  • This temple was built by the Nriputungavarman, Pallava period, in 800AD. This Kailasanathar temple is placed in the Palar river and built on a tiny rocky island. There is no Ambal here before, and only the Shiva Lingam is present. However, the current structure is new, and while renovation, a new Ambal has been kept here. There are shrines of Nandi, Navargraha are present here. During the Panguni Utthiram festivals of the Kailasanathar and Kamakshi wedding takes place here. The scenic Palar from the rock island looks excellent, though.
The magnificent legend sculpture (only the Footmarks / Kneemarks) at the back of the temple shows Kailasanathar in meditation in the rain, with a Rajanagam covering him as an umbrella and a cow pouring milk on him. And there is another story that these are Kneemarks of Parvathi Devi, where she came here to find Lord Shiva.
