Great video. I’m expecting soon and keen to make use of SPL as my maternity leave from work isn’t that great. Thanks for the insight!

Hi, very helpful video thanks for this. Any updates since then? I am working in a factory for more than 2 years and my partner(mother) is self employed for 3 years. We notice as a self employed is not really worthed to have maternity leave so I would like to take the whole paternity leave? Could I take that 52 weeks just myself? So she will not get paid for anything...is still classed as a shared parental leave?

Hi - yes, she will have to take 2 weeks by law after giving birth, but you can then take the remaining 50 weeks. The shared parental leave policy can be divided however you want, including you taking it all! Good luck!

I am due to be a father again. What we can get our head around is how my leave will affect my partners maternity pay from her employer. She only gets 3 months useful occupational pay before this tapers to almost nothing. If I took 6 weeks off at the start would this then reduce her occupational pay by 6 weeks?

Congrats. This was the case for me and my employers terms, but it might be more general. I would check with her employer. So if my wife wanted to take more of her occupational pay at the start, it would have reduced the number of full occupational pay I could receive. It would have been nice if it was additional!

@mohammed bentaleb Thank you. I'm a civil servant which offers a very generous 6 months full pay ShPP. My partner is a higher earner by some margin but only receives one month at full pay. We can't really afford to do without her salary whilst she is close to the maximum. So we may have to wait a few months before I take mine if this is the case but it seems crazy to me that I would have to do that. It just seems so counterintuitive to what SPL was trying to achieve.

@@leefoster8015 i'm a civil servant as well so maybe my case is directly applicable. I also found it annoying that this is the case, so I ended up taking my occ pay and my wife took unpaid leave. Otherwise her occ pay would have eaten into mine and it was lower. I think the policy is there to stop all men taking their occ leave / pay as default, which would be a no brainer if it was additional to their partners. I do think they should change it so that it is additional for at least for the first 39 weeks - that would be a good compromise.

Hi - i am a civil servant. So any Government department and some government agencies as well. Yes, i am very lucky to hav ea good parental leave policy. My wife's was pretty poor, so it made sense for me to use mine!
