MF DOOM and The Boondocks, Misfits in Arms

- For a handful of DOOM fans, Adult Swim served as the platform that introduced them to the enigmatic rapper, much of this had to do with Aaron Mcgruder's use of DOOMS music in his show The Boondocks. Ironically much like DOOMS music the Boondocks is widely underappreciated by the mainstream.

This was my first exposed to doom I just did t know it till this video
@@Donny__JP my first was in a groupchat. Mf’s told me about mf doom and his music changed me 😤💯
it’s weird, i grew up watching the boondocks but never made the connection. now as a major MF DOOM fan it’s actually dope as hell to see they’ve worked together. solid vid m8
thanks man! hope you rewatch of the series, it’ll feel like a new experience now i bet
Ditto
EXACTLYY! When I started listening to MF DOOM I thought the beats were similar to the boondocks.
same fucking here bro
MF Doom also has tracks in the very first saints row
Fun fact: Gangstalicious is voiced by Mos Def who is also a huge DOOM fan and one of the greatest M.C’s ever, as well
I never knew yasiin voiced him holy fuck that’s funny
This show is so much more than I realised, they have a bunch of 'guest stars' it's amazing work of genius n art
Did not know that. One of my biggest regrets nothing going to see mf doom and mos def do they're concert together.
@@NoEnemiesRahim listen to dave talib and yasin talk show he sound just like that when he talk
Yeah I think snoop dog and bust a were part of thugnificents crew
The Boondocks put me on to DOOM years before I even knew who he was. Going back to watch the series and hearing ALL CAPS start playing was a trip and a half.
Facts
happened to me 2 days ago
I’m old so I was already into doom but, I thought it was Fancy Clown in the first season 7th ep? All caps could def have been first I dunno that was like 03 lol
I'm in the opposite camp. I loved DOOM for years before peeping boondocks and when the tracks show up I was like: "Yooo! DOOM!"
What episode is that?
MF DOOM blasting in my car as me and my friend parked at our college hotboxing and listening hard to the lyrics of Madvillainy is a cherished priceless memory. RIP to the villain.
that’s so sick, i love memories like those that are tied to the music. beautiful.
@@AnAbsurdExistence ty coincidentally it was in Maryland too the same state the Boondocks is set in
Another deep cut in the Oprah episode, Bushido Brown says “You come straight outta a comic strip” which references the Boondock’s origins and also the official All Caps music video.
so true, i forgot to mention that!
Also its a direct reference to Jim Kelly from Enter The Dragon.
@@otakusamsay1953 & thats why its a perfect one liner. ticks so many boxes in one shot
I thought it was because boondocks started as a comic strip in the newspaper
@@otakusamsay1953 yes str888 from Enter The Dragon movie
been a huge fan of the boondocks and only recently got into MF DOOM and didn't even realize that his music was in the show
Same here actually
Same here
try watching some of these episodes again!
Facts I listened to all caps and was shocked. Didn’t even know that was him
Same. Crazy to look back on. And I always thought the boondocks had good music. Turns out I was a MF DOOM fan before I even knew it.
I remember having a vague feeling of "I've heard ALL CAPS before" when listening to it recently and for the longest I couldnt remember where it was from..then I got to binging The Boondocks while cleaning and sure enough that's where my memory was.
First introduction to Doom was in 11th grade back in 07. I was coming out the classroom to lunch, and a couple friends were huddled up. I joined the circle and one of them had Operation Doomsday album and another one pulled it up on their iPod classic. Ended up taking my friends iPod home and I listened non stop, between classes and now through 13 more years of life. Till this day still one of my favorite albums.
that’s awesome, thanks for sharing. I love how unique everyone’s “origin” stories are 😼
Did you gave him his ipod back?
@@whyareyouusinglightmode2098 same thing im wondering xd
@@whyareyouusinglightmode2098 nigga robbed his “friend”, he said this was in 07 in highschool lol
It’s my favourite doom album I think
Damn watching this was a blast from the past. adult swim from 2000-2006 had the greatest run of shows. brings a damn tear to my eye. long live MF DOOM!!!
2005-2009 was adult swim’s peak
It was my introduction to DOOM, and I didn't even know it.
Years after I'd seen the show several times, a friend of mine in college introduced me to DOOM. I was into it, wanted to hear more, so I dove in head first. Came across "Strange Ways" at random, and instantly recognized it. Then the other songs featured on the show followed.
10 years later, he's still my favorite rapper.
RIP to the legend.
My first introduction to DOOM was in high school when I started listening to Joey Bada$$ and his 1999 mixtape which had 2 tracks originally produced by the villain himself. But when my brother put me onto Boondocks I was hooked immediately, I came to appreciate the show way more when I heard DOOM tracks in a few episodes
My first introduced to MF DOOM hip hop dx.
Me too seventh grade 2012
Pennyroyal is so good... and relatable
The very fact MF Doom music was in the Boondocks, and I didn't notice it for the longest time. It was literally at the *end credits* of the episode; no wonder DOOM's music was so familiar.
I'm a huge Gorillaz fan and particularly thankful they introduced me to Del and Doom.
What is Del?
@@ib482 Del the Funky Homosapien, I think.
@@ib482 del tha funky homosapien or deltron 3030...that's a lot to go through but worth it. My first stop with Del would be DEL And AMP LIVE. Yo and don't forget to check out Dr.Octagon.
Which track?
@@kko9329 doom is featured on November Has Come off the album demon days. I don't think he's on any other Gorillaz tracks but I can't remember for sure. Del is on a handful of Gorillaz tracks most notably Clint Eastwood and Rock the House off the self titled album 🤘
I remember watching these episodes and actually didn’t know who he was at the time so it’s mind blowing because now he’s in my top 5
who’s your top 5?
@@AnAbsurdExistence ok so I’m not totally sure about my 4 & 5 spots so he’s actually top 3 for me.
TuPac, Eminem, MF DOOM, then Idk I recently put Esoteric at 4 then possibly a ton of others and I could be in there myself potentially too lol
@@AnAbsurdExistence oh yeah I forgot the last upload on my channel is an Art of War remix . I’m just a broke independent artist but fr DOOM is a huge reason I started rapping again. I have so much love for that man 💯 and for the music/culture
I’ve loved the boondocks years and years ago, and I’ve been getting into dooms music for a few years now. How am I just finding out they was playin doom tracks on there?!🤬
try rewatching some, it’ll feel like a new experience 😂
First exposure was my Spotify recommending accordion. Then I never listened to madvillainy. My first time really looking up and listening to who DOOM was was the mouse and the mask. Then I went from there. TMATM is still my favourite DOOM album, but the czarface collabs are making good competition
I was a MF DOOM fan who just found out about this.
Explains the nostalgia that I always get listening to em’.
When EP11 first aired I remember jumping off the couch yelling at everyone in the room about MF DOOM and how stoked I was to hear his music in the episode. and they were like, "Yo stfu I can't hear the show" hahahaa RIP Dumille
this was my exposure to MF DOOM as 5 year old kid. that’s insane. some things will stick with you forever if you let it.
i started watching Boondocks shortly after discovering DOOM and it made me fall in love with his music even more.
Love this video. Damn I really wish we still had MF DOOM. Rest In Perfection Lordy
my first exposure of doom was very young. I was a bored teen so I watched random music videos and i came across his MV "monkey suite", after that i discovered him, Madlib, Quasimoto, J-Dilla, and other underground Hip Hop/Rap artists. So imagine hearing him in Boondocks was a surprise.
The first I heard of MF DOOM’s music was when my friend mentioned the Gorillaz song ‘November has Come’ which featured him. When i heard ALL CAPS in the Oprah episode I remember not even paying attention to the scene and focusing more on the music. This got me back into DOOM’s music and subsequently Gorillaz for the previously mentioned song.
Dude, I've struck Gold with this channel. So many esoteric, subtle references, editing and music choices only a few will pick up and appritiate. But it must be cherished. Rare to find such a good channel! Currently binge watching all of your videos. I know it sounds corny, but i think if we randomly met over a beer or something IRL then we would be in complete disbelief with how much we have in common. The Internet is truely a godsent for people like us. We live on different sides of the planet, yet share the same niche interests and consume much of the same content. MF Doom, commentary channel drama, esoteric media, icebergs and internet culture references. All the good shit. Keep it up, man! Let's fucking goooo!
The Boondocks served as my first introduction to MF Doom and a number of Wutang songs, particularly Raekwon and Ghostface. The show was filled with great tracks and references! Now that the internet is a thing, its great to finally know which tracks made their way into the show bc you just didnt know back then!
Originally my first exposure was on a Tony hawk game with a song called put your quarter up, I just got into atmosphere and they did that track with him and Aesop rock same time I heard Aesop rock for the first time too, I think the original artist is mole man I think the Tony hawk soundtrack was Tony hawk underground 2
Yessir!!!
I remember hearing it on American Wasteland
@@isaacreed33 that's it yes thank you
@@isaacreed33 that was UnderGround2
@@JarrettSpinks THUG2 had aesop's song "no jumper cables" and american wasteland did have put your quarter up
Thanks for this video man. Boondocks was my first time hearing MF DOOM back in highschool. It was so fucking awesome having been into anime at the time, loving fight scenes and starting to see hip hop paired with it in amvs. Then to see that ON CABLE TV synced up perfectly, it was amazing, so hype.
Yooo, that's awesome. I remember DOOM was on Adult Swim hosting that one Christmas special thing. I actually first discovered him around the same time I started smoking pot haha, he is greatly missed I'm sure, and he is definitely and indefinitely will be a rap god
My first exposer to DOOM was a random Spotify playlist or album or something that showed up on my page little bit after the announcement of his passing in 2020, I might not have been the longest running fan but I love his music never the less and was sad when I found out he died
My first encounter with DOOM was not boondocks but it was Adult Swim. They just randomly played the ATHF song off the Mouse and the Mask album and I googled it immediately.. after that its all history. Until then I got most of my music from my older brother, but this was the first music I discovered without anyone's influence (aside from [AS] ).
I feel like that's a big part of why I love this mans music so much. I remember hearing his lyrics in awe, feeling like I found a treasure that no one around me knew about. The persona, the lyrics, the mask.. it all just spoke to me in a profound way and to this day I chase for scraps of any lyrics I haven't heard or analyzed for that feeling.. Unfortunately not much of that will happen now, but let his work live forever.. R.I.P. Villain!
I first discovered DOOM back in 2016 when my cousin had the vinyl for a doom album, it was madvillainy. I was blown away when i first heard it.
i got into doom through adult swim, but not because of boondocks. it was because back in 05 they were helping to promote the danger doom album mouse and the mask. i picked it up and it was like nothing else i'd ever heard.
The first time I watched ep 11 I immediately looked up the music and was hooked
Fantastic my guy. Love Doom, miss him. Love Boondocks miss it. Ima be sure to check out the Boondocks mixtape and rewatch some of the episodes you mentioned.
The first season of Boondocks was an utter masterpiece. Thanks for making this video!
Love the videos dude! Mf dooms career is so interesting.
I couldn’t agree more, thanks for the love.
All caps
1:38 even right here the, first time I saw them pouring the gems into the bag and heard the MF DOOM song, I immediately thought of the Superman cartoon of the robot stealing from the bank that’s even in video for MF DOOM’s PENNYROYAL. So cool how much synergy there is intentionally or not!
I was a fan of DOOM, and a fan of The Boondocks, separately before I noticed how much DOOM was in it. They knocked it out the park with the music choice in that series
Boondocks was such a goated show, i wish they still continued it 🤧
They were going to but John Witherspoon and Charlie Murphy passed away, RIP to the legends 🙏
Aaron is a genius even more after this video . Not only did he make an entertaining timeless comedy making fun of current events of that time without beating you over the head about it . They matched non mainstream music up with the lyrics putting the world on to the late great doom !!!!! Wild
I loved the boondocks, I’ve rewatched it several times, it’s stayed relevant through time and has aged pretty well thus far
You and this video were my first exposure to the boondocks and doom ty
Amazing Video. Love the breakdown, hope you make more stuff like this.
I had found MF DOOM a while ago on Spotify and was watching through Wingmen today. When I saw the MADVILLANY album at the end of the credits I felt nothing but confusion, as I had no clue on just how far DOOM stretched through media that I already enjoyed. Great video that explained all I needed.
great video g your channel is a under rated gem you deserve more views
I got into the show first and the artist a few years later but I re-watched the series a few times over the years and my ears are good at picking up musical samples I know. You got them all, great vid. 👌
I was a fan of DOOM before the Boondocks, My big brother put me on, but that Boondocks ep "Let's Nab Ophra" was the very first episode of the show I watched. The show hooked me in large part because of it's use of DOOM. I was only 14 then but I knew what DOOM was about as an artist and the fact that they used his music told me everything about what that show had going for it. Clear synergy from the begining.
Boondocks let’s nab Oprah was how I got into MFDOOM and he’s all I listen to now. I remembered I had such a hard time finding strange ways in the episode cuz the soundtrack didn’t list it.
I actually discovered MF Doom through that episode where Huey fights Bushido Brown. An "ALL CAPS" is a certified masterpiece in my opinion. Doom was a lyrical genius.
These two have played a large part in my life. Thank you two and thank you absurd for reminding me of this. We are all living off borrowed time, while the clock ticks faster.
My intro to DOOM was people on reddit who put him in their top 10 last year. To this day I have no idea what hes talking about, the music just sounds so good.
I’m so glad I grew up with what I did, you don’t realize it but everything just falls into place.
Brilliant! Amazing editing and informative. Keep up the good work! You’ll make it big one day.
My first time hearing doom was when they played raid that started my love for doom. Boondocks is goated and introduce me to doom at a young age I loved his music ever since.
I really enjoy your videos man
i was really late on mf doom cuz i dont live in the us and im 16, my fist exposure was i was watching tyler and earl meeting MF DOOM for the first time and i looked in the comments saying MF DOOM was "every rappers favourite rapper" so i give it a listen , it was all caps and i was hooked instantly and become a diehard fan but sadly two months later he passed away
RIP MF DOOM
I was vibing to all the music in this video even midnight stars and you. damn good song
These cuts are edited brilliantly!
Why TF am I tearing up at this? And, yeah; I linked this to the MF DOOM subreddit
instantly realized that chet baker was playing in the background.
love him.
@@AnAbsurdExistence you love Chet Baker and DOOM? Stop stealing my preferences bro
This video just popped up in my feed, I know it's a year old but I'll say that I actually discovered DOOM through listening to Nujabes. I had Nujabes radio playing and a lot of DOOM can on the station and slowly I started getting more and more into his music to where he's one of my favorite rappers now
Love your stuff keep it up 👍
Contribute MFDOOM
Grew up watching Doom rocking the open mic with a bandana on his face at Nuyorican in the village. Cool to see him progress thru the years and get the recognition wo ever asking for it. Goat emcee/producer
My first exposure to DOOM was through Gorillaz - November has come. I heard his voice and just had to find out more about him and his music.
I owe a lot to Adult Swim, specifically for introducing me to MF DOOM.
“Esoteric” like CZARFACE? Also using Avalanche in the intro is so perfect
For me, my first exposure to MF DOOM was actually a meme video from a few years ago which got me into MF DOOM. And just two years later I actually got to watch the Boondocks and heard the tracks.
Man my first exposure was for sure this show, but i didnt know who the singer was since im not a native english speaker. Year laters i found ur channel and watch ur vid about him and end up hearing his albums totally in love with DOOM character.-
Bro I remember when I was younger I saw my older brother watching the boodocks and i remember hearing MF DOOM music playing and at the time I was like “wow that some pretty cool music” but I was a lot younger at the time and now I’m a big DOOM fan and I never knew it was DOOM
Never knew the connection but it fits so perfectly into the "off-the -wall" concepts of The Boondocks. And Thank you as well.
It actually was my first exposure to MF DOOM, watched The Boondocks back in 2006 and was like yoo who is this rapping, it's so different. One of my friends at the time was like oh yeah man that's MF DOOM he's awesome. Rest is history, RIP MF DOOM.
In the "Thank you for not snitching" episode the first time i heard the parts in this video on the show after becoming a DOOM fan i instsntly noticed the references and i mean instantly.
My first DOOM experiece was the Rap Snitches instrumental
i loved watching the boondocks as a kid. Bought all 4 seasons a few years back for pretty cheap.
My first introduction to mf doom was Gorillaz's song November has come. Dug his style ever since but never really tried searching his own music until about 2015-2016 when I got more into rap.
I knew of and heard MF DOOM since before I ever saw The Boondocks. I just happened to catch an episode of The Boondocks at random and watched it from then on. I noticed MF DOOM had tracks that were on the show. I also remember seeing MF DOOM mentions popping up on The Boondocks and adult swim.
I was already hearing him so I just figured it was dope he was getting play and potential eyes on him.
Once I found out MF DOOM was Zev Love X I thought the whole thing was hilarious cuz I had always been wondering what had happened to him since KMD was straight done and I hadn't heard about Zev Love X doing anything else.
Boondocks did not put me on DOOM, but was glad that they did put somethings in the show.
My friend showed me DOOM last summer at the very beginning. Its so weird that he passed away so soon after discovering him. It doesn't feel like he's gone tho
I was just watching the first season of The Boondocks again and just being reminded how many DOOM songs they put me on before I even knew who dude was. I love it so much.
I was trying to find Raid for years, thank you.
Nice video dude
I was rewatching boondocks for the first time in a while and thought I was tripping when I kept hearing the MF Doom songs on the oprah episode and the references in the stop switching episode
I would be willing to bet that The Boondocks was my first exposure to Madvilliany but I didn't really make the connection until a re-watch years later after I had fallen in love with the album by itself. Nowadays on re-watches it's just so perfect, I love everything about both of them and they work so god damn well together.
Such an extremely enjoyable video
Sick video bro!
I distinctly remember Strange Ways in the bank robbery scene. It immediately caught my attention, but I had no idea what song it was. I was also young and dumb, so wasn't exactly adept to finding out what song it was. Years later I heard it and immediately made the connection. Love DOOM, and loved The Boondocks.
Funny enough, Boondocks was the first place I found him but the last place I recognized him.
Where I first knew of DOOM was on that Gorillaz track "November has Come". Years later, my first album was DANGER DOOM because 'Sofa King' was so fun to listen to on my Pandora's Nerdcore playlist. Then MM FOOD, then Madvillian, then earlier this year, I was rewatching Boondocks and I was like, "Oh hey, when did MF DOOM get here?"
Midnight, the stars and you..
I started listening to mf doom when gazzillion ear came out and ever since 2011 I was always listening to him. rest in paradise MF Doom
bro i never saw this connection i’m in awe tbh
Nice video
Watched boondocks growing up and loved the music in it but never learned of mf doom till around 2020 and still listen to his shi to this day
Great video man
thank you!
I was a huge fan of the Boondocks when it was on Netflix a few years ago but haven't seen it since. In that time I've also become a huge fan of DOOM, it's interesting to me that I enjoyed both at separate times and didn't know they had crossed path's
Worthy of note; MF DOOM actually voiced trailers for new episodes of the later seasons of the Boondocks on adultswim. I specifically remember one where not only did he narrate the trailer, but The Mask by dangerdoom was playing, though it was never heard in the episode
It’s crazy first watching the boondocks years ago then discovering DOOMS music now I’m rewatching boondocks and just heard DOOM during the Raid episode and now ALL CAPS playing during the Bushido fight glad to see one of my favorite channels Adult Swim and favorite artists MF DOOM cliqued up. RIP MF DOOM and GRANDAD
Great vid mate
thank you!
This Video Is Great, 1M Soon!
Watching let's nab Oprah before and after knowing doom is on it is A completely different experience
Loving every DOOM video you’ve put out, do you think you can cover KMD next? Bl_ck B_st_rds is one of my favorite records.
I adore The Boondocks, but found out about MF DOOM maybe only a year ago. That's dope!
