More work to make it right! Ford F250 steering upgrades

- Nothing comes easy for Louis ViTen. This steering and track bar setup is going to be awesome when finished. But I had to cut it short on this episode as I had to hit the road to film an episode of Roadkill. All is good in the Shed. we will be back and test this system out soon!

Dirthead Dave is the best! And not at all scared of janky Trans Ams.
I once commented.. roadkill and dirt head shed... Legends.
🍻 to both Dave's 🤘
Okay I haven't seen a new Roadkill episode in ages. I've got one of the Motortrend channels but it shows the same stuff over and over again.
@aguyinnc2865
Keep them on the loop setting 🤙
I love you guys.. wish I could spend a weekend wrenching on some junk with you guys with a cold beer in our hands.
Fred and Dave should do a surprise episode of roadkill. Get the boys back together! That’s what the people want!
Dave, you keep getting those gigs because we the audience totally enjoy your style and delivery of your skills with building rad rigs. Please keep it coming. Thanks
I appreciate it! Thanks for all the support out there
The name "Dirthead Shed" is nice, but "My Ford is falling apart...it's not even driving and it's tearing itself apart" also has a nice ring to it.
Good option for a second channel
I love episodes like this! Teaching how steering and suspension works, etc. and how to modify for your application. Thanks Dave! Love this channel!
Glad you’re digging it. I like making these videos too
Thanks for the video Mr Dave. Glad to hear about Roadkill. They are lucky to have you.
Thanks! I’m pretty stoked
It's always great to see you on Roadkill et all 😊
Thanks! I’m stoked to get those jobs still
Glad to hear and see you keeping on with the trend guys! I miss D.E.D so it's awesome getting to see you keeping it real on other shows maybe Fred will drop in sometime...
I need to go visit him
Great episode! Looking forward to seeing you on RoadKill!!!
Thanks! I’m back. It was a fun week
Just making sure you’re slammin key limes in the shop Chapelley
It’s been too long…. KEY LIME!!
Looking forward to seeing the wheeling vid, and your Roadkill contribution. 👍
Coming soon!
I'm impressed by this truck. I love my ford heavy duty trucks, and this makes me really wish I had the room and tools for a project
The manifold stud is just.. Ugh!
Love the videos
Just more work! Never a shortage
Stoked you get to be in another episode of Roadkill. I hope the move to Discovery won't be the end of the road for everything Motor Trend.
My hope is Discovery acquired them because they are profitable!
It’s a weird situation over there right now
Another excellent vid! Really like the tech stuff and you present it so well. That bolt flew up under the bonnet after it fell off a Dodge! Gravity did the rest! Congrats on the Roadkill gig! Catch ya later!
Thanks! Back to work now. Roadkill week was fun
Readers are great! I broke down and got some a while back when I turned 40; oh man, what a difference!!! I had no idea how bad my eyes had gotten for close up small stuff. I had 20/20 vision for most of my life. I keep a set at home, the shop, the farm, in the car... Ha! it's been a few years now, maybe it's time to upgrade to 1.25 from 1.00 for me... 🤣
Louis V is dropping parts for YOU Dave. It knows it will bring the Ford hater comments and drive engagement to boost the algorithm and grow your channel. The sacrifices Fords make for their owners is unparalleled. RAD!
Congrats on the roadkill gig!
Thank you. It was a fun week
Self removing Exhaust manifold studs, the ford modular motors best feature
It’s ridiculous
Great job as usual. I can’t wait to see the roadkill episode. You and Dave are truly my favorite motor trend people. And you are one of my top three UA-camrs keep up the great work Dave.
Thanks! I appreciate the support
I hope i can swing the motor trend app again so I can watch the episode! Love this kind of build video, keep em coming!
It’s switching over to the discovery plus or hbo max app
Aloha Dave, can't you move that drag link from the steering box to the front bolt on the right side nuckle. That would straighten it it up some and also give more leverage on that component to the outboard hole rather than a point closer to the nuckle. I dig your shows, I'm an older 4-wheeler and built several rigs in my years, but nothing as elaborate as what you build
We deal with all a lot of mud here in my territory. Keep up your awesome content, Aloha brother 🤙🏽
You are correct. It would put less leverage on it. But it would not get full steering angle at that mounting point. And this big ol truck needs all the angle it can get
Trying to remember when a chevy kicked out a exhaust manifold bolt ... nope, can't think of a single chevy doing that 😊
I would say dodge… but they pop manifold bolts like crazy too
I did my axle side trackbar mount with the same mount in the same location and mostly the same way.. and now I feel way better about it now that I see how you did it!
It’s tied in really well. Pretty stoked on it
Awesome work dude🤙🏼
Thanks Mark
This was a rad video!!!I really enjoyed how surprised you were that it all fit and worked once you got the ram installed 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you. Yeah , just work through all the little problems along the way
Louis will definitely will be good at "Trail Yoga." Love Dirt!
It has moves!!
That’s ALOT of tough tedious work making that All so clean and much more Functional 👏👏👏 As Usual With the BIG WHEELER MANTRA you make it look EASY which it’s not. I’ve quit on stuff for months I’ve gotten so frustrated with it. That looks SUPER good💪💪💪
Thanks! I sure hope it makes for a great driving truck. Need to get you or your bro to buy it. And have an excuse to drive to Alaska
@@thedirtheadshedThat’d be AWESOMENESS PERSONIFIED 😎 MASSIVE BIG WHEELER 💪💪💪 LAME need not Apply 🥶
Cool continuation video. On one of my favorites. Love that truck. Funny you saying it's falling apart just sitting. We beat and bang and pound our vehicles, using them for things they were never intended, and get mad when stuff breaks..lol. I do the same. I work the crap outta my TJ, dragging trees way too big, but its how we are..lol.
Yeah. They definitely get a workout
Project is coming along well as always
It’s getting there!! Hope to drive soon
@@thedirtheadshed Can't wait to see it out flexing and getting some time on the trails!
So cool seeing heavy duty components like this. Rad indeed Dave! And very cool about the Roadkill call!
And don't know why, but things like the engine mount gusset, are so rewarding though inglorious and things no on ever sees
I like the detail stuff too. I’ll look at it in a year and be like…. That’s cool, forgot about that
Magnets are good for holding down templates. I've got some little neo-gigity ones I scrounged from somewhere.
Nice. I could have used those
Dave, thanks for these videos. I’m a huge fan of your content. Keep it coming.
Thanks! Not stopping now
good stuff, thanks for another RAD video.
Thanks for watching!
Dave, Loui will forever kick your but. It will never be truly finished, I hope. Best project ever. Love it❤ Best of luck with David. Loui will wait patiently for your return. So will we 💪
I agree. Nothing is gonna come easy
There is a guy named Fred Williams that recommends that you wear a welding hood when running a plasma torch to protect your face. 😂
Sounds like a smart dude
@@thedirtheadshedI loved watching you two on MT. Glad you are both still educating and entertaining us with your skills and humor. Keep rocking it!
About to SAS my 720. Using a lot of your tips!
Those are cool trucks . Good luck with the swap
Great work as usual 😃
Thank you!
maybe slide some tubing on both side of the ps ram clamp and tac them in to act like stops. also you have some badass drills.
I plan on it.
Cool, Ford is done. Time to do some fab work! :fo2:
Ford almost done!! It’s lowrider season
Always love to see you on MT, but I LOVE this channel. By far my favorite on the old interwebs.
Thanks dude. I appreciate all of the support
Killing it man! Love the videos
Thanks! This year is gonna be full of good ones
Used a similar tie rod clamp on my setup and had to weld a piece of key stock on each side of tierod to keep clamp from slipping each way. Bolt holding ram to clamp tends to loosen up after a few runs too even torqued to 100ft/lbs. Just a FYI and something to keep eye on
Yep. It’ll definitely have a stop welded to the sides of it
Hey Dave, love your videos. Sorry but I just wanted to make a correction, the cylinder where the exhaust stud fell out was actually cylinder #6,not #1. On Ford products starting with the front passenger side (right side) it would be #1 and then it would go strait back numbering to cylinder #5 in this case. Since it is a V10. Then starting with the driver side (left side) it would go from #6 all the way back to cylinder #10. Just wanted to leave a note. Keep up the amazing work!
I should have know that. Remember it from my old 289
Try using heavy duty magnets to hold your cardboard template to your steel.
Good call
Absolutely happy to see you still on motortrend! They never should have canceled the show. Keep up the good youtube content dude!!!
Sweet stuff! I just got my 2004 Excursion with 2005 coil swapped axles and long arm 4 link stuff installed. I have the same PSC ram to install still, figured while I was already replacing a worn out steering box why not get the ports for the ram and a 2016 style steering box. A review on your ram experience would be good even if it's just a short diddy.
Sounds like a sweet project
The ole ford is like my jeep broke for no reason lol
Yep! They all fall apart
Roadkill?!! Don't be a traitor, Dave! D.E.D por vida!!! PS don't hit the truck something else is going to break...
I know!! But my DED phone isn’t ringing
Get it Dave!
Fully getting it
Love the honesty... .talk about a Chebby, Ford falls apart on the lift. I still say that my trailer pulls 30% better with Ford hubcaps on it.
I believe it
Looking forward to the episode of Roadkill ! Any possibility there could be a "janky Trans Am " involved ?! Don't forget your OSHA approved flip-flops...
Digging the fab videos man
Thanks so much. PLENTY of it to do
Did you just call cyl #5 a #1?? Oh it hurts my heart to hear that. Hahaha just busting your grapes. I know what you meant. Another great episode.
I don’t know
I love your tenacity and ability to just figure things out!! Awesome!!!
Thanks . I like the problem solving part of the job
Thanks for sharing this video glad to see ole louie getting the steering fixed up
Getting close now!
“I just made this little gusset” aka prison shiv.
That’s what I thought too
🍻 from Colorado.. hope to.see you on the trails 2024.
Not in Cali though.. tooo many Damn rules for a visit.
Another good vid✌️
The support.
Awesome, keep em coming Dave, like videos, the only drama in the videos, will the vehicle fall apart? Haha
Glad you dig!
Boxing in that axle mounted track bar bracket is gonna allow it to hold mud and water. Maybe leave a slot at the bottom to drain?
It has drain holes . I’m always making sure to not build water traps
Right on! Love the content please keep them coming. Watching from the west side of Wa.
Little wins!!!
They add up!
So fun to watch you fab, man. Keep it going Dave.
Thanks! I’m hustling
I’ve seen a lot of V-10 triton engines blow spark plugs out of the head, and those exhaust manifold studs break off. Love the ford comments 😂 nice work on the steering man!
He has a newer 3V V10, highly unlikely to pop spark plugs. That was a 97-2000-ish 2V non PI head issue.
True
Yep. All kinda normal problems for these
If you use a white out pen you will have a fine line that won't blow away. Don't use the bottle with the brush.
I need to grab one of those pens
For the broken exhaust bolts, cracked manifold, put headers on it the stock manifold are terrible.and the headers will help fuel mileage also.
Anything to help the mpg is welcome
Thanks Dave, love your videos, appreciate your Ford content!
Thanks for watching them
Awesome you're still getting calls from Motortrend gigs. You're always a great addition to any show. Were you wearing earplugs because you were welding overhead and needed to keep sparks out of your ears? And those manifold bolts are a huge pain because the spring bucket is right there in the way
I wear earplugs almost anytime in the shop. Kind of got in the habit years ago
Great job on the boxing and gussets on the trackbar/panhard brackets. Too many people underestimate the forces on these. The forces and break frames if not well braced.
It’s like I’m building/fighting my own rig! Good stuff
Great to see You doing stuff with MT as well. 🤟😎
Looking good!
It always feels great to see all the hard work you put in come together and working the way it should. I just got to a point on my 69 Firebird’s rear suspension that’s been way too long of an on going upgrade but I’m a few welds away fro being able to drive it again after a year and half of upgrades and repairs.. love seeing it come together for ya!! Another great video!!
Much groovage amigo, always diggin your videos!!
Thanks so much
Getting close man ! Hang in there!
Just a little more work when I get back
With that exhaust bolt falling out, it'll have that familiar 5.4 triton sound! 😂
Ugh. I wanted it to not be junk
@thedirtheadshed my old 5.4 has 225k on it. Sounds like garage, but runs great. It doesn't even have any check engine lights on. We have to keep these old Ford's going strong. Mom's spaghetti is my favorite but Louis is growing on me. Keep the videos coming!
One thing that Ive always admired/wondered about is on all these rigs there are so many modifications made to the driveline, suspension, etc. Whats the recipe to ensure the motor doesnt leave you stranded on the trail? Do you typically upgrade or choose to keep it stock but do basic maintenance and if so what are the big engine items you address before hitting the trail?
I’m a big fan of bone stock engine. Simple usually proves that it is best
Have fun on the road kill show 👍👍
YES!!!!!!!!! Wrapping up the F250!!!!!
Getting there!
@dirtheaddave They make cheaters that fit into your welding hood behind your clip for the glass. They work great. I stack 2 because I have a double size glass. And that gives me full coverage.
I have seen them. Need to give it a try
Dave you make me want to upgrade the steering on my Jeep. Keep on trucking!
I guess no plasma cutter torch is kinda dangerous but......
The torch just gets into the hard to reach spots better
seeing that draglink cross over the tie rod is just killing me!!! it just seems like such a bad design. any way its awesome to see you doing so many "collabs" and guest appearances. it just shows how special and awesome of a guy you are,
Support
Much appreciated
All the Tritons seem to do that at some point, I've had the 2v and 3v v10's all the way out past 300k miles, manifold studs will break here and there but I never fix them. Happens on the Chevy LS platforms as well, every 5.3 has at least one broken stud. My mechanic got really good and welding a goober on the end and spinning them out. Doesn't seem to bother aluminum heads at all.
I’m half tempted to make a video on ways to fix them
@@thedirtheadshed It kinda sucks on 3v, never done a 2v but I’m sure it’s not any better. I can send you my lisle drill template if you want, I hope I never have to use it again. Lol. Lisle 68500, good for all the ford modular motors
@@thedirtheadshed Give it a shot, plenty of people would be interested if successful. Perhaps a non conductive ferrule to keep from migging to the header but guiding the wire to the stud? Always have the ez out method, bleah.
I’ll look into it. Thanks
At least you don't have Hemi exhaust manifold bolts!
Wife’s old truck had that problem
I’m a Chevy fan and I don’t wanna see your rig burn down. Killer videos Dave. Keep em coming wondering if you were talking to Mark C in SD ?
Yep. That’s the Mark
I missed the last episode, what's the reason for running drag link on the back hole making them criss-cross? I mean at least it works! Also curious if you ever put spacers inside your rams to limit their travel to match the steering stops. I did on mine but not sure its even necessary.
It needs to go there so the box/pitman arm match the knuckle/ steering arm. So I can keep max steering angle
I need to bring you my xj. Your blessed with a shop and welder and everything you need ty create awesome stuff. Yes I know hard work and opportunities go a long way to get those things but my younger years were pretty much wasted. I'm a million times better than I was in 2014 that's for sure. Anyway lol. Do you have a way to get in touch about building out my rig?
I don’t really build customer rigs anymore. I ran a shop in my younger years. Now I have a hard enough time keeping up with the projects I have here
I didn't say it last episode, but I can't ignore it. It looks like the steering should have gone to the inside bolt on the pass side and the drag link out to the furthest bolt to keep them from crossing. I'm not sure if that would play things into the diff cover, probably, it just looks odd (maybe it's the camera). Looking good though, did you cycle everything with the steering ram on it? I've yet to see a clamp that didn't slip and play havoc with steering on the trail - clamps make a little more sene on aluminum links, I don't think they have any place on a steel steering setup.
I agree it looks odd. But that is the way it’s designed. Tie rod out to clear diff cover. Drag link is inside and in same distance from ball joint pivot. That way it gets full steering angle.
@@thedirtheadshed yeah, I figured as much with how close things were looking. I love the fullsize stuff, it's nice to see something different smashing through the trails :D
Real cool Dave that truck is a real Beast. I know You would rather take a smaller truck on UA next time but I think this is the truck. 😁👍 I'm sure whatever You do will be cool.
Loui is dropping hints to put 5 psi turbo kit on when you fix the broken studs..
Imagine that, a ford falling apart while just sitting there. I'm not surprised.
Thanks for the great videos on steering upgrades. Your years of experience make it look easy! How many ton lift do you have? It seems to hold the Super Duty pretty well.
It’s a 9500 lb lift. I’m probably pushing it with this truck on it
Safe Travels
Thanks. It’s been a fun trip so far
I like your videos I just wish you would say RAD more often.
Working on it…
Just a 'mint fer yer 'rhythms.
I love you please take the screwdriver out of the limit strap and use a bolt.
Hardened chrome vanadium!
Could you have mounted the drag link to the top side of the steering arm with the same bolt that goes through the tie rod?
Yes. But it would lose steering angle that far out from the ball joint
Speaking of cool gigs, I watched the episode of you and Fred buying the orange Dodge Pickup in Idaho Falls last night and I'm wondering where that truck is now as I'd like to have it.
Steve Dulcich just bought it from Motortrend
@@thedirtheadshedI figured as much, thanks
Awesome dave. Nice thing with the hydro assist it takes a lot of stress of the track bar with the axle pushing against itself right?
Hadn’t thought another it that way. It could have some less stress
Nice work! Typical mod motor ford. I had one and will never get another, and I've had to deal with my sister's super duty for way too long.
