Awesome! I'm getting them with the WS-12. I really liked the effort you put into the start of your video.
Thanks! Photography is a creative outlet for me, along with cooking :)
Surfing and researching IN5s and IN8s and discovered your channel. Like your style, knowledge and presentation. With the results of my research pointing towards 3 way monitors, I will be replacing my current 2 way near fields with a set of IN5s along with a sub (best bang for the buck). I would buy the IN8, but they are currently out of stock (as of Nov 16) and will not be available until mid December 2021. My studio is 15 FT wide x 22 FT long and is a good sounding room. I produce a lot of smooth jazz and world music. My 100 watt Alesis M1 Active MkIIs lasted me for about 17 years and they still sound great.. Very musical speakers, but I need something with more detail. Since I am 69 years old, this will probably be my last set of new monitors. Thanks for the video. Keep up the good work.
I would opt for the 8’s if you can… the wait will be worth it!
@@WillBorza I will pre-order from Sweetwater. Thanks
Hello Will,I bought the in 8 monitors. These monitors are awesome for mastering. I know you're really going to sink into some mixes soon. Kali did it again.
Glad you like them! These new ones are KILLER - 2nd wave Kali is gonna be amazing!
Do you think the 8 inch speakers are better than the 5 inch?
I like this young man.. Great work man.. I purchased these monitors over 2 years ago and never used them.. I mean barely.. I have the Alesis Monitor Ones and those are my go to's.. But this is interesting and I trust this young man.. Fly studio too..
Bose speakers I just bought they are brilliant never heard studio monitors like that so impressed with it I use it with my MPC x and man the samples the sounds everything is on point
Wait wait - Bose speakers or *Those speakers?
Just got "Mastering Audio..." by Katz. You're working on answering an important question about the computer focus, and the engineer's relationship to the monitors. My plan is to keep the monitors in a steady spot, as well as myself. Basically what you're already doing with the desk that your gear is mounted on, and the PC in the middle. That's going to be my entire set up. If by chance another larger screen is required, it can be done using an HDMI cable forward-facing, beyond the monitors. But given the importance of Listening, as opposed to Seeing, I think it's a nice idea... though perhaps not fully required, hence the traditional "computer as an afterthought". It can make a person's studio look more flashy, which is great for self-promotion, I guess. But.... is it really needed? yikes! lol I had to get off of gearspace pretty much the second I got on, because I was debating someone about whether or not you need to have $20,000-$50,000 monitors to Master amazingly, and how it can- believe it or not- be done Amazingly Well, even without a room, or entire building, constructed specifically for the purpose. Oh, My, Goodness. Anyone who has even so much as an inkling about your skillset, or the equipment you use, knows you're going to get Amazing Results. And apparently results that win awards. (30STM's first album is still the best for me, however, Congratulations!)
Regarding the need to take a regular break, or "reset" one's ears to avoid fatigue: I can see some strengths to this set up. Iterative turning (of the body) may be quite the human "off/on" switch for our ears... as well as: getting up to take a walk every 30-40 mins, go to the kitchen make some coffee, turn on the sink, pee (but not on the monitors!), flush the toilet, hear the waves of the ocean and the cawing of the birds as you check the mail, Chew gum, etc. All of this is going to do some sort of natural "resetting". But I'm very curious to know how you feel about this set up a few months, or 30 records from now!
Ahhh...)) Now i see everything! Not expecting to see it in unboxing video, tho :) Now i understand why's DAC character is important to you- is a bridging between workspaces and domains.
Now that they have fixed the problem with the 8's, would you still opt for the 5's over the 8's?
Thanks for a great and insightful review. BTW, love the Central Coast area. It sounds that, despite, or because of the A/D conversion to get into the built in DSP, that conversion is transparent enough to make good decisions? Looks like is you need to add a sub, you've got a JBL 6312 lurking? I spent the better part of 15 years on a 6328/6312 system. I'm just looking to get back into a 3-way system, which is what I grew up on, and have been missing it through all my variations of studio monitors, from Dynaudio to Tannoy and old KRK with the inverted domes. Again, thanks for the review and it'll be interesting how and if your assessment is over time.
Thanks Henry! I’m still loving these speakers a month later :-)
Hey man, great video. But I dont understand how you have all that equipment but no room treatment? window right behind you, speakers nit ear level etc... ?
ASC tube traps, heavy curtains reinforced with w/ MLV, massive bass traps, the stairway makes a nice port, and Sonarworks for the last 5%. The initial sonarworks room scan actually showed a pretty dang flat room without any software treatment :)
My speakers sound muffled.
Did you take them out of the cardboard?
Thanks, sounds better.
I'm planning for Adam A4V but Kali IN 5 be seems an affordable option too ... What should I do ?
Cool video! What do you think about the Audeze headphones you have? From the looks of it they are the LCD X? I have them and absolutely love them! Especially with a bit of EQ.
Totally wanna try these out. Mainly been an NS-10 guy (actually I’ve been rocking NS-10T’s for like 10 years but whatever) and three way / coaxial speakers have both been intriguing me and this seems too good not to try.
That's cool! I'm using both IN-5 and NS-10T pair (garage-sale find) and find it a nice combo. Also started using Blue Mix-Fi headphones to reference super low sub content as needed. Might check out the Kali Sub when I move to a bigger room.
IN-8 2nd wave is right around the corner too!
Is each driver from all three, amped individually ?
I ordered these 2 days ago. It’s currently a Sunday and they should arrive on Wednesday. I am so excited to hear them for myself! Coming from a pair of KRK Rokit 8 RPG2 that I bought back in 2012-2013 and they are sounding like complete crap. All the high end information is gone, just a muddy mess. Can’t wait to hear The Kali IN-5!
I’m stoked for you! You’re gonna love these!
how are they man? have u kept them
@@prodnoyse I absolutely love them. They sound phenomenal. At least coming from 2nd gen Rokit 8's. I havent heard that many monitors though, so i dont have much to compare them too. ive had the JBL 305 (idk what generation), and those KRKs i mentioned earlier, and a friend years ago had a pair of 8" Mackies, no clue on the model, but the IN5's are so far my favorite. Great stereo imaging, and the frequency response is smooth and tight. If u need to hear more sub frequencies then u definitely need a sub, but im actually surprised on how much bass these things can produce for being a 5" driver.
So I have the lp6 and I connected them and no sound is coming. The interface and everything is set up correctly but nothings coming out. Any suggestions?
Could be a bunch of things. Maybe call customer service?
Was planning to buy LP-6, but Kali introduced this model and I have a trouble 😅
ooooh buddy if you have the extra funds, BUY THIS MODEL!!!
Do you prefer the IN-5's over the IN-8's? Whats the difference beside the hiss? Would you recommend them with the Kali Sub? Thanks!
I 100% prefer these over the IN-8’s for two main reasons: 1. NO HISS!! And 2. They don’t go into standby mode. They stay on until you unplug/power down. That being said, I’m looking forward to 2nd Wave IN-8s which should have these two features plus the extended low end that a larger cone provides.
Did you say that the IN5 does NOT have the hiss? I use lp models and never have heard noise or hiss. Thanks..
Correct! These new IN-5’s reduce self-noise by 12dB (about 200%). If you can’t hear the hiss on the LP line, get close and put your ear up to the tweeter
I love that shirt
It’s from Manley!
Cool video very helpful for someone who would not know wich model of speakers to choose!!!
Do you think someone can mixx properly with them, let's say if you have a very. good pair of headphones for low end tasks like the audeze you got and by. the way wich model do yoou rock???
Can you do a review please i am kind of interested of buying a pair of audeze but i quite don't know wich model to go for their line is so
big !!! thanks in advance
Thanks for watching! I’ve been mastering with them for 2 weeks now, they are incredible! You can definitely get great mixes on these speakers. I have the Audeze LCD-X. They’re incredible. See if maybe you can find someone who would let you borrow/demo a pair?
Thoughts on possibly pairing the Kali sub with the IN5's?
100% do it!
hello, thanks for your work. I got JBL LSR305 monitors who it's known are a budget masterpiece. Do you think Kali IN5 will be a significant step up for me?
YES! Day and night difference
same boat here. have u purchased in5?
Hey, really nice review! I'm super glad you tested the hiss on these. A 12dB reduction in self-noise is a big deal! I'm considering picking these up instead of 2-way Neumann KH 120 A or Adam A7X at twice the price. Any thoughts/opinions? By the way, I always ask my wife to QC my final mixes/masters. Glad to see your Kali's passed the wife test :-)
The wife test is the most important test! I’ll tell you this much: the day after filming this video, I moved the IN-5s over to where my barefoots are and put the barefoots on top of the desk. I haven’t even turned on my barefoots since. These IN-5 are punching way above their class.
@@WillBorza would you say that the IN-5s punch above the IN-8s?
With the reduction in hiss, plus no longer timing out and powering off, yes. They rank higher than current IN-8s in my book. But when IN-8 2nd wave arrives, that will probably take the cake
Just setup a pair and I really like them so far. I'm new to 3-way speakers in general and the level of detail in the mids that is revealed on these is amazing. Highs are nice a clean without harshness. I wound up shelving the bass down (2 dB via dip switch on back) to clear up a touch of 160 to 230 Hz build up from small room modes, etc. Curious to see what correction profile Sonarworks comes up with. Maybe lift 80 Hz and below back up little bit.
Awesome!!!
Can you comment on transient response and higher mids (lower highs) vs In-8?
Transient response is very responsive. Accurate, forward, present, excellent. Mids are incredibly well balanced as well!
@@WillBorza I will try it for sure. Thank you for reply.
Are you using senheiser hd 600 or hd 650?
How do these compare to regular passive speakers like klipsch or elac bookshelves?
Hi! These are studio monitors, so they’ll likely be more “true to the source” than bookshelf speakers like the two you mentioned which have a tendency to boost lows and highs for a hifi effect. Also, these have power amps built-in, so no need for an additional amplifier and speaker wire. Just hook up directly to these via XLR, TRS, or VCA.
Hey man, thanks for upload this
What do you think is the best choice? Yamaha HS8 or Kali Audio 5?
It depends on your needs, values, space, etc. HS8 is going to have more low end extension, but the IN5 has a much more detailed midrange and better imaging
Nice review..i hope its honest..Would you risk buy them or the yamaha HS that are well known and tested?I need good good instrument separation
I love these Kali’s. I’ve worked on Yamahas as well and I think the midrange is much more detailed and even here on the Kali’s.
@@WillBorza Thanks.., i think i m gonna get them too..Please make a video again for after you work with them for a while .Cheers
When mixing and mastering ITB with no external hardware - exclusively on LCDX and Focal Clear Pro MG, which DAC+HP apm would you recommend me? Currently using an UAD Apollo Twin X in conjunction with a Rupert Neve Precision Amp - the results are not great. Getting better results coming out directly from HP out of the twin X. How ever using the same Neve in conjunction with an Arturia Audiofuse the results are quite good. Looking for something to bring a massive improvement so I can max out the capabilities of those headphones. Thoughts? Thank you!!!
Hey! I use the Grace M905 and love the results. Great for headphones as well as monitors. I’m very interested in something like the SPL phonitor or director, but haven’t had the opportunity to hear them in person yet. Lynx Hilo might be a good choice as well!
@@WillBorza thank you!!! I have the similar problem. I’m based out of Calgary, Canada and the stores here do not have such high end demo units... hard to buy when you can’t test it... Thank you again!!!
The LP-6 is the best selling speaker from Kali, I think the question most people would want to know is: Does the IN-5 dethrone it? Can the bass extend as far considering it has a higher dB rating, but a smaller diameter woofer? Is there any weird mid range stuff at the crossover frequencies? Would really appreciate some more details about how these stack up. So far you're the only user I've found with a review on these.
To me, the IN-5 is in a whole different weight class compared to the LP line. Bass does not extend as low but the bass that is there is presented very accurately. No crossover weirdness that I can hear, thanks probably to the onboard DSP tuning. I’d consider adding a woofer to these to round out the low end. But I put these in place of my barefoots last week and I haven’t even turned the barefoots on since then. That’s insane!
@@WillBorza Surprising comment about these vs. the Barefoots. That's a bold statement. Respectable and bold. Thank you for this review. Man, I'm hoping they fix the hiss problem in the 8's. I have my small nearfields covered, so I'm kinda stuck on getting the IN-8's. Thanks again.
I recently switched from LP-6 to IN-5 pair and I'm really happy. Bass is still there although tighter. The 5" woofer only has to produce 280 Hz and below while the 4" mid handles 280 Hz up to 2.8 kHz. I think this division of labor helps enable overall efficiencies in the low end, even with the smaller woofer. If my current room was bigger, I would add the Kali sub in a heartbeat. In the meantime, I'm able to reference the sub bass pretty well with a pair of Blue MixFi headphones (weird looking but Emmy-winning).
Excellent insight!
@@gnpriceI'm running the Kali W6-2 with Adams T5v's.... You would enjoy the sub - but - it MUST be on the floor and I think I'll need some dsp like a mini dsp hd to get everything aligned perfectly.... The small Kali sub output is absolutely INSANE! We will sit at a distance for movies and it is FAST/Impactful... my girl jumps regularly.
What its like mastering with the in5 i had the in8 but sund them back because of the limiter kept shutting off when I turn them up a bit after breaking them in. Brand new was highly upset Hope they made it a lil better in in5
I don’t really blast these things at unsafe levels, so I don’t really know what the limiter does when it kicks in.
@@WillBorza I had it a lil loud but not no crazy bust your speaker loud lol thanks man highly appreciated it. Might give the updated in5 a test. Thanks again
These monitors are killer! I put them in place of my Barefoots last week and I haven’t turned the barefoots on since!
@@WillBorza that's crazy I did notice the wife like them better too thats saying alot. definitely im grab them for mastering hopefully they have them in white one,s.
Man, I have a question, I have them horizontal, should they be vertical? Thanks man.. Im gone be the new nerd on yo'block.. LOL!!
Hey hey! These coax monitors (any of the “IN-“ monitors) can be placed vertical or horizontal. Even upside down 🙃
You think this is better than the SE Eggs munrro 150 monitors?
It's been a looong time since I've listened to a pair of Eggs. Can't say I remember loving them or hating them. But I LOVE these IN-5s
Great review! Love the description when comparing the barefoots. Are you aware of an approximate date for the 2nd gen of IN 8s? I'm guessing I should hold out for them instead because I deal quite a bit with afro Caribbean percussion and the harmonics can be tricky despite being in a 10x13 room. Thoughts?
Yo! I’m not sure when 2nd gen 8’s will arrive, but I can’t wait for them either!
IN8 2nd wave is out now
@@Styrant THANK YOU!!
@@Styrant arrived yesterday! Cable recommendations anyone? I have no complaints with what i have but you know...
@@user-nf8jj7pz6c Im using TRS to TRS on my IN-5's if thats what you mean. XLR is also a good balanced standard XLR to TRS also works fine, just avoid TS or RCA
Would you recomend them over the in8 then? I have a sub anyways, but i did not got a yes or no from any one to my question :D
Yes! Just on the less self noise and no more auto-power off features. But there will be a future IN-8 with these improvements, so you could get this now or wait for the future better IN-8
@@WillBorza I think i will wait then, im still working on the room acoustics at the Moment. But an Upgrade for my jbl 305's needs to Happen sooner or Later. Thanks for the Quick answer!
Are they gonna release the in6 next?
I think this is on par with the LP-6, and next will probably be a IN-8 or maybe IN-7? Or 10? I dunno.
What do you suggest for a 14sqm room. Kali IN 8 or Kali IN 5?
IN-5 and a good set of headphones :)
@@WillBorza thanks ;)
Hmm maybe get a sub too. It’s good to feel the bass in your room not just hear it piped straight into your ears.
the k5 are worth to use from time to time at a garden party as a dj?
Totally
@@WillBorza thanks !!
Can you confirm that IN-5 model did not hiss on minimal volume instead of IN-8?
The IN-5 has far less hiss than the original in-8, and the in-8v2 also has far less hiss
@@WillBorza Thanks for reply. As I understand IN-5 smaller than IN-8. I want to set them up close to my ear in a 25 square meter (268 square ft) room and use them to listen to music and watch movies and occasionally record mixes. Is this IN-5 suitable for me?
You’ll love them!
That music is great, what is it? Great channel!
Thanks! This is my friend Ian Roller on sax. This is a recording I made of his Senior Recital at CSUN back in 2011.

Is it available anywhere?
Not that I’m aware of
@@WillBorza That's a shame. I'd pay to download that track, and most likely others that you've recorded with Ian.
I'm too excited to go from my LP6 to these. Should give me a faster low end and even better imaging
Stoked for you man! These are a game changer!
Point-blank, how do these compare to the Genelec 8020D?
Haven’t personally spent any time with the 8020’s myself, but I LOVE the IN-5s and now use them daily!
Thanks for your quick response! Was just hoping for something like those Kali IN-5, in a more compact form-factor.
Hey. That wing nut was dripping oil and you drank it??? 😅
Nectar of the gods!
i dont get it. do you really need a 4 inch mid driver with 5 inch woofer? the 5 inch is like a mid driver itself. an in6 would have made more sense to my brain but id be happy to be wrong
The midrange is so incredibly detailed and flat. I can’t wait to hear their 2nd wave IN-8
@theBbOoSsSs
Using a smaller 5" midwoofer allows Kali to keep the center-to-center spacing between all of the drivers minimal, which is important in terms of improving directivity, and reducing vertical lobing and comb filtering.
It's also one of the aspects that allows these monitors to be used in a Horizontal Orientation. There will be a tradeoff in that regard if & when Kali release a model with a larger midwoofer that increases the center-to center spacing of the individual drive units.
Notice that the current IN-8 monitors are not recommended to be used in a horizontal orientation, even though they use the same concentric mid/tweeter driver as the IN-5? ;-)
im not sure if these are viable due to yamaha hs8 with better build quality, the hs8 will probably have less imaging but I guess if you need a better image on the mids these, if you need fuller range and rock hard durability then the yamahas.
What makes the build quality better on the Yamahas? Where are the Kali’s lacking in build quality?
@@WillBorza well first they've been around for ages and tried and true, and not made in china with the absolute cheapest cost in mind to deliver components and that sound as kali admitted. Anyway I atleast hope they fixed their nasty 9-10K dip that was present in the IN-8 and the horrid midrange crossover at 330hz. Still wouldn't touch this company, or any other budget monitor brand, but I'm still fascinated with the subject and hope my opinion will change one day. I think your dog agrees with me, dude was like "fuck no".

I’m surprised you’ve got no acoustic treatment

Searching for the Kali IN-5, UA-cam's magic algorithms presented this video to me. While I enjoyed the content, I noticed a prominent hiss in the audio. You have a great looking setup, but I'm wondering why your audio is so noisy.

@@WillBorza Please Kali, make an upgrade kit for the In-8!!!
@@romualdherrero1218
I already asked the guys at Kali about providing an upgraded amplifier kit or an exchange at a minimal cost to appease the current owners of their 1st Gen monitors.
They said that it's not possible for some reason, which as a DIY speaker and electronics builder I find highly suspect.
I realize that new products will and/or should always be improved, but it's a bit of a slap in the face to those who have put faith in the new company and invested in their 1st Gen products, when they obviously had multiple issues out of the gate that should not have even got past the testing phase, let alone QC. :-/
Let's face it, these are "budget" monitors in the grand scheme of things, and when manufacturing to such tight or strict production cost to retail pricing ratios, there are bound to be build quality and/or longevity issues.
It will be interesting to see how these products fair in the long term. I know several guys that are still happily using their 10-15 year old Genelecs. Of course, those are built to a higher standard, and you pay for it.
But irregardless of their performance out of the box, will the "value proposition" of the Kali's remain intact over the long term?
This is excruciating to watch. You finally stop blabbering about nothing and talk about the monitors at 10:20. What a waste of time.
Worse thing to do is touch the mid driver and this guy throws the instructions away then proceeds yo tap it in some sort of weird test that would achieve nothing lollllll
Worst thing to do? Says who? Can you link me some articles or something explaining why you say that?

Here's the Owner of kali audio saying it himself....The oils from ur hands is terrible for it...U're welcome :P
Fair enough. Although the speakers in that video are a different model, and 1st wave product. Not sure if the same applies to these. Also, I didn’t hear anything about hand oils. I been touching, dusting, cleaning, etc. all my speakers for decades with zero problems.
@@WillBorza I can assure you they do...it's the exact same mid range driver from the inception in u'r models as th IN 8's.
You have a lot of equipment and 3 pairs of studio monitors. I’m a bit shocked that you don’t seem to have any knowledge of acoustics. All monitors are standing on wood none are decoupled with foam or spikes or any kind of absorber.
