You can also use external hard drives on the USB ports to extend your storage space even more even when your computer does not have more slots for internal hard drives.
For General home use will an external hard drive just be better? I just want a simple way to backup photos and videos and I do have a bunch of old pcs laying around that still work fine. Wondering if I should just take out the hdd and put them into an external case or build one of these NAS systems
because my bios was so old that it did not have uefi, i had to format another drive i had laying around and put omv on that via the installation, as booting from usb was not an option. on the first boot it showed an ip address like in this video at 4:47 but when I went to the ip address it said that the page could not be found tried restarting the nas and it now does not show an ip address and this whole time i have not been able to log in, when i try to it basically just refreshes and tells me to put in a login again
I spent a lot of time exploring this possibility and now I can say with certainty that merging disks in this way does not give any positive result. If I cannot copy large files to the created pool, then this is a useless thing. If one disk becomes full, the system does not transfer files to another disk in this pool. You can merge disks of any size through Software RAID, and only in this case the files will be automatically transferred from one disk to another. All you need to do is create a RAID Stripe. Thank you for your hard work anyway.
Hmm.. I had an easy quest to set out for, but surprisingly I came up empty-handed. What would you say is the most cost-efficient way (in terms of hardware) to get a large amount of 2.5" SATA hard disks into a RAID pool? I have nineteen 1TB drives sitting around, I'm probably looking at using 8 to 12 of them in an array. What would you do if sheer speed wasn't of any concern at all?
how the hell people manage to find so many hdd? The NAS itself is always the least expensive part of the build, disks cost too much and are the real problem
Thank you for your effort I hope to have answer for my question I have lenovo q180 can I use it as NAS with additional HDD connected with USB? or I must have pc same you use in this video? I hope to have answer soon Thanks
Can this be set up to be accessed by a mac as well? I have both and need to be able to access the pool and read/write to it from both platforms. Thanks!
hello everyone, I have a problem in the step where you have to enter the password to access the server at 8:47, the command prop doesn't let me enter the password, and not even from the server. Could I have done something wrong? is it a problem with my computer?.
Access to the Internet is not required to really build this system; Just to download the software and update it when needed. You could firewall (and should) the NAS off of the Internet (no direct access from Internet to the NAS).
Hi I am quite inspired by your video and looking to build my own NAS with old hard drives. I have 1 Seagate desktop HDD, 1 Toshiba Disk Drive Cyl (8455MB) and 1 external HD (WD 1TB) and want to use this to build NAS server. I intend to use old / refurbished Desktop for the NAS server. I am novice in hardware. Please let me know the step-by-step procedure
I notice the tutorial uses something referred to as "SMB", is this Samba? if so, I have this service available directly from my router and can attach a NAS drive to it via a simple USB plug but I have been told several times not to use it as Samba is a high security risk. Comments please
Yes SMB is samba. Also a NAS will always be better than the feature of the router because a NAS has a stronger CPU, more RAM and can support more drives

What happens when you fill those 3 hard drives with 1.5TB while your parity drive has only 1TB of space? What if one of those 3 hard drives die but the data isn't saved onto a parity drive?
Parity has to be => largest drive. I don't ever use this method of filesystem design; I prefer ZFS with a Z1 (RAID5) pool. This means you have to have all same size (and type really) of hard drives/ssd/nVME. But your data will be protected. TrueNAS and TrueSCALE supports ZFS. Linux can support it with some effort (manual admin). unRAID I believe has ZFS support now.

NAS with old disks is a stupid idea, they might already have bad sectors and keep developing new ones forcing the NAS to resilver all the time.
It would be wise to low-level scan them with drive vendor utility first.
