    As a black woman I just want to put out that Korean people seem to think all hairstyles where the hair is braided and long are called Reggae hair but it’s not. Dreadlocks, box braids, Fulani braids they are all different.

      Oh just as a side note, it's more of a Korean language thing, the first kind of black culture to be introduced to Korea was "reggae" and that was the first time they saw hair like that so they ended up calling it Reggae hair, rather than our meaning of Reggae it's just more like that's the name it's had since the beginning in Korean language/culture.

      @@XGaMeROo yes I’m aware. I live in South Korea and I know where they got that from. I just want to put it out there so that term can be corrected. That “reggae hair” doesn’t apply to every braided hairstyle that black people wear.

    Its nice to see there's an interest in other cultures' hairstyles! But...the moment he said "commonly known as Reggae hair" that let me know their interest in the hair style is based on pop culture trend and it's being used as a fashion statement to fit an imagine. That's unfortunate. Locs are apart of culture and even religion in countries like Jamaica (that most people know for Reggae). I'm going to put the responsibility on stylist to educate themselves on the style and not just how to do it. (Ask yourself if you would wear a hijab or a yarmulke just cause it looked cool. Locs and braids are culturally that serious.)
    And actually braid and crochet aren't the only way to start locks. Comb coils are the most common, then there's palm rolling, back combing, interlocking and the list goes on.

      I know the language barrier is probably a part of it so it's understandable. It would be safer to use a name for reference like Bobby Marley the Reggae singer in stead of Reggae hair. I've seen a few videos with styles like this and it's called "hip-hop". In America, hip-hop is basically seen as a lifestyle. Its not about a temporary outfit or hairstyle and it's not just about dance and music. People get offended when others treat it like just a cool edgy imagine to wear for awhile. So I hope videos like this along open conversations help us all learn for the future :)

If I saw a hanbok and said "it's so Kpop", I'd mean it's really pretty and graceful like when I've seen Kpop idols I like where it but I'm sure all the Koreans who don't even like Kpop would quite dislike me saying that.

      My comment was the same sentiment. I would never wear a hanbok just because I like K-dramas and Korean music and don't know anything about the culture. I grew up with Korean aunts and uncles and still wouldn't dare put on a hanbok cause I don't know enough about the culture myself! But my older brother who lives in Japan said that over there they think that copying the style and trying to make it as authentic is their was of showing like homage and respect. But goodness knows we're tired of our culture being copied for a fad so we're not flattered and don't see it that way.

    As a black woman who's subscribed to the channel and normally really enjoy the videos, I have to agree with a lot of other people in the comments that this made me a bit uncomfortable. I'm not sure how I feel about this video, but I do know that I don't feel great. I do think it's kind of nice to "learn" about this type of style and these techniques or whatever, I just wish it was done in a more respectful and less cultural appropriating way. A good place to start would've been to actually learn it from a black stylist. And maybe focus less on how "cool" and "hip hop" etc it is, and maybe try to bring in some of the history of it all.

    • @Superbananaballs
      @Superbananaballs 2 роки тому +50

      I agree. I am not black, but I am east Asian. In east asia there is so much colourism and racism so when people try to recreate hairstyles from black culture I just find it disrespectful. Since most people would see a black person and avoid them, but then tries to recreate their hairstyles? Also if someone has to perm their hair so it remains a certain style, then the style is going to more damaging than “hip”.

      Kiu and the hair stylist need to see this. The disrespect in the video towards black hairstyles is not it. It's bad enough they're profiting off of it, at least respect and show the history behind it - if they've been in the business that long, it's literally the least they could do. Especially cornrows and locks because now they're getting into heavy religious and culturally historical grounds

    • @byyrd2194
      @byyrd2194 2 роки тому +43

      I get what ur saying, but I really don't think they mean any harm by this. We can't police everyone who wants to try something from "black" culture. Then we are just sucking the joy out of life. And dreadlocks is not only part of African culture it actually goes back to India, culturally made famous by Rastafarians and the reggae culture, mimicking African warriors.
      I am black btw and I am just tired of the thinking everything other races do, is to harm us. We need to go back to the drawing board and figure things out instead of just saying no you can do this.

    • @janemoon6524
      @janemoon6524 2 роки тому +6

      @@byyrd2194 Even if they don't mean harm, it still has the same effect of cultural appropriation. Black people still get discriminated for having braids/dreads in schools, workplaces, etc for it being "unprofessional" or something. And to have other people wear these types of hairstyles for just fashion or just to be cool and have it be accepted without a second thought is plain disrespectful. This is where racism and colorism come into play. And even just beyond this video, Korea appropriates black culture just for fashion without even knowing the history/hardships behind natural hair and black culture. It can easily turn into blind obsession rather than appreciation. Of course, it's okay if you find it cool, but there are still many black people out there that get offended by this and it is totally warranted. If we could live in a perfect world without racism and colorism, we could share our cultures with each other without any problems, but sadly we are not there yet. People will use other cultures for the sake of being hip and fashionable without actually accepting the people from that culture, that is why this is a problem.

    Just want to note the "reggae hair" is simply a name in Korean as it has been for a while, maybe it should change but that's just the "Korean language version" but not our literal meaning of Reggae as in the usual meaning the word holds.
    As it was the first kind of black culture for them to see, they ended up calling it that and it's stuck all this time. Maybe it'll change if they realise people feel uncomfortable with it. That's usually how it is. It takes time

    I literally screamed when I heard "reggae hairstyle." This is literally just weird to me. Why would anyone create a "trend" out of a group of people's natural state? Why can't we just enjoy music and leave it at that? I feel like they see all black people as just walking "hip hop." It's also so ironic how desired black music and style is to these people but in the same breath, they literally prohibit the very people they are trying to emulate from their entertainment sectors. It's crazy how they "love" the "culture" and people so much and I've yet to EVER hear any of them speak about this ongoing issue.

      보통 한국 사람들은 헤어스타일의 문화적 의미를 잘 모르지만, 헤어스타일로 이득을 보는 사람들은 분명히 그것에 대해 더 많이 알아야 합니다. 그렇게 생각하지 않나요? 또한, 저의 이슈는 헤어스타일 자체가 아니라 흑인을 바라보는 고정관념입니다. 왜 "힙"이라는 단어가 흑인을 묘사하는 데 사용되는 유일한 단어일까요? 또한 우리의 문화가 그렇게 존경 받는다면, 왜 그 문화의 사람들은 똑같이 존경받지 못할까요? 왜 흑인들은 말 그대로 우리 음악을 틀어주는 클럽에서 쫓겨나는 걸까요? 왜 흑인 문화로부터 이익을 얻는 이 사람들은 이러한 문제들에 대해 말하지 않는 것일까요? 제가 화가 났다고 생각하시거나 이 말을 험하게 전하지 않았으면 좋겠어요. 당신이 말했듯이, 우리는 서로의 문화를 이해하기 위해 서로 배워야 합니다. 그래서 이것이 매우 필요한 대화에 대한 나의 의견입니다. 나 또한 나의 감정과 생각이 번역을 잃어버리지 않기를 바랍니다.

      Asia in general isn't exposed to western culture as much as the rest of the world, mainly because there weren't many people immigrating to Asia for there to be any big movements against racism etc. The newer generations are more aware of these issues, however, with noone to teach them the correct terminology, they fall into the terminology and stereotypes that already exist there. It isn't meant to be offensive in most cases, just a lack of understanding that there is a need for new words to describe things that, from an outside view, look generally similar. I think that it is important to understand that they are just showing appreciation for the art form of the hairstyle and music genres they take inspiration from. Rather than being so quick to label something cultural appropriation (a term which is thrown around so often, without understanding of its true meaning), try and teach them this information they don't have readily available, fill in the gaps in their information, because, they haven't got this exposure to this history unlike the western world. When a child gets something wrong they aren't criticised, isolated and blasted for not knowing the right answer, instead they are taught what is correct in depth so they don't make the same mistakes, this is what korea needs, not general statements that they are wrong but teaching. I definitely think that this history should be taught in the Korean educational system which would allow for these stereotypes and terms being used as a result of being misinformed. A controversial issue that I'd like to point out is why should be rules and regulations around expression and creativity? When a black person straightens their hair, nothing is thought of it, it is the norm as it should be, as it is already widely accepted and allowed to be accepted that. Wouldn't it be a lot more respectful towards your history and culture and a lot more appreciative of your culture if your traditions were treated the same way? Obviously am understanding of the cultural relevance and importance is needed for this to be achieved. The best way for me to explain this is to compare it to food. When people emigrate from their country to a new one they bring their culture, which is why food fusion is so prevalent. Italian people took aspects from their own culture and merged it with new ideas and local traditions in America and now it has become something amazing, for instance NY pizza, its the same for other cultures too, Asian, Middle Eastern and eauropean food were fused with other cultures, altered so it is more widely accessible and as a result, there is such a great food scene because of this. It has lead to a masterpiece of creation, fusion, a world of happiness and importance in everyones lives. Because they shared their culture rather than making it exclusive to themselves something so much more inclusive and amazing was created. I understand that social culture differs from food but the idea that it creates more instances where people can enjoy other peoples culture, life, history and world still stands. I am aware that it may come across offensive that I have compared your culture( which seaded from a stand against oppression, a reclamation of identity and happiness which was stripped away from your ancestors) with food (which is also rooted in the social, economical, cultural and environmental impacts of their climate and situation of the time, but to a less extreme extent, for instance staples and famous dishes from countries were once considered food for peasants, only eaten because they had to to survive or face death rather than out of enjoyment, which has since become so well appreciated and loved that it is no longer thought as so) and I do not mean any offence in any way. I just feel that there is no way to move forward if this continues. I agree that your history needs to be more widely known, yet I disagree with your statement that people outside of your community shouldn't be allowed to explore it and stop at just music, because this creates prejudice. Coming back to the food analogy, despite the fact that food has become so fused together, changed and mashed into something so new, there is still an incredibly high demand for authenticity and tradition, despite the fact that it has become apart of something else's identity, its own soul and place hasn't been lost. I see the same things happening to social cultures with other countries, it has become the norm, accepted, merged with other beliefs, yet it hasn't faded into non existence. Why is it that you prevent others from exploring your culture? Labelling them as just jumping onto a trend, when in actuality it's an attempt to break through the wall that creates these borders between people, that stops people from being accepted, that actually worsens racial injustice in society. And then you so readily explore others' culture, love and adopt it? Just because they aren't fully in the loop of the situation doesn't mean that they aren't trying to bring about change, for you to say this change is just a trend and think that it'd be better for them to leave it be(which would actually prevent the understanding of your ancestors' history) is insensitive to them. Why do you believe that they aren't trying to close the gap between ethnicities? It is actually discouraging in situations like these were they try to make a change for the better and then just receive discouragement. When other cultures are so vivid and distinct no matter how much it is shared, why do you believe that your culture would suddenly be buried? Then again I also see why you may see it as a trend. I sometimes feel like the popularisation of Asian culture has lead to people thinking of its history, food and culture as exotic and fun because its suddenly blown up rather than having an actual appreciate for the culture; BUT , when I actually take a step back and look at it again, I disagree with myself, I see it as them just being happy to explore a new culture, even if it is just the tip of the icebirg, its a good change. I believe that what Korean people are trying to do is the same as this, they may be getting it wrong, but it is our duty to them share this information for them to not stray into the grey areas. In conclusion, I don't believe that these issues aren't being addressed, it's just that they are taking a different aooroto close this gap, it may be slower because they don't have the understandings the western world does, if that's the case, share them, then allow them to fully absorb and immerse themselves in it like we do every day, bring surrounded by such diversity. Instead of gatekeeping things because you don't see the importance of this change, teach what isn't being spread. Negativity isn't the answer to a bright future. P. S. Some things in my comment may seem unclear or muddled up, I accidentally deleted my progress on writing this comment and so my brain was to full with things to get out in a way that is fully understandable. If you disagree with me or see faults in what I've said, please respond, I actively try to reevaluate myself incase I've missed something or misinterpreted my feeling.

      @@ny3_05_ I agree that they are uneducated however, you easily become part of the problem if you don’t actively make an effort to educate yourself.

    I like Kiu, he's always very respectful of everyone and their hair, and I could tell he was genuinely curious and wanted to learn.
    But that other guy, 'hippie buddha', or whatever was really giving off strong "i'm not racist because I have a black friend" energy.
    I still love Kiu, but this is a no for me.

    최근 영상들 보다 6년만에 머리했어요.
    나이가 있다보니 화려한걸 하고싶어도 걱정이되서 많이 고민했어요. 더군다나 탈색은 첨! 그래서 전 자연머리에 발리아쥬+머니피스로 탈색 후 전체 애쉬바이올렛 염색을 원했습니다. 제가 캡체한 사진이나 유트브 영상들을 보면서 3분 상담 진행했지만 그건 옴브레라며 전체 탈색을 해야만 한다며 결국 하이라이트를 했어요. 하이라이트가 좀 별로였어요. 다행히 염색으로 덮으니 크게 눈에 띄지 않아서 그럭저럭 만족은 합니다. 정말 해당기법이 전체탈색 후 옴브레로만 진행할 수 있나요? 이부분에 관해 영상이 있으면 좋겠어요 ㅜㅜ

    몰라서 생긴 문제 같은데, 일단 용어에 대한 개념을 우리가 다르게 해석하고 있던 듯. 매니아들의 영역이라 사실 대부분의 사람들은 저런 게 있구나 하는 게 전부지 깊이 관심이 있는 건 아니라서. 그만큼 얕게 알고 어설프게 알고 있던 거지. 이런 소통 창구를 통해 더 널리 알려지고 우리도 받아들이는 방식을 바꿔야 할 듯. 좋은 의도고 좋아하는 문화라도 단지 하나의 스타일로만 소비하기엔 존중해줘야 할 무게를 등한시 하면 안되니까.
