SWFL Eagles ~ Rock 'Em Sock 'Em E's! Two Rounds Of Rumbling! 😊 1.25.21

  • M flies in with a stick and Harriet will get up and the E's are ready to rumble! They go at it with one another for a few minutes - Harriet is up to give one a bite as M flies in with some grasses. Then back to rumbling! Harriet finally breaks up the sibling rivalry by covering them and brooding! Whew!
Later, M is on the chicks and he gets up and the E's are ready for round two and here they go! He tries to give them a few bites of food in between the bonks...then he also will do the next best thing - just cover them up! lol
This is all a normal part of the eaglets developing their pecking order in the nest. I think they are just getting started though so get ready to fasten your seat belts! lol Thank you for watching!
Video captured & edited by Lady Hawk
Thank you SWFEC , hosted by Dick Pritchett Real Estate, for allowing us the opportunity to view these amazing eagles.

Sibling rivalry is seen on most Bald Eagles nests in various degrees and can be an important lesson learned. If an eaglet can't survive in a nest where food is provided, the chances of them surviving in the wild when they are on their own is not as good. Survival rates for first year eagles can be rather low as some never learn to hunt for themselves and are not as adapt at stealing food from others. The most demanding chicks do tend to get the first share of food. This does ensure that should food be scarce, the strongest chick will have a greater chance for survival. It is a rare nest where sibling rivalry never occurs. Sibling rivalry varies between nests - depending on food availability and the age between the eaglets. Siblicide sometimes occurs, but is generally due to lack of food, not an inherent dominant tendency. Sibling rivalry teaches lessons which will help them both survive. Sibling rivalry lessens as the eaglets get older & is usually finished by the third week. The rivalry seen at SWFEC is mild when comparing to other nests over the years. Remember when watching cams you view nature in the raw - this is their world. We are only spectators! It brings new appreciation to nature when you see how these magnificent eagles survive in the wild.

They are seriously vicious with each other. I don't recall any other Es being as aggressive with each other constantly as these two are. Though 1 is more aggressive to the other. It can be hard to watch. What is amazing is in how each year is so different, no 2 years are the same with the nest, each has it's own unique qualities and events. I really hope these E's settle down though as they can really hurt each other as they get older.

I have seen no deaths on nest this season because of sibling rivalry, all deaths have for other reasons. I have been watching Eagles for 12 years and have never seen it, the two that died (3&5) on this nest were the dominate ones and they just passed. I am sure some Eaglets have passed but it is not common.

Thanks for the teaching and perspective, LH. I came to my first eagle nest observation after the 2016 The Landings Great Horned Owl nest. Fearsome birds the GHOs are, the owlets are so cuddly and sweet with each other. Then when they fledged I saw this and literally couldn’t watch at first. I don’t think I could appreciate Eagle sensibilities and their life through their lens, only through mine and it felt abhorrent. I’m getting better at seeing it as their way for their own reasons which I likely will not fully get. I also trust Harriett and M15 for the terrific parents they are. No blood drawn and when the head bonking competition gets too bad the parents sit on them! I also wonder if the squirrel pelt will be this years Stuffy? Remember that big Fisher that spent such a long time in the nest, also early on one year?

Me too. It's too hard to watch. I hope this is a phase that subsides when they get older. I'll peek in now and then.

I know in the scheme of things, this rivalry is common, but it’s so difficult to watch when it’s not “cute” anymore. This is raw nature in its finest form and we are so fortunate to be a part of it. I’m just hoping their bonking won’t become a tragedy. Bless them both. Thank you Lady Hawk. ❤️

One of them grabs on and shakes the other like a dog with a toy.
They are so strong and vital.
And it seems like they only eat for energy so they can keep on fighting.
I think H and M have their work cut out for them.
    Wonderful to watch.
I’m coming up on my first 12 months of watching soon.
15 and 16 didn’t have egg teeth and they were a little bit older but nowhere near as aggressive as these two.

Looks like they are both pretty much just as aggressive and even as the other with their ages being so close, causing the "battle of the wills and seniority"!! Yes, we may need to prepare ourselves for whatever may come, but because there is usually no lack of food here and Harriet and M are on the ball and will try to find ways to stop it if necessary with extra tandem feedings etc..., maybe all will turn out okay. This shows how it can go in the wild for survival of the fittest, and some chicks are just more aggressive than others. These two could hurt each other... Praying they start to eventually calm down, and I also might have to wait a bit myself to watch if this keeps up. After watching nests for a while now like others, I have learned to be prepared for heartache, accept what is and what I can't control from my home. It is what it is... Hopefully, these cutie pies will just give up being "baby brats" and both be strong fledged eaglets one day. No matter what, they are so precious, Harriet and M are beyond amazing parents, and all of us will go through another chapter of their lives together, hopefully with mostly great memories. 💕💕 Thank you Lady Hawk for all that you do, xoxoxo!!, ❤

The Eaglets are going to be strong by the time they fledge~ Do these Eagles offspring fly to the east coast of Florida or nearby to set up their own nests and mate with other Eagles?
