    Cool video series. I have a small 10x40 yard so it is pretty easy to pull by hand every coupl3 weeks since I only get weeds in the corners back corners where the wind brings the seeds in and deposits them, the rest of the series I’ve enjoyed.

    Just purchased Tenacity today, did not know you can use Tenacity the day after seeding. Was going to use Tenacity first and wait a few weeks before over seeding. This helps me stay within the window of over seeding. Thank you!

    Actually, you can use other types of herbicides besides Meso/Tenacity when seeding, but since it is safe for your type of grass, it's probably the best choice. I know when I was seeding my Zoysia I bought some Quinclorac (great for crabgrass) and I remember looking at the label (which everybody does, right?), it said it is safe for applying before seeding, during seeding, during germination, on established and even dormant Zoysia awns. My front lawn is Zoysia and it's filling in very nicely this year, but I'm going to redo my back lawn (about 10,000 sq. ft.) and put down some Kentucky Bluegrass so I'll definitely be using Tenacity myself. I don't recall but I think 2, 4D is safe on most turfs during seeding as well. 2, 4D is a great and inexpensive broad leaf herbicide. Most (at least many) herbicides that contain multiple products for a broad spectrum of control have 2, 4D listed as the first active ingredient. One reason is it kills so many types of weeds and another reason is because it is so inexpensive.
    Did you put down fertilizer or iron supplements in those two weeks?

      Good ‘ol glyphosate will do the trick. I typically apply it 2-3 times in a span of about 2 weeks to completely wipe out everything. I continue to water in between application so I can see any survivors. Technically you can plant seeds same day as your last glyph application, reason is glyphosate has already broken down by the time seeds sprouted. But, I don’t practice this technique, I wait another week before I put the seeds down. 👍🏼

    I love Tenacity, but I cannot use it because it's not safe to use on a Zoysia lawn or I'd have used it on my recently renovated lawn. It's a bummer...it really is a great product. :-/ I did a total renovation including renting a sod cutter and removing 2 inches of soil to lower my lawn, which removed most of the weed seeds too, but I still have some minor weed issues that are coming under control with 2, 4D and Quinclorac. The Goose grass has been removed by hand until it dies off this winter and I can put down some pre-emergent herbicides next year to get the rest under control. Just as a heads up, a lawn care professional told me for best results, you should rotate which pre-emergent you use so you're rotating the type of pre-emergence herbicide every 1-2 years so you do not build up a resistance. I love the transformation you had in just those few weeks. I was cracking up when you pulled out the tiller and used it to mix the top dressing, and like me, you were so excited to get the job going you overlooked cleaning the tiller and weed seeds first. Thank goodness for Tenacity!

      Hi and thanks for the message I am from Puerto Rico and I have Zoysia Manila on my lawn I am a super rookie on this but I am trying to find zoysia seeds for overseeding and cannot find them. As a comment they recommended my Basagran for thin leaves and confront for round leaves weeds I applied them a few days ago already seeing the effect on both. I think it will take me a full month to try to see the full results and then planning to cut, detach, aerate, topdress and fertilize wait 2-3 weeks cut and see the results any imput on zoysia will be great. Thanks

    • @Troy-Echo
      @Troy-Echo 4 роки тому

      @@rondapro Charlie, there are several types of Zoysia grass. There are 3 basic types, and the type from Japan is the only one that can produce seeds, or a hybrid using this Japanese type of Zoysia. I used Zenith Zoysia seed which is SUPER small, but 1 pound of seed can cover 1,000 sq. ft. so it goes a long way. I bought mine off of amazon.com and the vendor was (I think) Super-Sod. Last year they had weather issues and didn't get the seed harvest they expected so I had to buy 3 bags of 2 pound bags of seed for 6 pounds total for my 5,000 sq. ft. front lawn. Bad weather delayed me putting down my seed and it did not establish enough to where I could put down a pre-emergent herbicide to fight off winter weeds so my yard is a mess this year, but what young Zoysia made it though the winter (which was most of it) is already green so I'll be able to use some post-emergent herbicides to fight back those weeds. The Zoysia is already pushing out above ground runners to spread through the rest of the front lawn so 95% of my lawn should be fully covered in Zoysia before our first frost which is usually the last week of October, but I'll be able to put down a pre-emergent and keep 99% of the weeds out. Honestly, I'm still pretty excited with the current growth considering how late I had to put down seed. I do not know how well Zenith Zoysia will mix into your existing Zoysia as some Zoysia has thin blades and others have medium blade so you'd want to make sure the blade thickness is close and the normal color is close if you cannot find the exact seed type you want. Or you can just fertilize normally and allow your existing Zoysia to spread. Your soil test will tell you exactly what fertilizer to put down. I'm due to put down some 16-4-8, but I'm going to put down the 16-4-8+iron because iron is a micro-nutrient that gives your lawn a deeper green. I also suggest seeing if you can find some Milorganite. It has a little nitrogen so be careful how much nitrogen you put on your Zoysia as too much nitrogen can cause thatch problems, but the Milorganite is a great food for a lawn as it is organic matter. If you bag your clippings you'll probably want to put back a little more fertilizer and Milorganite to make up for the material removed by bagging your clippings. If you don't have many weed issues, just mulch the clippings using a good mulching blade. Personally, I'm currently bagging all of my clippings because I want to remove as much weed seed as possible, but once I get my weeds under control I'll stop doing that. I found a lot of great information at "Lawn Care Academy" too. Best of luck!

    • @Troy-Echo
      @Troy-Echo 4 роки тому

      @@rondapro Charlie, if you are having trouble finding the same seed you put down, just get a soil test if you haven't already, put down the correct fertilizer amounts per the soil test, and allow the Zoysia to spread naturally. My last soil test is telling me to put down X pounds of 16-4-8 per every 1,000 sq. ft.. I'll probably get some 16-4-8+iron as iron pushes a little more green into the grass as a micro-nutrient. I also suggest putting down some Milorganite if you have access to it. Do not put down that much, or adjust the amount of nitrogen you put down to a little lower amount as Milorganite has some nitrogen in it as well. Milorganite is a great organic filler that is not fertilizer heavy that gives plants organic matter to use for growth. It smells, and if you look up how Milorganite is made it will make sense. :0) If you have some spots of dense Zoysia growth you can find a plugging tool on Amazon. I don't have the link, but the one I'm planning on purchasing for the exact same use is green and it has 3 rings you can put around the bottom that stop the plugging tool from going past the desired depth. The bottom of the plugging tool is slightly smaller than the tube above it so they are easy to remove from the tube. It's green...I don't recall much else? I do remember there was a 1 star review that was really dumb that had photos with it where the tool was beat all to crap like he was jumping up and down on it to get it to go into soil that had almost nothing but rocks, and he was saying it was a crap tool because the bottom bent. Well genius, it's made for going into soil, not cutting into rock. If your lawn didn't have pre-emergent herbicides on it from the winter, you can go to www.DoMyOwn.com and get recommendations from their professional staff on which herbicides you can use on certain weeds that will not harm your lawn. Their products cost a little more, but I don't mind paying a little more in trade for the professional help they can provide me. Also look for their 60 episode UA-cam video series where one of their staff that isn't a lawn care professional goes through the steps of fixing his lawn. I loved those because he made a few mistakes along the way and he points them out and tells you how to avoid them. He hides the names of the products he used because he has Bermuda Grass, and what works well on Bermuda Grass may harm other types of turf, so he didn't want people just buying what he used without talking to someone to make sure what they bought would fit their needs. I have Zenith Zoysia and 2, 4D is a great and inexpensive herbicide, and I also put down Quinclorac which is great for killing crabgrass and if I remember correctly, is also a broadleaf weed killer like 2, 4D. I double checked with the Super-Sod guy (3rd generation SOD farmer with 15,000+ acres of Zoysia) and both were safe to put down on newly germinated Zenith Zoysia. If you check into some university studies (I found this out on UA-cam), putting down more than one type of herbicide for a certain type of weed will give you something like 85-95 times better kill rates than just a single type of herbicide. I put this on my new Zoysia lawn before it was established enough to mow the first time with absolutely no harm, and it took out a lot of my weeds and my crabgrass too, and that was only doing half strength. I followed up with the other half of the mix for a split application and it finished off weeds that were not even on the list of controlled weeds, like Sedge. I had several spots of sedge in my newly germinating lawn last fall and the first application really weakened the weed, and the second part of the split application must have finished it off. I mowed for the first time several days later and I did not see any sedge last year or this year. Oh, if you buy the plugging tool, I'd recommend getting a few bags of top soil that has starter fertilizer in it to back fill the holes where you pulled the plugs from so the Zoysia can fill that back in quicker. This link is to a guy that owns a lawn care company in Utah. He has several videos that will help you figure out many different types of lawn issues and this one talks about pre-emergent herbicides, which are the best thing overall for stopping weeds besides having a healthy and full lawn of grass. That's the great thing about Zoysia! As long as you feed it properly and do not put down too much fertilizer, you do yearly core aeration (probably not required the first year), and put down a pre-emergent herbicide in the spring and fall (after the grass has grown in enough and is established), Zoysia will fill in so densely it will choke out many types of weeds. One thing many people do in areas where Zoysia goes dormant is put down annual Rye Grass so there is green growth in the cooler months, but I'm not sure if it gets cold enough in Puerto Rico for Zoysia to really go dormant for long, so your lawn care regime will be a little different because of that. Congratulations on your Zoysia lawn. I've seen many many videos of lawn care professionals and golf course attendants where they have all said they have Zoysia for their own lawn, or they wish that they had the right conditions around their house for Zoysia because they think it is just such an amazing grass.

      Reapply Tenacity 2-3weeks after the first application. Leave the weeds alone to die, do not pull them off.

  • @ddemier

    After applying Tenacity how long should I wait to re-sead? Does anyone know?

    • @ShortCutLawn
      @ShortCutLawn  3 роки тому

      Tenacity does not harm grass seedlings. So you can apply anytime.
      That’s the main appeal of Tenacity, it will kill most weeds during seeding but not the grass seeds itself.
      Just be mindful of the application rate, i go about 1/2 to 2/3 the recommended rate.
      Note: don’t use on Zoysia, Kikuyu, and Bentgrass.

      Guillermo, as much as I love bermuda I have no experience with it. A lot of people overseed with rye and a lot of people hates it as well.

    did you spray a growth inhibitor? Otherwise I don't get how your lawn can barely have grown in height in two weeks.

    • @ShortCutLawn
      @ShortCutLawn  5 років тому

      No i did not use any growth regulator.
      (My answer, copied from a similar question)..
      “Considering that I watered this thing 3 times a day, you’re right this should have been over grown at 17days. I did a “clean up” mow four days in that maybe chopped 1/2 inch off. This bluegrass has compact growth in nature plus i trained it to grow between .5-.75 inch. At this mow height the grass plant itself “mutates”, the grass’s inter-nodes grows so close to each other and that keeps the grass plant from having vertical growth.
      ....to simplify the answer, the grass plant weren’t growing vertically but rather the grass blades were growing longer and mostly sideways. “

    I just bought tenacity with a surfactant and I have about 2000 sq foot backyard that I started working on finally after moving into a new house 1.5 years ago. I must say it was a mess and so far rototilled half so far out of all weeds and used Anderson’s organic fertilizer along with Humic DG and Super Juice with amazing results but my question is can I apply the Tenacity now while new seeds are coming up . I am getting weeds in my new sod with the new germination. Not a lot but some. I was told you need to wait 1 year before using it on new sod and seed. Is this the case? I am putting down tall fescue grass in the northwest Arizona desert and watering nearly 5 to 6 times a day due to extreme drought and high heat. No rain in sight for the next 3 months straight.

    • @ShortCutLawn
      @ShortCutLawn  5 років тому

      Since Tenacity is both pre and post emergent herbicide i’d say you can put it down anytime. BUT not about the new sod rule that you mentioned, you may wanna do a little bit more research, last thing we want is to harm your new sod. Aside from that, seems like you got this whole grass thing down pretty good 👍🏼

    I applied my 1'st app of Tenacity 17 day's ago, and the 2'nd app 5 days ago to 10,000 sq ft of tall fescue to control mostly nimblewill, but less of other weeds also. So, far I'm not very impressed, at all. I followed directions, used a surfactant and blue dye. Any suggestions? Thanks John

    Hot tip! Avoid watering in direct sunlight in middle of day :) The heat and wind will help the evaporation and the watering is less efficient. The magnifying effect from sun-rays hitting the water-droplets will burn your grass, and all the hard work is for nothing. Best time is in the morning or evening.

      Surfactant is used on post emergent application so the product will stick to the leaves of the targeted weeds . I applied Tenacity here as a pre-emergent so surfactant is not needed.
