Wow, a descendant of Bimba! This guy is capoeira royalty! The takedown reminds me of tani-otoshi - you see it a lot in some TCMA as well. Did not realize there was so much grappling in capoeira. That dropdown to kick, OMG.
This is why capoeira scares me the most - they have a whole other vocabulary of movement

@Andrew I was going to reply the same thing. Also that style Batuque was a grappling take down style. Bimba adding that into the grappling that already existed in Capoeira really expanded its grappling capabilities. Its sad that Batuque has disappeared.

Really seems like the art kind of fills in gaps that other martial arts lack, rather than going into a recovery phase, you let the opponent feel as if their technique was successful, then punish. Really really cool stuff.

That body sweep is in karate, judo, and kung fu too. (I think its also in Silat, but I'm not sure.) Its one of those universal techniques that every art includes because its so natural for human movement and it flows out of a situation that happens so often.
The jinga step also keeps you constantly primed to pull counter.

I’d love to know where fighting cultures met at whatever point in time. But I feel we’ll never know bc history is intentionally being erased. Martial arts are beautiful. The topic should be shown more attention. It’s where we all come from. We all decent from slaves and warriors. This fact should not be ignored. But pride should be shown for all. Not just chosen groups according to appointed fads.

18:07 - a higher-height variant of that ground kick would also be effective but it is at a smaller target - to the head, while you are on the ground, but you must snap your leg straight up to the head while on the ground to get that kick right.
That kick is called an "escorpiao" or scorpion kick. Usually you kick on either leg, depending how good the leg is.
Additionally, you can turn your back to the opponent in cocorinha (squat) with two hands on ground, wait for the opponent to come over you and then do the "escorpiao" to the face.

I do Capoeira, but also did many other martial arts. Capoeira is great for flexibility, fighting fitness, body awareness. What it isn't good at, and indeed makes your regular practice a liability: you do timing with someone else (fighting requires you to break timing, not get a rythm); there is little awareness of problems of exposing your neck and head; it doesn't make you aware of rear attacks; the minimal grappling, while making you comfortable to have body contact, doesn't teach you any proper close contact grappling (pretty necessary in all self defense).
Saying all this, I do think useful for training kicks, and indeed have used a bancao in self-defense, also if you're accurate with kicks, you can get a knock out. As a disclaimer: one-on-one fighting with punches and kicks is not self-defense, its combat.

    • @Alkis05
      @Alkis05 11 місяців тому

The rhythm thing is very dependent on how you train it. In my roda, we are supposed to punish people that are being too predictable. That is exactly when sweeps and other take downs happen. You are supposed to learn how break the rhythm with feints and missteps and variations. In a way, being rhythmic is feint. You are promising to keep it, but you have to be alert and brake that promise at the right time.
As for grappling, you need to train with specialists, like it is the case for any other striker.

Just like any martial art, it has its holes, but youre training athleticism in a combat context, with another person who is not standing still(at least in the games(roda)). The mestre my instructor learned under has a blackbelt in judo, so the takedowns were more emphasized in our classes. Though i wasnt really good at them, even though inliked them. To me, a lot of the standing movements reminded me of boxing, just more exaggerated. But really, capoeira movements are more akin to shadow-wrestling.

I’ve been training capoeira for a while and I would like to say this was a great video!
Vingativa part was very well explained. But for me I don’t think I would be able to pull off doing it against the punch. In capoeira training that move is mostly practice with countering an opponent’s kick. If the opponent has actual experience and can punch with good form, my untrained eye would not be able to react to it as that takedown.
Chapéu de couro is probably my favorite kick. I also do think that this kick can be used in a fight. I liked how he was talking about faints for making the opponent flinch to a vulnerable position because there’s a lot of that aspect in a capoeira game (jogo) as well.
He was a great teacher and I really enjoyed this video. Axé!

People don't understand capoeira is a way to educate the body, to gain speed, develop smartness and fitness.
There are very many tough capoiristas, but it is not because of capoeira, it is because of themselves.
Toughness is a thing beynd capoeira.

      Batuque
The attacking player tries to throw the defending player to the ground with blows from his legs. Mestre Bimba's father was a champion of batuque, and research seems to indicate that Mestre Bimba incorporated some techniques into his Capoeira regional

Thank you for the clarifications, I've done a fair bit of research of martial arts but there are aways things you miss about the nuance of specific arts when you have such a broad research topic this really helps to understand the history and culture associated rather than just the techniques I've come to understand.
      Thanks :)

I think one thing is that every martial work in a way that it make you develop a fight intelligence And this is for sure a good reason to seek for experience in the more martial arts possible as they all have different approaches with the idea of fight I would even say that some disciplines that only are sports like Judo, wrestling, and others could make you develop good skill to fight

Yes “The Ginga” has efficiency in a real street fight. That wasn’t originally in Capoeira as was born to “Masquerade” its fighting/combat nature. However, it actually made Capoeira even more dangerous and added more power and strength to all movements as it adds more kinetic/cinetic energy.
You got defeated by a Brazilian Capoeirista pal “Gingando” all the time hahaha.

Yeah, I think people just don't know or think about that. That being said, some people also don't realize that those practitioners incorporated moves that are not part of the game and had to work on the transition from play to real combat. Which they did probably with more rough sparring or straight up real fights.
