After reading your comment I listened to this again and heard "a thief of love." I know you said "Never mind! Got it!" and said it 2 years ago, but I'm pretty sure it's not "low-count," but rather "no 'count" as in, "Paw, some no-account good-for-nothin' done stole our chickens!" Note that Lowell was big on wordplay and loved to slip in alternate lyrics
What do they say after, " That desperate low count desperado"? I hear "Thief of love/My business is the street?" or do I hear "Thief of love, put's my business in the street?" Any help?

no-count gambler could also mean to be a gambler who doesn't count cards
