Jonathan Majors sadly accepted the perseverance award at Friday's Hollywood Unlocked Impact Awards.
The actor, 34, who has been living quietly since he was convicted in December of beating his ex-girlfriend, was honored as 'an someone who has proved that no matter what difficulties they endure, they will continue to seek to inspire.'
As part of his sentence, handed down in April, The Harder They Fall star was forced to complete a 52-week in-person domestic violence intervention program.
'I guess folks want to know about the last year,' Majors remarked as he began his 17-minute statement, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
'As a Black man in the criminal justice system, I felt anger, I felt despair, hurt, astonishment. When they grabbed me up out of my flat in handcuffs, I didn’t feel like all that,' he continued, referring to a screen that had just showed highlights from his different performances.
'I didn’t feel like Jonathan Majors, Mr. Creed, Mr. Kang; I felt like a little scared, weak boy,' he explained, adding, 'despite the backing and evidence that was in my favor, I knew s**t was awful. And it was horrible because of who I was and what I am. This is what happens to Black folks all too often.'
