THANKS FOR WATCHING! - Навчання та стиль
The couple that looks for tomato horn worms after dark with a black light together stays together. 😊
Making black lights cool again 😎😂
My neighbors must think I,m crazy when at 11 o'clock there is a glow coming out of my green house. It works great plus the grandsons think l,m cool
hi mr danny and ms wanda 🤗
this year has been riddled with garden issues of all kinds across the country and around the world.
im dealing with very poor germination and slow growth (with certain plants), aphids and spider mites. my tomato plants aren't big enough to attract tomato hornworms.
we will all adapt and overcome, but it has been a new learning curve for me since nov 2022 - that's when i started noticing new and strange issues in my garden ... and it's been an uphill battle ever since. tfs
TIP
1. I use the BLACK LIGHT to get them while tiny at night. I pull the stem and all. Put them in a bucket limbs. Maybe a few extra. I feed them. As they get big I give them to the chickens.
2. I buy TULLE wedding fabric on Amazon by the bolt. Pretty cheap. I also buy plastic CLOTHES PINS on Amazon. I cut squares large enough to cover a cluster of tomatoes very loose. Secure with clothes pins. It saves my tomatoes every year from tomato horn worms and back worms. I take out the ripe ones when they get ready. Resecure. (I pollinate the extra flowers by gently flicking with my finger before putting the Tulle on it.
I do this with my blueberries and raspberries. And figs.
At the end of the season. I start gathering the Tulle and pins and put in a covered bucket when they are dry. They will last a few years if you take care of them.
This is not pretty but it works. Organically
Happy Gardening in 2024

Ms Wanda, I tell my husband “there’s one! Get it.” lol I’m not touching that thing.
Use gloves. Thin gloves.
I use a pair of scissors! I am a 71 y/o window and I am not touching them with gloves or no gloves
When I was a kid, I thought that "horn" on those caterpillars would sting and hurt me. Not any more! I've never had an infestation like you all are having, and I hope I never will! But what fun you two had!! BTW, the night sounds in the background are beautiful!
Date night lol😊❤
Great tip using the blacklight to find them. I didn't realize they glow in the dark.
I didn't know that they glow either. I knew scorpions glow under a black light.
@@jamiedolen3182 I guess that's where they got those plush "glow worm" toys from back in the day. You know you put batteries in them and squeeze them and they light up? I remember them.
The changes in the earth’s atmosphere is causing crazy stuff with birds and insects for sure. At least for me.
Yes and it's going to get worse.
Yes we have roaches bad! Never in my life have I had this problem and no level of cleaning is helping.
This year I’ve not gotten any tomato worms. I planted lots of marigold around my plants.
I’m glad y’all are getting rid of the 🐛. Thanks for the info about the black light.
This year- for me- the bugs are off the chain. Mr. Danny told us! Like y’all - my chickens get full. I’ve been freezing the worms/bugs and give my chicken a frozen snack in the heat of the day. ( I’m in the south too- it’s already to hot here) I took Mr Danny’s advice and got most of my garden up out of the ground. Mostly in protein tubs ( I raise farm to table beef- so I have tons of tubs) I can’t afford vego beds( although I’m saving my Pennie’s for one for my strawberries. But this heat already and the bugs- I’m fixing to call it quits on the garden already- I just can’t keep up! My prayers for everyone else- may your gardens be bountiful! God bless!!
TIP
My husband puts BUG ZAPPERS at each end of the tomato patch. The zap the moths that lay the tomato horn worm eggs.
We did an experiment a patch with and without. It was very effective!
Lane and Rhonda from TN
I miss those garden spiders from my childhood. Black and yellow, bigger than my hand. Don’t see them like that much these days. Also we don’t have lightening bugs like we used to..
Blackberry lights can do amazing things!
I need a black light! And a greenhouse.
I tried that last year, and worked beautiful! Will house it again this year with 36 tomato plants set out!
Hi Danny and Wanda.
I've never had those on my tomatoes.
It's good you have the black light and can see them and get them as
well as during the day.
Gotta get those buggers off the plants. There are some big suckers too.
I've got a black light and am going to put it to use just to be sure
don't have any.
Can find stink bugs too lol
Glad you shared this. I definitely got an education on bug removal and really do appreciate
a black light makes a difference.
Wow! That was a learning experience. Thanks Mr. Danny & Miss Wanda! God bless y'all!
We hopefully you get them all. I’ve been hearing lots of peoples gardens are getting lotsa bugs this year
Yes it's going to be nation wide.
Thanks for hosting all those little buggers at your place. We're hosting cutworms this season lol.
🦋🇺🇸👋Good afternoon Mr Danny & Miss Wanda. Love those night lights 🙌. Thks for sharing ❤
From one gardener to another, I am very sorry about the terrible infestion of horn worms. I just saw a short video of a gardener using " Surround" Kaolin Clay for use in keeping pests and fungus off plants. You mix it with water and put it in a sprayer. I think I'll try it. I have used Bonide products with success--- organic products. Lee
Wow! You caught quite a few! Black light is worth its weight in gold 😊
Them horn worms are great to collect in a cricket keeper for fish bait! I mean for real, they're AWESOME bait!!!
I need to go out there tonight with mine and see if they are there yet. I grew a lot of dill this year. I had plants 3 and 4 feet tall. I'm using the leaves around my yellow squash and zuccini. So far, no bugs. I'm hoping this will help. Fun and informative video!
Thank y'all. We will have to try this next time. We had such an issue this year with worms it was crazy. We were pulling em off a hundred at a time in the high tunnel. Had em in our carrots peppers tomatoes grapes onions everywhere. Finally believe we have em under control. Be praying for y'all to get rid of those buggers. Have a blessed day.
Mr Danny I do the same thing at night me and my daughter in Louisiana in her garden
French marigolds planted in between the tomato plants and never an issue. My family has been doing this for over 40 years. I just knew since I was little my dad, aunts and uncles always plant them by tomatoes.
I've still got my marigolds as seedlings, soon will be big enough to put out in the garden. They do help alot. I do the like 3 ft tall ones, too.
Horn worm by black light, Too funny I wish I could have Seen that U2 are a hoot. Love you both.
We have the same problem and they have cleaned my garden out of tomatoes and peppers.
fish bait and chicken feed on the foot
Now I don't feel quite so bad. I have had every type of bug in my garden this year. Even white flies on the tomato plants. I cover my greens etc, and still get eggs! It is a nightmare.
I used a blacklight last year. My husband and I would also go out in the dark ‘hunting’. Lol
This was fun!
do they eat the plant and the tomatoes? Can you spray them? I have "Asian Lady Bugs" in the larvae stage . They drive me insane. Get on me when I get in my plants. I'll be spraying them again. Supposed to be on a 2 year cycle but some of them lost track of time and now I get some every year. Bummer.
We don't believe in spraying.
They are great for chickens.
After too many, even the chickens will hold off on eating them for a while.
What do you think if you sprinkle coffee grounds around the plants.,🤔
It would only add a little nitrogen.
Have you thought about planting some tobacco. The hummingbird moth or hawk moth loves tobacco. So maybe they would leave the tomato alone . We have them here in NC also . Even though we have lots of tobacco they spray there’s so the moth picks our tomatoes.lol
Wow, amazing, I just bought two. Thx
Lost a whole row of green beans to cut worms, at first thought the plants laying down because they were heavy with beans. Nope. Would DE help with the worms are they too high up on the plants?
If I recall aright, cutworms attack the base of the plant just at or just below ground level. That’s why people use collars that reach about two inches above and below the ground when they’re transplanting plants. I expect that cutworms could be hunted by night, but I have never done it; I generally find them while I’m cultivating.
I am so sorry that you have this problem. Hopefully you will be able to eliminate the problem. Great idea about the black light.
It will be a daily chore now. Insects are going to cover our country.
I’m out in the old farm land. But I had to give in and spray my garden. Couldn’t let all the hard work go to those pasty bugs. All the chemicals I buy from hoss in South Georgia, as you will know where they are. As of today I have no bugs yet.
I have one tomato plant left that I got out of the chicken pen and they haven’t touched it. I don’t understand why they aren’t eating it when it’s right next to ones they destroyed.
@ Pecan Grove try planting CATNIP with the tomato plants. Just watched a random recommended video a few days ago & this was mentioned. Apparently, the horn worm really dislike catnip? Worth a try I would say! Good luck & God Bless 🙏
Wow. Plants must be stressed. With your diligence, you'll get control. Prayers 🙏 for a bountiful harvest.
East texas and i dont have a single locust. Maybe the rain drowned them. We have had almost our entire years rainfall already. 39in.by june.
Same here in NW GA. We'll probably get them around the end of this month. That's when they usually appear in my area. We call em July Flys for that reason. Much Love ❤
With the water rains come the bugs!
I'm up in southern Missouri, and the hornworms haven't started here yet. Amazingly, last year was different in that I had only a very few hornworms.
If I am not mistaken, those little worms that you find at night can be as big as your finger by morning because of all the foliage they consume overnight.
My routine is to check the tomatoes with a flashlight after I have closed up the barns for the night. Doesn't take long to check the 8-12 plants I do every year. Nothing more discouraging than going out in the morning to find a plant almost gone because of 2 or 3 hornworms.
I also check the ground under the plants in the bright light of day for their droppings to help locate worms. If your soil is clear of weeds and grass, the black droppings show up pretty well, especially if the soil is a little dry and light colored.
Bt works great for caterpillars.
I plant Basil with my tomatoes and for the past 3 years I've never had any ... prayers up & Blessings
Wow. May have to start looking earlier next year until they get under control. My work schedule doesn't allow for night patrol. Four am. comes early. Yikes! Bats are drinking all of my hummers syrup at night after they pull the little flowers off to make holes bigger. It is just getting crazy.
I hate those tomato worms! I would be wearing a thin pair of gardening gloves to get them though!
I absolutely want those DS-cross Tomato Seeds ..!! Been watching & waiting for them. Whenever you're ready. -- 💌🍒
PS: Mix DE & crushed eggshells to put beneath mulch on ground. Sharp Edges shd deter some of those slimy bugs. Too bad the fire ants can't be trained to eat the lousy things, sigh.
Thanks for this! Looks like ill be buying a black light.
Plant catnip around the tomato’s. The night shade worms don’t like it.
Awwww.... so sorry for the awful invasion of tomato horn worms and now stink bugs. UGH! SO much extra work! How neat the black lights work so well for seeing them. Blessings and love...
Happy to say for a change I am not finding a lot of horn worms this year (knock on wood). I did plant marigolds in between my tomatoes, maybe that works. 🤔
Hey Mrs Wonda, what do you use to make your videos? They are super clear and the audio is fantastic! Do you use your phone, or is it a special camera type. ❤
My phone and a cannon camera.
You both are brave. I would be using gloves.🧤
They don't bite.
Last year was a bad year for the tomato horn worms for us. There was a while we were outside with a black light every night.
I’m going to get a black light. Every year we get some tomato worms and I expect this year will be the same. Our issue in zone 5 is the intensity of the sun.
Ok that is a crazy looking bug
Goodness, the bugs would eat me up at night, but you gotta do what you gotta do. So far, I haven't seen any hornworms and my tomato leaves are fine. I think some slugs may be feasting on pepper leaves. I've got to put some more copper coils out. No vine borers, YET. They are coming because they get my squash every year.
You know when you have those horn worms when your cutting grass and see those little white moth everywhere
Would de get rid of tomato horn worms
No
I was finding army worms in my tomatoes themselves last year.😊
10:40 That looks like one of many varieties of centipedes , and centipedes are ferocious predators of plant pests. If it’s a millipede, then it prefers to feed on detritus and attacks good produce only when the produce has problems.
Good morning.
Morning
Just a thought. I wonder how effective a trap crop of a few tobacco plants would be, just a plant here and there.
Oh I had that issue two years ago. For what ever reason I didn’t have any. The only reason I can figure is they were covered in wasp eggs. Which kill them.
I wonder how you got so many hornworms this year. I don’t recall you having a problem with them
Last year at all. Hope you’re able to get them under control. They are one really pesky problem that can be hard to get rid of if you don’t stay on top of it.
The whole country is about to be infested with insects.
My black light from O light works great
Not with my fingers, they don't. I fell out laughing!!
I wonder if the bad spots in the leaves are glowing because of buildups of phosphorus... 🤔 I'm pretty sure phosphorus is florescent under black light
Probably
I have been checking twice after dark and early morning hours. In one night cut worms attacked my carrots. Never before have I had this happen to my carrots. And cabbage worms destroyed two cabbages. So far I won the war. But I had to resort to using BT. But I have to save my food. Here where I am up north to
Stores just blooming. Not time for tomato worms but that will be another battle later this summer.
I've had an infestation every year and I don't know why i look for poop even if I can't find them they are usually small but they big in a hurry
I think I need a black light! Got to get them buggers!😂
At what time you went to check?
Just after dark.
What does fish emulsion do? I use it on my fruit trees for fertilizer, but I never heard of it to kill bugs?
Id like to know too!
I think he said the stinky smell of it kept the bugs away.
It doesn't kill them it deters them because of it's horrible scent.
@@pecangrovems Good to know! Thank you!❤️
Good grief! I've never seen that many!
Yuk😮 but chickens love them .
I’ve never seen that many tomato worms before
Good LORD, spray some bt, it is safe and a whole lot easier than picking off by hand.
I was an organic producer. Even if you use DE they still have to eat the leaves to die. We choose now to just hand pick and not use chemicals. Even though there called safe there still chemicals and don't belong in our body. Research shows BT mutates in the human gut for up to two weeks.
@@pecangrovems Pork is absolute filth and you eat that
A black light is a great investment!
Good morning! It's a shame about those hornworms. I hope you can find a good solution 🙏💕
Danny and Wanda prefer to use manual controls to chemical ones. Manual does a lot of labor!
Bug hunting 👍
Call me crazy BUT wouldn’t a black light head lamp make sense?
Someone please invent one!!! 😂
Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) dust and your troubles are over.
Yes I know but BT has shown to mutate in the human gut which is not healthy.
Beneficial insects!!!!
Ugghh, now you’ll be busy 24-7 with the added night shift to manage this. Hope you can get it under control 😖
The will clean a plant completely over night!
💝🔦👍💝
Free chicken feed!
Does fish emulsion kill squash bugs?😊
No it deters them.
How can you naturally get rid of them?
Danny and Wanda are demonstrating one form of natural pest control.
You could spray BT but we don't use chemicals.
🙏🙏🙏🙂♥️🕊👍 Successful hunting black light helps a lot😊
Boy, talk about a bountiful night! Unreal . . . . . .
The bad spots in the leaves that glow, may be eggs.
