A day of drama unfolds at jungle school as the medical clinic deals with two seriously ill orangutans. Group Five student Erik is missing school and looks very sorry for himself as his head infection continues to cause concern, while fourteen-year-old Mia’s life hangs in the balance after a parasite infection leaves her dangerously anaemic. She needs a blood transfusion, and the search is on for a compatible orangutan donor.
Outside the clinic, classes carry on as usual. Jumbo gets a lesson in how to speak orangutan when babysitter Letha tries to teach him how to kiss-squeak. Neta discovers a new favourite food when the Group One infants learn about the secret treat hidden inside a rubber tree. A remarkable friendship begins when three-year-old Wine ditches lessons and approaches one of the macaque troop that always accompanies the students. She shows extraordinary patience as she persistently reaches out to the young monkey. Oddball Yutris, on the other hand, finds out the hard way that rejection can be painful when he won’t take no for an answer from an older student who doesn’t want to cuddle.
Two refugees from a Thai circus, Sampit and her son Sawadee, get a second chance at living semi-wild on a pre-release island. They lived on Palas Island after their rescue, but were brought back to base 6 months ago when the young mother became dangerously underweight. Now the vets decide it’s time to risk another try at letting them fend for themselves. Two gentle males, Satria and Grappa are selected to accompany the little family.
Over at the sister sanctuary of Samboja Lestari, the adult sun bears are beginning to explore their new home after their transfer from Nyaru Menteng. Fleur and Si Bear are introduced to a small training enclosure where they learn the ‘shocking’ truth about fences. And Romeo, at thirty one, one of the oldest orangutan inhabitants, displays his dominance over his island sanctuary.
