- For nearly 1,000 years, Afghanistan remained part of various empires, including the Seleucid Empire, Maurya Empire and Huns. Ashoka the Great introduced Buddhism in Afghanistan. Later Rashidun Caliphate, Umayyad dynasty, and Abbasid dynasty ruled over Afghanistan. During this period, Islam was introduced to the residents of Afghanistan. Later under the Ghaznavid Empire and Sultan Mahmud Ghaznavi, the Afghans became a great power.
