- Keith and I went around town today and did a bunch of quotes and estimates for his business. It was a blast getting to hang with the man himself and learn some really practical tips and advice for doing quotes and how he bid his work.
Keith and I met up on a Saturday morning, talked a bunch while running a few errands, and then went and did a walk around on a job he just completed. He had to backtrack to put some Preen down on the property, and while we were there, he did a break down of the job and how he charged for it.
This was just a fun video to help you guys with a few pointers on job bidding, estimates, and how to use technology to make things more simple for you. Hopefully the tips you get from Keith and I helped your business!

Would you guys like to see more quoting videos? How about with different folks and different types of jobs?
Sounds good to me!
Yes Brother
Yes. Please!
Brian and Keith please... please keep them coming... I'm in Lansing Michigan wishing I could hang out with you guys ! Kick ass 👍🏻
Sure definitely!
Brian!
It was awesome hanging out with you and your tribe.
This is a great community.
You bet pal thanks for having me and hosting me on your side of town!
Keith... I need help man... I don’t need to know exactly how you do it or exactly what you charge but just want to get an idea of how you charge for laying rock. Do you charge by the square foot? If so what is roughly your range for that? I charge my mulch jobs by the cubic yard but rock is a lot harder and more labor intensive to spread so I was just curious on how to charge for it
Isn’t Brian awesome?!
Brian & Keith I’m from Ohio I’m trying to get started I need advice on Pricing lawn mowing jobs ?
Keith or Brian... how much would you charge for laying landscape pavestone around a mulch bed. 1 high x 220 stones at $2 each? Thanks
You guys are fucking great men I wish I could spend a time with you just quoting and learning keath and Brian great advice
wow.. i just done 300 foot of raised flower beds 3 foot wide, with weed barrier staked and black resin edge. Inside a wood privacy fence with a gate too small to get equipment in. i had to transfer shovel and wheelbarrow 10 cubic yards of mulch for the beds and 6 tons of top soil to level the yard (with a garden rake). planted 200 flower bulbs.. removed (with a wheelbarrow and transfer shovel) 2 full size pickup truck beds of decorative stone..surrounded the beds around a patio with 100 brick edge pavers. and trimmed limbs off a tree.. all for $1,600+ cost of materials. took me 4 days with myself and 1 other person. I felt sooo ripped off once it was done and cleaned up.. i am still butt hurt about it.
I am so impressed with Keith's progression the last few years, he has really got his presentation and ability to prequalify potential customers down to a science. This is great content for us smaller guys.
Thanks so much man.
@@keith-kalfas Seriously, thanks for the info, bro. You really know your stuff and it shows. I sincerely appreciate you revealing your pricing and such. This removes a lot of guess work for us new guys. Would definitely like to see more videos like these from you guys.
I have done TERRIBLE deals man, 450 dollar for a 3500 dollar job. 300 for a 2500... boy I do not mess around anymore.
Can you tell me how it all went down? I'm very curious as a new business owner it would be helpful
Brian, I am a 75 year old refugee from the frozen north living in Florida. It was simple really, we just put our snowblower on the roof of the truck and drove south until someone asked us what it was! We’ve been here ever since. Seriously, I truly enjoy your videos. You are proof that someone with a little guts and imagination (my grandmother used to call it “gumption”), can make a success of themselves in this country. God bless you and your beautiful wife. I would also wish you good luck, but you do a pretty good job of making your own luck.
Thanks pal that means a lot!
When does Keith breath, lol. He is always on go.
Haha
Nice to see someone who shows that you miss things on an estimate .... Also nice to hear that you won't walk away from a job without your absolute satisfaction... Also about Preen I continually try to learn. so as I have learned I share with my clients and it helps ... you have very good comments about charging and grow ...the actual separation of making money and growth .. there is such a fine line for the small business guy in this business and going to next level.... Equipment is the separater . And in my area ... Young workers are not in school enough to learn how to work a full 8 hour day. Thank you for your time to educate us .. WE ALL can LEARN from others
Totally agree. It’s all about growing the company no matter how small or big it is.
The most thorough and helpful landscape bidding video I’ve ever seen! Please make more of these on all facets of the business, PLEASE! Thank you so much for uploading!!
We're making another one soon.
Love both you guys. Love the collaboration.great video , Keith shined with all his tips and knowledge.
Also another big thing is you need to be a like-able person with a personality that people like .... If they like you as a person you have a much better chance of getting the job
Great video...........................you have to know when to "fold or when to keep on playing". I thank God I had 30+ years in the wholesale hardware industry with 20+ in outside sales to LEARN how to "read people" before I started our business. I can't "read them" 100% of the time but 95% of the time I can "read them"! Ain't nuttin' like 'sperance!!!!
I did landscaping and maintenance for 10 years and now 3 years on my own
I come here for reminders and to find out new stuff that I can use to my advantage in my business
Grow thanks alot
Thank you so much! I really appreciate this video! I’m a Barbar transitioning to landscape and lawn care. So happy for this video!
I been charging so low I know how to do my landscaping! But I'm learning little by little how to quote thank you and Keith ! Y'all teaching my so much love watching y'all video in my 4 month of landscaping and it's going good have many more years to learn and progress
Thanks Keith for all your wisdom and time you given us all. Been watching your videos for few years now and keep learning things every day just wanted to say thank you from us in Illinois
Thanks so much Tod.
Charging a high price is easy..... getting the customer to stop laughing and say yes is not so easy. lol
I was thinking why he's over there telling jokes to the owner I've already showed up and got the job done
I now Simple I regret all that time
Keith gave some good sound business advice, not just for the lawncare industry. Notice his eye for detail in his work, I have said it before anybody can cut a lawn or throw some mulch down, what counts is servicing your customer the right way.
Austin Denney Totally!
The real money is in installs and you have less competition. Like you said anyone can cut grass but not everyone can design a yard and install it. Learn how to install water features, pondless, and koi ponds and you'll be steps ahead of 80% of Landscapers.
This video isn't just a snack, it's a nutrient rich meal. Love this quoting/bidding video! You can count on Keith to give it to you impassioned, authentic, and informative...been a fan of his for a minute. Even basic lawn and mulch bidding, I'd enjoy another video similar.
Thanks so much brother
40 years ago I started a Landscape Maintenance & Snow plowing company the big difference was I had served a 4 year Apprenticeship in Horticulture and had my own Road crew working for the local Municipality prior to going out on my own. Really knowing what you are doing really helps getting contracts for Condominium complexes and businesses, keeping monthly cheques coming in year round really helps to keep your head above water.
By the way trimming shrubs like they were hedges isn't the best for flowering shrubs or ornamental trees.
Good job making success out of Landscaping.
Dang man... I’m a blown away Keith knows his stuff, respect💯😳
Thanks bro.
@@keith-kalfasyou are that dude you know that right. Smart cat
Thank you guys so much this is very helpful for people only doing this type of work for a year or two now like myself!!
This was a great video! Amazing content and useful for sure! You guys worked well together, and the on site no scripted video most impressive. thank you
Awesome advice! I lost my Lawn Care business with these issues as major key reasons.
Great Video! Thank you.
I loved this video. I’ve been watching Keith for a couple of years. Started because I was looking into window cleaning. I also liked the video you did with Stanley and the stand on mower challenge. This was very helpful with quotes. Keith is so awesome, wish I was able to hangout with you him and Stanley, Brandon is an up and coming force as well. Thanks for another awesome video Brian.
Thanks so much.
Great job men. It was cool to see one of Keith’s finished products. Very clean and a terrific model for the owners to show off and hopefully bring in a few referrals.
I am 4 years in I learned last year to charge more I was just making it now I'm finally getting bigger better equipment including a bigger truck .
I love lawn care maintaining and landscaping.
Pricing is so hard to learn .
Thanks for the advice it really open my eyes up
Appreciate the tips. I really love working with plants, hedges and mowing lawns. Started a new lawn care business recently, have been picking up clients fast and thinking about expanding into some landscaping.
All your tips are gunna save me a lot of headaches!!
YO DUDE IS A MASTERMIND, only masterminds recognize master minds... only he will get that lol
Just used this technique for bidding and it worked. Had a cleanup call and I have done this yard before. Hasn’t been touched all winter. Really didn’t want it and threw a high a price out there to make it worth my while and she bit. All before I went over there. It’s nice. Thanks for this video
Nice
Sir Keith change my life...I like the way he thinks...I leave and work in Az.... landscape work here is very hard and a lot of competition the prices here are very low.... Keith with he's videos teach me how to stand firm on my price....and he motivated me a lot...
Yo! Keith was an inspiration for me. 3 years ago, I sold all my equipment and got out of the business. I was too stressed out. I was definitely doing it wrong. I was however, making a ton of money, that being said, money is not happiness.
In my final year I implemented a pre pay service for my lawn care clients just like how Comcast is they bill for a month in advance I did that with my lawn care clients. I contacted every client & explained it to them. Of course I lost quite a few clients, but I retained everyone that I wanted &that wanted me. I used quick books (billing stressed me OUT.) so if it ever happened that during a 4 cut lawn service month, we only cut your lawn 3times, the amount you paid would carry over.
That being said (sorry so lengthy, I have a LOT of emotion still tied up in this) , locally I tried to get other landscaping companies to get on board with a new way of bidding jobs. This is what I proposed: I can estimate your job for free over the phone, if however you have me drive to your house/ business, and I use my skillset to come up with & put together an actual job quote for you, that's not an estimate, that's a "diagnostic" . I was trying to implement a diagnostic fee.
It never caught on. Bigger companies especially didn't care at all. It's been 3 years since I've been out of business and I honestly really miss it. I've been considering starting back up. Getting with someone to put together a business plan so I can avoid pitfalls such as, only attracting employees that don't want to be paid on the books etc.
Anyways... I thoroughly enjoyed this! Thank you!
Thanks for the kind words and support too sir
WE APPRECIATE YOU KEITH AND ALL YOUR SHARED KNOWLEDGE👍
Brian and Keith, Enjoyed this video! I am a firm believer that we can always learn something from one another! Appreciate it! Continued success to you both!
Thanks Shawn!
Just watched this 4 year old video for like the 10th time. It’s great.
Thanks Keith
Thanks Brian
Good video, one pitfall you forgot to mention was don't by preen from Home Depot. Sureguard or other preemergents work better and cost per acre is significantly lower than that of Preen. I love these two guys good work.
Best video out yet! Great content! Educate the community so everyone can benefit in the end! Please make more! Great great content.
Definitely!
I love Keith and Brian yall legit started from the bottom. Much RESPECT.
Now were here! #themiddle 😂
Thanks Keith and Brian, you guys are awesome . Very informative.
Awesome video, It's cool to see Keith from a different perspective. Good stuff.
Starting my own lawn buisness this week. Got a good deal on a kubota package. 0 down 187 a month and it comes with a 54" zero, a 21"push, a blower, trimmer and edger.....love the advice. Just trying to get ideas on how to get customers. Thanks guys. Liked and subscribed
Hey Brian Keith work is amazing and yours I do lawncare and landscape projects this video helped a lot. What we do is art
thanks.enjoyed this video. been watching keith for years. Found this one and as usual....picked up more info and inspiration to continue. More videos like this!! quoting and "after install" videos with quote info, what worked, what didn't, etc are my favorite types. Learn a lot from them. My mulch prices are going up! I cant buy bulk mulch anywhere close to my area, so im stuck with bagged mulch here, and my profit margin isn't nearly as good.
Thanks man. We're doing another video like this soon.
You guys are so amazing. I seriously thought that I was the only one who cares for the customer 😂
I actually watched this video a year ago but I didn't realize how good this was until I watched it the 2nd time
Thanks a lot guy's and shows ur not greedy and want to help people out.
Best landscaping/lawn care video I've watched on UA-cam. Thank you and you both just gained a sub.
👊
I wish everybody would take that much pride in their job...that's awesome I love it !!!
BOOM!
starting a landscaping business and i literally have no idea what I'm doing- these videos calm my anxiety! thanks!
@ 4:30....Keith is talking about meticulous finish work....and back behind him the mulch reveal on the house was a roller coaster. Pet peeve...lol it’s the little things. Get the guys on those rakes.
Hello Keith, my name is Mark and I live in Albany NY and I will be starting my own landscape design company in the spring. I wanted to let you know that I enjoy watching your videos because they are not lame or boring, they are differently informational. Thank you for making the videos. Have a great week.
What's up Mark!
Hi, I appreciate your information. Your videos are really helping me understand how to start my own landscaping business here in Seattle area.
Those shrubs that you mentioned you were unsure about - I THINK they are Diablo ninebark. It was really hard to see but the leaf shape caught my eye and I think that’s what it is.
Anyway, the garden looks awesome. Good luck to you and your business.
Take care,
Michelle
Favorite two youtubers in one video! Always great info, and advice!
Haha thanks man.
Man, I wish I had some help like this when I started, but now is getting better, I really like your videos guys, and definitely has given me good ideas
(26:45) Holy $*** I felt that one. That example given by Keith on its own, really made me realize how much my time is valuable to myself and why I am wanting to do what I want to do.
You got this!
Just found this one real good content. You guys are great together. Thanks for all the info.
Starting to think about my landscaping business and u guys inspire me. Thank u guys so much !!!!
Thanks so much.
Great info guys. I love quoting and estimating videos.
had no idea yall run together ... THANKS FOR THE INFO!!! yalll are killing it congrats!!!
I'm local but own a different business. Been subscribed to Keith's channel for years.. Great info no matter what line of work you are in..
Wow. That guy is awesome. Very knowledgeable! Thanks!
Thanks Frank.
Great VLOG Brian! Yep, more quoting vids would be good..different folks etc..
loved the video!! in the process of growing my business as well! this vid made me realize several things thank you so much!!
Great point about actually getting the plant to the site.
You guys are awesome. Its been a pleasure watching your progress over the years 👍
Thanks pal
Thinking about starting a landscaping company. First time seeing your channel. I already learned several things, great.
Epic video Brian! Great to see you both collaborate together! Looking forward to more coming!
Love the tag on the tree shrub lol. Reminds me of buying clothes and you forget the tag lol
Another good point... on install jobs if my price comes in just over say $4085 of $8100 I will take a little hit to get the price under the last price tier... The $4085 I would bring back to $3925 $8100 would end up $7950 ... The initial sticker shock is better to the customer... I thought of it when Kevin mentioned $3990 on this job.
Great selling tip. Totally agree. $199 is better sounding than $200!
Very helpful video. Great shirt by the way!! 😂
Tree anchoring systems are a great alternative to stakes. The customer is always amazed by the visual aspect because the system is below the ground.
Wow Amazing!! I dig hearing this kind of information. I feel like the peanut farmer LOL! Even though I am my own Boss and my wife is my CFO, I am finding out I need to bid jobs by itemizing my work instead of giving the customer a hourly rate. I charge $50.00 an hour for labor, $75.00 an hour for tractor work and $75.00 an our for pruning (Correct pruning like what Keith was talking about with the trees in front of the house) give the tree shape and let it breath, Not! turn it into a snowball. I need to work out a better quoting system. Example I bid this large job which includes: mowing 50.000 sq ft, blowing, stick edging (high and tight look!) trim shrubs, prune trees and fertilizing for $1800.00 a month, outside of special projects which would be bid separately. In my head I budgeted 9 hours a week of labor at $50.00 and hour, I just limited my earning potential Dam! if I would have itemized the work (and this is a 5th nicest custom home park in Oregon called Gainsborough) I could be making more than 1800 a month, Now I feel like a slave to the entire place for the 9 hours I bid. Live and learn.
Brian I really appreciate your video's! Sorry for the lengthy comment, I guess the video got me excited tand blew my 🤯 a change is coming for 2021.
Here's my latest video about how to repair landscape edging...🤣 ua-cam.com/video/-J9yndSn9RE/v-deo.html
It’s cool, I appreciate the knowledge. Thanks to the both of you..💯
Smarter not harder! keep up the great work guys👍
Keith is a good dude. Been watching his videos forever. Just subscribed to you Brian. Enjoyed this video a ton. I appreciate how you are openly “learning” while making this video. Good info, great video and I appreciate it man.
Thanks pal. Always a life learner.
Brian's Lawn Maintenance Always learning...thanks again for the video and thanks for the reply
Very good video just like all the rest.
Golden Nuggets are things that you look for, the nuggets can be real gold if that is what you are looking for, or it can be learning bites of info. These learning bites of info are there ready to be absorbed, for those that are ready to receive them. A few times Keith mentions in the video that he has learned the hard way and that he should have been doing this earlier. Point here is that some people just never learn to be better or even have a clue on what it takes to really have a profitable business that grows and grow every year. No one said it is easy to do, but to know some of those elements is key, and when you are exposed to it and it make sense to you and your business you immediately apply it and hope that it works in your favor. No one wants to look back 2 year, 5 years or 20 years and feel that all their efforts in running a business yielded them nothing but stress and no money. Keith and his team have learned the "AH HA" factor. Hats off to you guys and thank you for sharing a good golden business nuggets for us!
Thank you
Great Vid!! One of the best I’ve seen in a while!
New subscriber here, only because now I know your friends with Keith lol 👍 1st year Property Services company owner in the Milwaukee area thanks for all your time spent on your videos both of you!
You bet pal thanks for the sub!
Haha what's up man.
You guys both are awesome great tips and advice!
Here's a tip for the hedges, Use a leaf blower, Then you dont have to pick stuff out by hand.
I feel the being "held back". Growing up Ive always lived in apartments with nowhere to put any equipment. Always paying for storage.... Can not wait for a house.
Only in Michigan- landscapers wearing black.. in Oklahoma we don't wear shirts. Keith dudes gotta lot of pain . I feel for Keith.. he seems highly intelligent.. he could sell anything.. you're doing a good job Keith.
this has given me so much info. Thank you gentleman
Keith straight up changed my outlook on life & landscaping
Thanks Robert
Man his work is really clean!! Great video B.
Thanks! Yeah his job was on point.
Thanks Keith!!! ;-)
You guys are a great help!!!
My first year in and im working mainly on quotes, most of my quotes seem to low but in going off of local companies that do the same work. I just add a little more til it feels about right lol. I have a long ways to go.
Thank you for your videos, you guys inspired me to make my channel!
Love this! Great job guys.👍
Congratulations on 25K Brian, huge milestone. This was a fantastic video with much to learn. Will sure bring a lot of helpful tips to people.
Thank you!
You're very welcome!
You're welcome!
Great info... I use Google Earth Zillow sometimes even Facebook to get information I may be looking for on Mowing estimates, Snowplowing estimates and other stuff. I use tech all the time to help me out. Cloud billing 99.5% of billing is paperless in every way, quotes, payments, invoices all email and credit card.. I don't turn down paper route but I find business with someone is 3 or 4 times more efficient if they are up to at least email and card standards. The time I have spent estimating, chasing checks over the years has turned me into a machine. Business should be as simple as you give a fair price, do a fair job, and customer pays in a fair amount of time. I find some older folks think your pricing is outrageous because they are use to paying 1980 rates. Alway remember TIME IS MONEY I make almost double net and have at least 30% more time than my first 10 years in business. These are priceless skills to have people pay attention.
Very well said.
he,he,he 15 years to find out a tree has been planted too close to the house..
Here in Auckland New Zealand things grow so fast that it would actually only take 4/5 years max.
Even though I now a lot about plants I know very little about making estimates
Your videos are very helpful and enjoyable in that regard,as I am finally sick and tired of being a underappreciated slave and plan to start for myself in the second quarter of next year.
Amazing video..I'm down in Toledo,Ohio much love and respect
I love your community and I'm so glad to be a part... One of your best videos right here
Thanks Dan!
@@BriansLawnMaintenance just calling a spade a spade. Didn't take much brainpower to figure out that you're the bomb diggity!!! I run first-in-class landscape in New York 20 minutes outside of Manhattan. If you ever come to this neck of the woods I would love to have you
Hey, really enjoyed video. very informative. Keith mentioned stump grinding trees 12-14 inches. Can you plant a replacement tree in an area previously stump grinded or is that just for putting down landscape turf
I like it! Outside the box ideas with sound business principles!
very solid video, great work guys!
Thanks Keith. This video was AWESOME
