we still have no prospect, I just hope we have somebody to anchor the scrum, this is a prime example where Wales have not progressed and other teams have. We should have a very good back row and good grafting locks, a decent loosehead and hooker, our back three should be experienced and dangerous, but it's the link between that's weak Tomos Williams aside, I wish the boys well but in all honesty out best chance may come at home against England, because in the past when Wales have been poor you could against the odds pull out a win over the red rose.
Yes, spot on Clive. I wonder if we see Watkin and Roberts in the centre again because Watkin has that familiarity with Edwards. Front row is a massive concern of mine though. If that isn’t steady, then we’re in big trouble.
Gatlands final ever squad as a coach is just as uninspiring as ever 😅 Although i am happy for Dan Edwards, he is gonna be under a lot of pressure being the only specialist 10.
I said that about his last squad, mate, so I’m not being too confident that he’s not gonna get a name another one in the future, especially given the fools we’ve gotten in charge😂
No disrespect to Edwards and Thomas as I think they are both incredible players but having a 21 year old uncapped fly half and a 12 who barley plays fly half is awful when it’s arguably the most important position.
Gatland failed at the Chiefs and has failed with Wales. The game has moved on and it’s time for Gatland to go. They’ll have a poor 6 nations and then the WRU will fire him. End of.
I will preface this by saying i watch Gloucester, and The welsh URC teams games, almost all of them, and just dont get why more players for teams that are more clutch, or winning more etc are not picked. I dont think scarlets are clutch at all, they love to barely lose games, and to a lesser extend cardiff. I would have loaded up on osprey players based on this reasoning. Which they havent won a bunch either but have injuries. I would have included Llewellyn, a guess anscombe is injured, and more ospreys guys like Reuben @ 9, maybe even Hardy also over Bevan, maybe Giles over Mee. I was going to complain about Mee being "just a guy" but i guess you cap him to prevent england cap, pulling a feyi waboso deal. And hes tall. When gloucester boatraced scarlets i knew they werent for real. Scarlets to me are like Dallas cowboys media loves them, ton of fans, but they cant win anything. Blair murray and i guess eddie were the only guys who could do anything, maybe ioan lloyd a little. I like parry over the some other options but he missed quite a few line outs that last game vs newcastle. I dont think they get the ball out wide enough to do anything so it almost doesnt matter whos capped in the backs IMO. If you look at the NFL playoffs the teams that win usually have the best QB, which i would equate to a 10 or maybe a 9, they have usually a top 10 offensive line, which welsh front 3 have been poorer, and usually a top 10 defense which i think gatland does t always pick for defense. So yeah im not expecting a bunch of winning, hope the young guys develop and dont get ruined. Especially dan edwards. My opinions, great analysis! I agree with 100% of everything you said
Jesus Jacob where do I even start with that one 😂 Yes, to argue with most of what you said. O do like Mee I think he’s got a lot of potential and he’s only 21 so I’m happy to get him in the squad and have a look at him Dallas Cowboys comparison 😂 I will say for the Scarlett though they are the most recent welsh region to win the league so they have that going for them I think Dan Edwards has got everything it takes to be QB1 but as you say, playing behind that front row as your O line is worrying 😬
Glad to see Dan Edwards there but no Reuben Morgan-Williams don't know how he's still not been selected, he's put in some great performances for the ospreys
Yeah, I have no idea about that one, mate. Behind Tomos, he’s been the best scrum-half in Wales.

Great to hear Bruce. Looking forward to watching Aus this summer 🦁

Yeah possible. The Gloucester coach said Anscombe was back fit for the scarlets game but they just decided to give them a rest. I wouldn’t put it past them to call him in in a week or two though, like you said
Flyhalf is always a debate in Wales but this is a real head scratcher
Yeah no doubt
I actually have no worries about Edwards stepping up to the mark. He’ll be great. BUT, I really think this should have been the back’s squad:
9s

Hardy
10s

Jarrod Evans
Anscombe
12s

James
13s
Roberts
Llewellyn
Wings
Adams

Back 3 look ok.
Centres could go well. I’m glad to see Joe Roberts back in the mix!
Scrum half is probably our most settled position so those picks are alright for me.
Back row could be ok.
Second rows are small and lightweight. Gotta use our mobility there! I hope Tshuinza is picked as lock rather than back row.
Front row is utter trash.
I can’t see this squad winning any games but I’ll be content as long as we see improvements on the summer and autumn.
Hope for no knock ons. Against SA, them knocking it on meant they got a penalty a few minutes later.
Got once Sam I’m not as positive as you are about the squad. I’m not impressed with the centres unless we see Roberts and James as the partners for the whole 5 games but we will defo see Watkin and A another
Scrum will get mashed and we’re throwing in 2 inexperienced fly halves to play behind a team that can’t go forward. Gats has to go for me
I am glad Edwards is in there though and Mee
I actually think the back row is the only area of the squad where we have no issues. If Tshiunza is a Lock, Wainwright, Faletau, Reffell, Morgan and Botham is looking good. Other than that, agree with you Sam, front row is worrying…
@@TheWelshSportsPodcast don’t get me wrong, dude, I’m not feeling positive at all haha.
@@samothemano 😂 it’s a tough time to feel positive about anything atm
Morning Christian, an interesting point for you, wales are the only rugby union from the home nations and france that dont employ a full time age level coach! Surely we need a bridge between age level including u21s and the full international squad, i know this is the reason the u21s are playing this series of games against a mix of acadamy sides, but it needs to continue after their 6ns, may even stop players going to England!
Good morning to you
That’s a really interesting observation actually.
100
Yeah that’s a spot on breakdown of the shambles that Gatland had thrown together. I don’t see the thought process with the squad at all
@@TheWelshSportsPodcast i dunno about you, i just feel he's going through the motions. Where is Wimbush? where is Lockett? Where is K.Teipulotu? Surely, 1 of his aims is to get these dual qualified players on board christian?
@@hyllaf Good point
@@TheWelshSportsPodcast I think it has a lot to do with his incompetent coaching staff too - the whole blydi lot, unfortunately 😞
Thank you mate 👍🏼 Yeah agree with you completely. It’s just scattergun at the moment. It’s hard to see what he’s trying to do isn’t it
Gutted for Cam winnet. Having him frozen out of the squad all together seems criminal.
Yeah me too. Makes no sense when he’s saying we need to plan for the future
Yeah spot on about the Dragons boys. I suspect we will see a lot on Ben T at 10 not in his best position
He's building for the future. And the next world cup not only that he has to think about size you've only got to look at s Africa and the size of them that'll make a difference.
If building, why Liam Williams?
I just think Edwards would benefit from having a senior mentor in the squad to help him through a game week, ect
And leaving out Llewellyn and Winnett does it make sense if you’re planning for the future?
If edwards gets injured, anscombe can be called up quickly and seamlessly walk into the squad with his experience.
I just would’ve liked to have seen a more experienced 10 in the squad to help mentor Edwards that’s all
@TheWelshSportsPodcast I'm not sure he needs it tbh, it's possible that gatland has seen all he needs to to back Edwards and is just looking to see if he's currently ready to step up. He may also judge it to be more important to build depth in other positions rather than taking multiple fly halves.
That’s a fair point I certainly agree that he has all the confidence you need to play that position so let’s hope that he flourishes
In NZ, rugby fans outside of Chiefs country (and many within it) don’t rate Gats at all. It was only after he left that the Chiefs became a force.
Yeah I’ve heard a lot of that tbh. Thanks 🤙🏼
ioan lloyd + dan edwards should be the 10 combo
I would have preferred to see Jarrod Evans over Lloyd but I’ll be interested to see how Lloyd plays at 10 over the next couple of months with Costelow injured
So, Gatland seems to think Llewellyn is a 12. FML 🤦♂️
As you said buddy, there are some strange, if not downright crazy decisions in that squad. It's quite depressing.
Yeah it’s an odd one mate. Don’t really understand the thought process behind it all
I don't know what medication Gatland is on. It's obviously skewed his judgement (since he's cone back to be fair). No RMW. No Jarod Evans.
Just wait for Morgan Morse. He will be a class act!
Yeah it’s a strange one isn’t it. RMW can feel really disappointed. Been the best 9 in Wales behind tomos
Strange Anscombe isn't there. Him and Tomos have been playing well together.
Yeah agreed. Plus, I think it would’ve done Edwards good to have an experience mentor with him
Great isn't it! You might have a potential good number 10 coming through, only been starting regional for a season, hasn't looked amazing but promising! And what does gatland do but stick him in there with the same midfield that failed before! Jarrod Evans for me every day!!! Fair play, good pod cast chris
Very kindly to say thank you👍🏼
Yeah, I agree with everything you said to be honest , it doesn’t make a lot of sense to me, but I think we’ll see Ben Thomas playing most of the six Nations out of position again 🤷🏻♂️
Yeah, I didn’t think of the name situation. it’s going to be awkward when I do my game reviews trying to make sure I say the right name😂
I think mish mash is a good way of putting it and I’m with you not including either of those experienced outside half in the squad is a mistake to me
Thanks, mate.
Better back row would be, Freddie Thomas, Olly Cracknell and Jim Botham
That was the backrow v Fiji in the 2023 World cup.
Hope Faletau can roll back the years here, can't see him making another RWC or with the Lions but an absolute Welsh legend.
Will Griff John should have had many more caps At least he offers a physical presence not like the other props .Massively underrated !
Gatland thinks he's out of shape but what props arnt these days. No prop plays 80min
What a load of crap ! Look at the physique on Cian Healy .Our boys are not fit or strong compared to other nations .I see a lot of these guys training in the off season and believe they are pitiful to watch in fact embarrassing. No pride or respect in themselves .
@pauledwards7340 name me one top level prop who plays 80min, please.
It’s just his selection is out of pure desperation. He had a chance to develop him in the past and he never really gave him much of an opportunity. Now he’s reaping what he sowed
@pauledwards7340 Name me one top-level prop who plays a full 80minutes please.
Dan Edward’s is the best fly half in Wales at the moment so should be playing for Wales
That’s fair enough. I just wish he had some experience with him
Liam Williams won't be there for the next world cup so I don't know why Anscombe isn't in the squad.
100% agree makes no sense
I have no doubt that Edwards is a solid player and can succeed at this level, but my worry is he’s been set up to feel playing in this team in its current iteration
Cheers mate 👍🏼
I think Rhys Henry ripped his calf just before the Newcastle match, so wasn't available.
Thanks mate. It’s such a shame because I really do rate him but he doesn’t have much luck when it comes to injuries
I thought Blair Murray has some 10 experience - maybe not at senior level though?
I think more in schoolboys rugby but not much at senior rugby to my knowledge
Agreed that the backs selection is very odd, he almost seems like he's trying to be sacked? Going to be very tough for Edwards to make his debut behind a pack that's going backwards and no in form players outside him. Feel that Anscombe should have been included despite his age, he'd be a good mentor for Edwards if nothing else. Not sure why Bevan keeps being selected despite not playing that well for Cardiff or Wales, RMW is a better player. Not including Llewelyn is actually baffling.
The conspiracy minded person in me makes me wonder if he just wants to be sacked and get that severance payment and retire off into the sunset🤷🏻♂️
Wholeheartedly agree about your Anscombe point there’s no way Edwards wouldn’t benefit from having a player like him around in training
France away needs some effort
Williams, Hathaway, Watkin, Tompkins, Adams, Edwards, Tomos, Morgan, Faletau, Wainwright, Jenkins, Rowlands, Thomas, Parry, Thomas
I can't fit Ben Thomas in as starting 10, on bench to cover 10 and centres else he comes in at 12 for Tompkins.
This business about 'no credible offer' for WillGriff John being eligible, about sums it up.
Bench: Assirati, Dee, Smith, Tshinuza (last chance this year), Botham, Bevan, Rogers, Ben Thomas
Edwards could be goalkicker.
Funny squad
Very funny squad
I like your team but I have no interest in seeing Nick Tompkins play for Wales regardless of the state of things.
But then he’s left out Winnett for Liam Williams So it makes no sense to me
Only taking one 10 and omitting Llelewyn is ridiculous. Gatland will be out at the end of the six nations
Yeah very odd. I don’t really get it
Totally confused with the 10 selection. Great to see Sam Parry in
Hope so 🙏
Great work mate as always. You do have to wonder what is in Gatlands head or what his plans are. The usual nonsense explanations and excuses and bizarre selections. Just going through the list of stuff I'd change;
Winnett out Liam in (despite lack of games and poor form)
Llewellyn out Tomkins in is just daft
Rowlands still there and not someone younger and playing better like Rhys Davies or Fender (Rowlands will play over Teddy or Freddie sadly)
Bevan rather than Morgan-Williams makes no sense (even though I love Bevan at Cardiff)
Faletau age and constant injuries/niggles over someone like Cracknell/Morgan Morse/Morgan Morris (big love for Toby forever though)
Watkin still there and will play over younger more exciting options like James and Roberts (worth a look at Macs Page?)
Evan Lloyd would have been nice to maybe get Coghlan into camp instead and have a look
Willgriff over well any other 3 out there is another bizarre one
Only picking one 10 who is very young and a new cap is bold and will mean playing Ben at 10 out of position again
No Dyer although wales aren't struggling for back 3 options so maybe the least of Gats crimes
Dunno what I expect really after all this time but this'll be Gats last squad anyway so get behind Wales as always and hope they can sneak a win from somewhere although I'm not holding my breath
Yeah no idea Rich. There’s a few players that deserve being in the squad. It’s a very strange one
It’s all a bit over the place and it smacks of desperation with some of the selections like you said
It’s all just a mess and I wonder like you setting up down Edwards to fail at the beginning of his career. To be honest, it feels like he’s trying to get himself sacked so he can get that severance package and sail off into the sunset.
Start Dan Edwards in France !
Picking one 10 is mental, what if we get an injury.
Llewellyn omission is crazy especially as he picked him in every game in the Autumns. Not trying many of the centres with only 2 backs on the bench (that worked out well).
This selection just shows Gatland has lost it and has no long term plan.
Yeah, even if he didn’t want to play Anscombe then having him as a mentor for Edwards surely can only benefit the young player🤷🏻♂️
Another Boyo from down under NZ supporting Wales
🏴Thanks for watching the channel from the other side of the planet John 🇳🇿
With Gatland likely to go if we get a whitewash, I feel strangely disconnected. Let him go full on, in the direction he believes. If he’s got the edge as coach, he should come up with results but if not, we have the chance to move on.
I’m looking forward to the likes of Edwards & Mee getting their chance, let’s see how it all goes
Yeah really fair assessment mate I’m with you on that
Garlands not got a lot wrong but the places he did were crucial mistakes
Yeah I agree with that mate
This squad is baffling . No Jarrod Evans, Llewellyn, Crackell . Can’t understand the selection of Blair Murray .
He likes his New Zealand doesn’t he which makes me surprised that he hasn’t stuck with Plumtree
Anscombe and Williams both born in 1991. So Chicken is to old and we need to be looking at youngsters, but Sanjay is all good, so we ditch one of our most exciting and consistent youngsters.... the mind boggles!
Couldn’t of put it better myself, James👌🏼 mental
bad decision to leave Gareth Anscombe out - unless he's injured
He’s not. Gats just said he’s to old 😬 Same ages a Liam Williams and Toby mind 🤷🏻♂️
A lot more experience in that squad than for some time. Would Ben Thomas be goal kicker if Dan E is not on the pitch?
He’s the only real option on my opinion 🤷🏻♂️
No Llewelyn is terrible specially when wales struggle with a centre, only good news is Costellow is out 😂
Dan Edwards has already felt the Wooden Spoon at under 20...
Relax the hype in fairness..
@TheWelshSportsPodcast I gotta try and stay optimistic 😅
No disrespect to Edwards and Thomas as I think they are both incredible players but having a 21 year old uncapped fly half and a 12 who barley plays fly half is awful when it’s arguably the most important position.
Wholehearted agree with you Ton. It’s a bit of a joke tbh
a vanilla squad.
A mental squad o would call it 😂
Gatland failed at the Chiefs and has failed with Wales. The game has moved on and it’s time for Gatland to go. They’ll have a poor 6 nations and then the WRU will fire him. End of.
Yeah hard to argue with that
I will preface this by saying i watch Gloucester, and The welsh URC teams games, almost all of them, and just dont get why more players for teams that are more clutch, or winning more etc are not picked.
I agree with 100% of everything you said
Jesus Jacob where do I even start with that one 😂
Yes, to argue with most of what you said. O do like Mee I think he’s got a lot of potential and he’s only 21 so I’m happy to get him in the squad and have a look at him
Dallas Cowboys comparison 😂 I will say for the Scarlett though they are the most recent welsh region to win the league so they have that going for them
I think Dan Edwards has got everything it takes to be QB1 but as you say, playing behind that front row as your O line is worrying 😬
@@TheWelshSportsPodcast sorry I just can't figure that Gatland out. I think he wants fired
Gatland out
Dunno what Jarrod Evan’s needs to do to get another shot. Plays well for Quins week in week out
Yeah agreed 🤷🏻♂️
