- The opulent Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild is located on the breathtaking French Riviera, at the top of Cap Ferrat. It was built between 1905-1912 during the 'Belle Époque' by the Baroness Beatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild, the daughter of the wealthy banker Baron Alphonse de Rothschild. The villa was designed in the style of an Italian palazzo, with a facade of delicate pastel pink. The villa houses a vast collection of over 5,000 works of art (mosaics, Gobelins tapestries, paintings by the great masters, porcelain and furniture). The villa is surrounded by beautiful gardens in French, Spanish and Japanese style. Musical fountains bring the French garden to life every 20 minutes.
On her death in 1934, the Baroness donated the property and its collections to the Académie des Beaux Arts division of the Institut de France and it is now open to the public.

How to get there - The Villa is located 10km from Nice and 15km from Monaco in Saint - Jean - Cap - Ferrat. From Nice you can get bus 81 from Place Garibaldi and it stops right in front of the Villa.

I visited this masterpiece twice and loved it each time. The tragedy is that the Baroness died only 2 years after living in her splendid mansion. We have to enjoy life while we can.
We spent 7 glorious summers in St. Jean Cap-Ferrat. June to September. We visited the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild villa many times. Absolutely exquisite!

I visited five years ago. THis does not show the upper gardens which for me were the equal of the house and lower garden. There is a wonderful succulent section, and many others grouped artfully by landscape designers and kept up by many gardeners. The view is even better from spots in that upper garden...I would love to go daily with my easel and paint the views but not allowed I am sure. THere is a bus connection from Nice but tricky to find and you get not much help from local tourism information spots even if you speak some French...they just want desperately for you to go away. Nice is too packed with foreign tourists and the French except merchants hate that. Smaller places are better, little villages up in the hills above Nice and Cannes.
