- They are credited as "Terje Rypdal Trio", but the song "Chaser" from the album "Chaser" (1985) was released with the group "Terje Rypdal and The Chasers".
The performance is from a live broadcasted event called "Sammen for livet", a Norwegian benifit triggered by Band Aid, World Aid etc.
I vividly remember seeing these guys live on "Musikkflekken" in Sandvika around 1988. Still one of the best concerts I ever attended :)
He's a fantastic and very unique guitarist!
This is pretty spectacular for 1985. Shame he didn't get the recognition he deserved.
Can't really se the point in qualifying by referring to 1985. We were pretty close to the middle of the Satrianis, Van Halens, Malmsteens, and Vais at that time. But yeah. This is pretty damn hot. Love how he just jams those bad-ass rock riffs into a jazz/improv setting with this band (Bjørn Kjellemyr and Audun Kleive are pretty damn amazing players as well). I'm lucky enough to have seen them live I think three times (still smiling at the memory of the guy with the beret and a glass of red at one of their shows), and Terje Rypdal another couple of times with others, more or less a complete collection of his records too. Anyone who likes jazz brains and metal brawn together ought to check out his collabs with Ronnie Le Tekrø.
Oh. And he's been active since the mid 60's, and still at it. Conspiracy released last year. One of the few who manage to successfully reinvent themselves to the point where they could almost make a complete record collection on their own...
I've always had the impression he's pretty well known in Europe, and especially in his home country Norway. I know he's got several pieces that have been played by orchestras there, and he's performed on TV several times (there's a great clip on UA-cam of him performing with a brass band on a Norwegian talk show in 1989), so I would suspect over there, he's probably as well known as Jeff Beck or Steve Vai.

Jeg holder Rypdal for å være mer interessant enn de fleste nevnte også. Skal jeg være helt ærlig om min egen smak, så holder jeg heller ikke '80-tallet noe høyere enn andre perioder heller.

reminds me of my country's genius guitarist Amir zaki,who recently passed away with a heart attack and had no money for the treatment before his death!!

W O W! Was sent to here via a link posted on the Deep Purple fan site, The Highway Star. The thread discussed great guitarists who are not given their due such as Ritchie Blackmore. I’d heard Terje in more sedate jazz albums and had no idea he could play like this. This was just fantastic. As engaging as Jeff Beck and Blackmore. Can’t give higher praise than that.

Such an influence on yours truly. I've been a fan since the early 80s, and have everything he's done, often on both vinyl and CD. I generally prefer his more introspective work, but this is great too. ECM is a gift from God. And blessed be the listeners! Truly!

"Chaser" is from the album of the same name. Then they were called T R Trio. Changed name to T R & The Chasers in -86 when Atle Bakken joined in.

That would have been Lasse Welander. Janne Schaffer did extensive studio work with them, but didn't do much tour work for them. Terje never worked with them, though. He was on his very own trajectory, incomperable to the other two. When you're signed to ECM, you don't have to take on ABBA gigs, I suppose...

How well is Terje Rypdal known in The U.S. I use to buy 30% of my records by genre and album design. And was successful 8 out of 10 times.The only reason I no of Terje Rypdal, is because of the design on the Blue album cover. Seriously.

This was one of my favorite practice records for drums back in the period of early 1986..I really loved that drummer Audun Klieve...I also ran into drummer Terry Bozzio about the same time that I had been really into this "Chaser" LP and I asked him at a local Hollywood,CA health-food-market if he had ever heard of guitarist: Terje Rypdal and he said : "No" that he hadn't...a few years later I heard in some magazine that he had actually had gone to Norway and had hung-out with Terje and that the two of them were shopping for clothes together...Terry at the very same time told me that he was very frustrated working with Jeff Beck as he had spent tons of time writing-out pieces to play for Jeff and that Beck would come into the practice-session uninterested and totally into what he was doing only which was very hard on Terry...Sucks as I think that both Terry Bozzio and Terje would work like magic together...
Then you could get an incredible producer like : Manfred Eicher or Bill Laswell and then a great lp could be made! I only saw Bozzio play live once and I can't remember when it was..I think that it was with Jeff Beck and the Stevie Ray Vaughan show at the L.A. Sports Arena back in '86 and he was very good..Yet it would be even more incredible to me to hear him playing with Terje...This piece is incredible..This LP : "Chaser" and Camberwell Now's "The Ghost Trade" were two of my faves and my favorite practice lp's back in the early part of 1986 when I was living in a converted-garage in Norwalk,CA and had deaf-neighbors who would trash my drive-way with Modello-bottles and cans at the time..funny..yet sad as hell..Drunken / Deaf Mexicans who couldn't hear the music..yet who didn't happen to like me or my looks!
I have a cd with Rypdal Bozzio & Bailey, from 94. Its out there
